- The Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (CSSGJ) is pleased to host the recording of two presentations on the crisis in Gaza, one by Prof. Ilan Pappé (Exeter University) and one by Dr. Victoria Araj (Lincoln University), organised by the East Midlands Regional University and College Union (UCU) and chaired by Dr. Francesco Belcastro (Derby University) on 13 December 2023.
The current crisis in Palestine has caused over 16,000 deaths in the Gaza Strip, along with over 500 in the West Bank this year, and 1,200 Israeli deaths (as of mid-December 2023). Gaza’s population are on the brink of starvation, and we are seeing the continued loss of whole families. This seminar explores the roots of the current crisis, from the colonial roots of the 1948 Nakba to the most recent bloodshed. What are the factors that led to the current crisis? What can we as academics and union members do to stop the current attack on the Palestinian population? The event calls on academics to reflect on the current crisis, but also on the role of academics as social and political actors.
Ilan Pappé is a professor at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter. His books include: The Biggest Prison on Earth: A History of the Occupied Territories (Oneworld, 2017); On Palestine (Penguin, 2015, with Noam Chomsky), and The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (Oneworld, 2007).
Victoria Araj is a Post-doctoral Researcher with the Reimagining Lincolnshire project at the University of Lincoln. She holds a PhD in Peace Studies from the University of Bradford, UK and a Masters and BA in International Development from the University of Manchester, UK.

Thank you for this presentation with Professor Ilan Pappé. I wish the world would learn the history of the Palestinians under the colonial oppression by the Israelis. Cease Fire Now!
I cry every time I hear that poem.
Highly recomendable. Essential revelation included.
Gees what a great summary
Insightful analysis
History is important but looking into the future,
Gaza should be free from Palestinians.
