- Roles have been reversed from what we've come accustomed to in the Commons.
Rishi Sunak took up his place as leader of the opposition for the first time today as Sir Lindsay Hoyle was elected Speaker of the House in the first acts of the new parliament, while Keir Starmer gave his first speech from the despatch box as Prime Minister.

That's really interesting - as a British person, I was chatting with my partner today about how we hate the fact our politicians are close friends with those from other parties - as well as with journalists. It's all very cosy, with politicians able to laugh and joke with actual fascists both in the parliament and on TV, and the media not holding any of them to account properly in order to maintain privileged access. Although there's been some drift apart in the recent polarisation of politics, much of the time MPs do form friendships and connections to MPs from opposing sides. It's not uncommon to find a group of MPs laughing together in the bar after work only to realise they're from 3 or 4 different parties.
As the speeches given in the video illustrate, It's still a job, and they are still just people. They have to learn to live and work side by side with people with often diametrically opposed political viewpoints. There are the psychos and the ideologues who get into the commons and frankly, nobody likes them very much (even MPs don't like those who won't STFU about politics). There's also the slimy ambitious ones who will trample on anyone to get power. MPs often learn to keep a wide berth from them too lest they get stepped on.
It is important to remember that a lot of MPs really are there (at least initially) because they believe in helping their communities. Because we've had so many parasites in government lately it gets easy to forget that.

I now call the Primeminister Sir Keir Starmer too!
Its not Kier Starmer too. Its Tony Blair 2.

We have to give it to the parliament in the UK and how civilised it is all
Yeah it was a real circle jerk in there. What does that tell you?
It's not always been this way .If you're not British.Every Wednesday prime minister questions are televised it can get pretty heated and almost childish.
It is seldom this courteous 😂
@@chrisholland7367 yes but for the change over of power it is very calm, nothing like America (see 6th January?
Because they’re all buddies and have the same puppet master .
man..this guys are so civilised. It will take decades for Indians to reach that standard as we are divided by caste.
Never been as impressed with Sunak's composure and leadership than I've been today 😂
Keir's face when Rishi said "we still respect each other"
That does not look like a face of respect. That looks like a face of "I know what you and your party have done and I'm fucking livid"
Who is the bird next to Diane Abbott ?
Came here for that info myself. 🤣
look's like she is Catherine Atkinson for Derby North
Fair play on Rishi for taking it humbly & cracking on - when so many said he would run off ⭐️
It's a shame that the Australian parliamentary can't act like this after an election.
Richy Nutsak is gonna keep on telling porky pies just like before
much easier now expose but he wont be leader for long and nor does he want to be
@@frozenice61 CALIFORNIA on his mind
...you going to keep Starmer to account now he is actually in power or are you just a Labour mouthpiece? Dear glorious leader 🤤
So is Starmer.
Sunak did nothing wrong
I cannot see why Rishi Sunak would want to remain a back bencher of the conservative party.
I am sure that his wife and him would prefer to be in their California home than in Yorkshire and London.
Will there be a bi-election in the future?
Given he was a sitting PM I don't think he had a choice but to stand as an MP obviously because he was the PM. A sitting PM to stand down during an election would be unheard of nor good for the party. I doubt he will last the full 5 years if I'm honest
I imagine he'll be off as soon as they elect a new leader. He can't really desert the ship before then.
He'll follow his wife's money out of the country as soon as he possibly can, i don't think anyone doubts that.
He’s a Tory xxxt. So he could well stay as an MP using all the expenses he can get away with.
Theresa May stayed as did Liz Truss. Ok Truss was PM for a very short time but still she remained an MP when she could’ve just done a Nadine Dorries and left.
Another ex PM who stayed on as a bank bencher was Gordon Brown.
After the 2010 election Brown remain PM by order of our so called constitution until a new government was sworn in, at which point he resigned as leader of Labour and returned to the back benches until the 2015 election when he stood down.
There’s 3 recent ones who’ve stayed on. I’m sure if I look hard enough there’ll be others.
Who knows what Sunak will do but my guess is he’ll stay for a term then leave, filling his pockets with all the freebies and expenses scams he can and all while pretending to ‘serve’ his constituents (who live in a rural area who’s economy is based around tourism and farming. Thick of them to still back the Brexiter MP who lied about the benefits of Brexit to a large part of his constituency.
Far be it from me for calling people thick but when you’re experiencing dificlties exporting your produce to the EU when you were told everything would be ok, to re elect the man who said that is fundementakky and by definition, stupid. Mturkeys voting for Christmas and as usual heyre being slaughtered STILL supporting christmas
Sunak cares about himself and won’t want to lose all the perks yet. He’ll rough it for now is my opinion anyway. .
He likely wont despite the promises, he may just wait to use a challenge to his leadership to swoon; "Oh, I have been ousted by my party, pray be that my constituents should have a representative my party trusts, I must fall on my sword... on the beaches of Malibu, bye."
It was truly a joy to watch this - so respectful and fair play with great speeches by both Starmer and Sunak. 👌
Wow civility and respect in politics ! Haven't seen that for a long while.
Rishi Sunak's brain: just keep saying sorry, they've got to believe you at some point!
Feels so surreal watching the tables turned like this. Like some alternate reality.
Ah naive youngsters. Yet to learn how little separates these parties.
How peaceful this proceedings are. Listening eachother and speaking when there turn comes. If we compare this to Indian parliament I can see that we have a long way to go.
Surprisingly calm and respectful from both sides
Rishi has been very dignified in defeat!
It is just a shame he couldn't be dignified before that.
A little boy with his tail between his legs.
He's jumped ship early because handle the mess
He's not being dignified, he's playing along because the world is watching and he will look bad if he doesn't play service for the jobs he will get in the future. He's a chameleon
When you're as rich as he is, it's easy to be gracious and dignified !
