Now, I appreciate their greatness and I realize how far ahead of their time they were. Great musicians and unbelievable song writers. Nothing else (at that time) sounded like this. I tend to get a lot of comments from men when I wear my R40 (40th anniversary tour) t-shirt. Like, 'Woman don't like Rush!' or 'Did you borrow your boyfriends t-shirt?' I won't ever where a Concert Tour t-shirt if I didn't see it. Being a Poet, I love Neil's lyrics and the presentation and musicality are on point!

Just so you know. The drummer, who happens to be legendary, also wrote most of the lyrics to most of their music, if not all. Dependent on the era of the bands formation. Neal created some of the most technically complex drum parts of any band on the face of the planet. As a drummer, and speaking for others of my ilk, he is the gold standard for becoming technically proficient in your playing. I have studied his methods for over thirty years and still cant play everything he did. I have a suspicion he had a hidden arm only he could see haha.

Fun fact: this was pre-technology,so to get the echo of the waves and voice, they actually rowed a boat out onto a lake and recorded it. That's mostly natural echo, with a slight bit of studio enhancement.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned in the comments: for Tidepools to get the "natural" atmospheric effect, Alex and Neil pushed oars through the water of the lake near the recording studio to get the small wave effect and they recorded the song outdoors. Source: Permanent Waves tourbook essay written by Neil.
This song was a replacement for their attempt at adapting the epic poem "Sir Gawain And The Green Knight" into a song. I'm glad they made this choice.

The reason that Neil could write such deep lyrics is that instead of partying & getting high, he read all the time from science to philosophy. He said in an interview that he was never bored on the road, for he was reading, and he found ways not to be bored.

COSMIC WAVES!

Your comment at 2:13 is the best comment I ever heard anyone say about this group. I’ve been listening to them for 40 years and I never heard anyone say how they mastered the ability to put you in the moment by creating sounds, special effects and how they played their instruments to create mood, atmosphere and imagery that goes with the lyrics to take you on a journey. They consistently did that for years but no one ever talked about it. Excellent critique!

I yelled, to no one, as goosebumps covered me from head to toe. You think these songs are amazing? Me, too. But they are an Experience, live. Nearly transcendent .
