    Whether or not he is the best player ever is something I could care less about. What I care about is that he was the perfect bassist for the Who - the greatest live rock band ever. He was the lead instrument in the band. Townshend actually played off of Moon, Moon off of Daltrey. John was in his own world. It's why the Who are just about the hardest band in the world to imitate, and why there are so few Who tribute bands despite their legendary stature.

    Like it or not- to those that want to discredit, or disrespect John Entwistle- NONE of the 'bass heroes' of today would have sounded anything like they do, without Rotosound stainless steel bass strings- (and other brands) which John was 'instrumental' in helping to bring into the mass market. He is criminally overlooked for this incredibly important innovation in electric bass history!
    P.S., Gordon Cotten, John's teriffic keyboardist in this video- is a friend of mine.

    • @videomaniac108
      @videomaniac108 Před 9 lety +5

      There's nothing wrong with using round-wound strings, especially if you'e looking for a brighter tone with more mid-range harmonics, as Entwistle apparently liked. One advantage with the flat-wound strings, aside from smoother and quieter slides on the strings, is that a flat-wound string of equal gauge will have a higher mass density and will require higher string tension. This can help to reduce low E fret buzz on a bass with a low-action setup. With a good EQ flexibility on your preamp you can boost the midrange and get that growl if you want. I setup my Gibson Thunderbird with d'Addario chrome flat wounds and love the tone and feel. I'm glad that bass players today have choices available, whether they like round-wound, half-round, tape-wound or flat-wound strings.

    • @bigbass421
      @bigbass421 Před 9 lety +1

      Jim, I use Chromes on a number of my basses- and stainless rounds on my 5 string basses. I'm a luthier and repairman, for almost 45 years now. First set of Rotosounds I heard was in 1969, on a 1960 stack knob jazz bass- through a Traynor YBA-3A and 8-10 cabinet. It was stunning.

    • @stevejewell9263

      Who says they aren't that good? They're perfectly good. Nothing wrong at there, That drummer is plenty good. If he hadn't been John wouldn't have had what he need to do what he's doing here. Bass Players and Drums go together. If one is weak the other suffers for it. You can bet John Picked this guy personally for what he could do on the drums. Meanwhile the Guitar player doing the vocals may not be as flashy as Pete Townsend and his voice may not be as strong as Roger Daltry but damn if he isn't pulling the duties of both Pete and Roger at the same time well enough to give pretty good versions of the Who tunes anyway. To my ear these guys John was playing with are pretty damn good. You weren't really expect The Who were you? John's a great a fantastic Bass player but he is/was just 1 piece out the 4 you need to make that band. Set that unrealistic expectation aside and this is pretty good band.

    When playing the guitar with Entwistle all you have to do is play rhythm. He will do all the leads.

    He didn't need to play with "suckers" to look badass. He already was with The Who.
    Entwistle's just one of the greatest bassist ever, no matter who's on stage with him.
