  • BAE Systems Bofors launched the Tridon Mk2 next-generation 40mm anti-aircraft system at Eurosatory 2024. It is based on the 40Mk4 naval gun system already selected by many navies to equip several classes of ships.
    =====================
    Stefan Löfström, sales and marketing director at BAE Systems Bofors, answers our questions on this new SHORAD (short range air defense) system.
    The Tridon Mk2 offers a solution to help fill that gap. It is a mobile anti-aircraft system with high-precision, teamed with critical munitions capabilities, including the Bofors 3P programmable munition which forms the backbone of the system, designed for defeating a wide range of aerial and land-based threats. The system has an effective range of up to 12km, depending on the target, selected ammunition, sensor suite and surrounding terrain. It is a flexible option for any military, offering the ability to mix a large variety of ammunition in the same firing salvo.

      Some rather huge differences.
      40mm L60 model 1936 was hand-operated with a maximum firing rate of 120 rounds/min 7 men crew.
      40 mm L70 model 1948 maximum of 24 rounds preloaded was remotely controlled or local with a servo system or hand-operated 240 rounds/min still 7 men crew.
      40mm L70 Trinity 1990 and forward 480 rounds/min 50+49 rounds in the storage, programmable fuse during firing, onboard fire control system, no crew.

    This is a no brainer. The cannon on a flatbed truck with APU and link for communication. With 3P ammunition it should be able to disrupt Russian glide bombs. Strange that it took so long to get the system out when all the components were on the shelf in February 2022.

    I think the major issue or driver at this point in history is the technology for the fusing. I served in the Marine Corps with a 25mm Bushmaster chain gun and that 25mm round (and weapons system) was amazing but it was too small to integrate a proximity fuse or any other type of fuse like a magnetic or timed delay. Once technology improves and miniaturizes the fuses then we can once again consider the smaller calibers but at this point in history that larger caliber is needed even with all the downsides of weight and volume and dimensions. We need a caliber capable of integrating technology that will allow the round to “proximity detonate” next to small nimble erratic fast flying drones. But once you are able to integrate more complex fusing into the projectile you can also delay the detonation once it gets inside the target or have the rounds detonate after a time delay to rain down sprinters above a trench or down an alley. We also need better radars able to be fielded to units that can give them a better situational awareness of the battle space. Hitting the drone is great but you need to be able to identify it first. Preferably at night, through fog, out of visual (human eye) range, through clouds. Having a small simple portable radar system would allow our warriors to locate the incoming drones and take actions (even if they have no capability to engage and stop the drones they can at least prepare in other ways). The first side to effectively develop solutions of identifying and stopping small drones (with very cheap and plentiful ammunition) is the side that is going to win on the modern battlefield. The solution for blowing the drones out of the air has to be much much cheaper and easier and faster than the act of manufacturing the drone itself. If the drones become so cheap and effective that there is no cost effective solution to stop them… then having the ability to shoot them out of the air won’t matter in the least… they’ll keep coming faster and in greater numbers than you can stop them. I’ll be interested to see how the modern battle place looks in a few more decades.

      @@KamiKaZantA Agree, I initially misinterpreted his comment to be about the 40 mm, but he's right that much smaller calibers like 25 mm don't have proximity fuses. But they also don't have as much useful range. 40 is a really good size for anti-air against small targets and maybe the minimum.

    I think it's important to remember that we're creating shorad solutions based on Ukraine's war where unfortunately they don't have air superiority nor enough armor to take positions and are thus forced to fight a static trench war, i honestly don't think the drone threat would be that high if nato would be deployed there.
    So sure build CHEAP effective shorad platforms to give to Ukraine so they can stop taking unnecessary casualties (exp against glide bombs) but lets not forget to take lesson about all the other valuable things we're learning from that war and improve the rest, example cheaper AA , better mobile arty and mlrs and shells/rockets, cheaper fire and forget AT, better engi platforms for demining/breaching fortifications and the list goes on an on.
    In the end tbh the key word here is "CHEAP", doesn't matter if we have slightly or way better everything if the opponent have the same stuff but 100x our amount because they can mass produce slightly worse stuff 100x cheaper.
