- In Philadelphia, it’s hard to make it anywhere without passing a restaurant that serves the city’s most famed culinary creation: the cheesesteak. Several spots are loved by both city natives and out-of-towners, but locals know Jim’s South Street as one of Philly's well-respected originals.
Jim's serves Philly cheesesteak the classic way, complete with Cheez Whiz, onions, and top round black Angus beef. It's been a go-to spot for cheesesteaks since 1939. Insider’s Taryn Varricchio headed to Jim’s to find out why locals say this South Street restaurant makes the best quintessential cheesesteak in Philadelphia.

Jim’s South Street Makes The Quintessential Philly Cheesesteak | Legendary Eats | Food Insider
Will Smith once said in The Fresh Prince: 'if the bag isn't soaked with grease and the sandwich isn't dripping grease it's not a philly cheesesteak'
I remember that episode. Don Cheadle played ice tray. Lol.
@@marksman4004 haha😂
Is it only me that find food dripping in grease repulsive?
@The South real food come with grease. I'm with you 100%!!!
Extremely greasy food are repulsive in my opinion, especially when the fruits I'm consuming are soaking in grease. I don't like it.
I just finished making a cheesesteak and this popped up in my recommend. I think I will close my laptop.
🤣. Curious tho. Before making that cheesesteak were you watching cheesesteak video's or in the past on a regular ? Cause that will be the reason why you would see cheesesteak video recommendation pop ups. But if you didn't do any of what I just mentioned... Yeah... Close your laptop.
Or maybe you just started noticing cheesteak videos?
I watched a clip at work on my computer with my phone in my pocket. Exact clip showed up later that day in CZcams. It’s definitely watching.
.
They listen through your phone. It happens to me all the time. Definitely everyone hears us through phones, computers and smart TV!
Uncle Jimmy took me to Jimmy's back in 1995. He grew up in Philly and bragged it was the best. He passed in Nov of 2021 in Florida and was buried in Newark. Honoring him we stopped off at Jimmy's after the funeral Service and had a Philly. I chased it down with Yuengling, brewed by the America's Oldest Brewery. Here's to you Jimmy!
Other counties: Our national foods have years and years of rich culture explaining their origins
America: Shit just happened and we kept it
I'm American and I can attest to this.
America isn't that old man, we have some food traditions though some good, some weird and good lol
Well America has a good life expectancy rate than a lot of countries out there so part credit to their food. Who gives a shxt about the culture of food nowadays anyway
@Camera c we have not had as long as other countries to set up food traditions because we just started out 200 or so years ago compared to let's say India

did a day trip to philly and stopped here. i'd never had a philly cheesesteak before and wasn't that excited by the concept, but after having my first one from this place....oh my god i haven't been able to stop thinking about it and it's been like 3 years. super good
I remember my pops bringing me to Philly years back. Grew up in Toronto Canada eating cheesesteaks and always wanted to try the OG. We lined up around the block at Jim’s and man was it worth it. Still remember watching them cook it and eating it upstairs with the grease seeping thru the wrapping paper.
“Skeptical to put process cheese on my sandwich.” Y’all picked the wrong girl for this one. Lol. Smh.

I went here over 10 years ago when a friend from Philly introduced me to cheese steaks. I was totally blown away. to this day I've never had one better and I remember this place like it was yesterday. I'm glad I don't live in Philly because I'd eat here every day and die of a heart attack lol
Did you get cheese whiz or provolone? If you got the former, you didn’t eat a true cheese steak.

Watched these guys make 50 cheese steaks with all different toppings in 8 minutes. It was insanely impressive
It is a poor man's roast beef sandwich. Libre earles always got to promote peasant food. Like smash burgers. Which were made in the Depression. So was this. And pizza. Just cheese and bread. A snack.

I had always known cheese steak as being made with provolone until Potbelly's came out with a limited time cheese steak with Cheez Wiz. That was the best sandwich I've ever had. I used to get one about once a week until they sadly stopped serving it.
4:00 That woman's excitement was legit
@Chris D'oulmeth that sounded fake to you? Sounded like an exaggeration to me, just a way to have fun.
I’ve been to this place and the cheesesteak was tremendous. The steak melted in my mouth

Good to have Jim’s back serving again.
Jim's always been one of my favorites, definitely the best of the "tourist spots". For the next level you need to hit John's Roast Pork, Phillip's, Dalessandro’s. No such thing as the best in Philly. Theres a thousand little pizza joints that sling amazing steaks you'll never hear about
🎯
never forget sonny's either
Damn. I came across the video that portrayed Pat's as the best and the comment section suggested that Jim's is the real deal and now this. 😂
@@DojKim you just go to every spot you hear of until you find one that works for you. no real objective best.
Try Big Bens, he makes them with thin cut filet mignon if you want, a bit more but omg.
American or provolone is more popular over whiz in Philly. Jim's is good, but they cut their onions too thick. Most pizza shops in the Philly area make good cheesesteaks and hoagies.
donkey ass reviews and do's that’s not a cheesesteak your making then lol
No. Its suposed to be Cheez Whiz.
@reallyellie You never had it?
I mix provolone and mozzarella on my homemade ones... 😋
Tone N and the yanks don’t make pizza correctly, so stop calling it pizza.
Went there a couple of years ago when I went on an east coast baseball trip with my dad and brother. It was fantastic! Whiz all the way! On another note Phillies ball park food is criminally underrated.
On tour with THE SIMPLETONS back in '96. We were playing The Middle East Cafe, and that afternoon we went to Jim's. I'll never forget that, and long to go back. Love Philly and the folks.
I haven't been the 3 legendary cheesecake places in over 15 years but Jim's is the best and true standout.
“The processed cheese product we all know and love”
30 seconds later: “i’m a bit skeptical about getting the whiz because i’m not familiar with it”
Checked the ingredients of Cheezewiz. Holy crap! That stuff will put you into an early grave!
Why you'd want to eat synthetic cheeze puke on a steak sandwich is beyond me. As a native Chicagoan, I'll take the cheeseless Italian Beef sandwich any day! Cheese--real cheese--belongs on a pizza.
@@whatevershebrings So cheese should only be on pizza? That is really dumb lmao.
I love Jim's, shame they burned down but now they're rebuilding and expanding! I love going there when I rarely go into Philly, there's not really a best, I think, but they're my favorite. Whiz, provolone and fried onions
Now this is what I call Originality. Hope to visit Philly soon

Jim’s on South Street is absolutely bomb. My favorite
Jim’s my favorite spot for a steak, I’m so glad it’s getting a video, cheesesteaks are my favorite food.
Jim’s is touristy and overpriced BUT, they do make a good cheesesteak, at least better than the other touristy spots. The thing is in Philly you can get a really good cheesesteak almost anywhere, so places like Jim’s, Pats, Genos, etc. aren’t much of a draw to locals unless you’re hammered late night and need sustenances.
Yeah. And Jims has a secret place to eat and im not saying where it is.

If the place in Texas has bread similar to the one in Philly it should be good enough overall. Making a good enough cheesesteak is not rocket science. It’s not that hard to do
Best cheesesteaks ever . Went two years ago to Philly from Texas and I miss them crazy
Can always watch these kind of videos. Cheese steaks? Yes please.
I asked a Philly native "where do you go?" and he said Jim's was his preferred place. This was 15+ years ago.
They must not try other places then.
I hate processed cheese but this incredible. I honestly love their cheesesteaks. Best I have ever eaten.
Jim’s is great , I love it there but there are so many places in and around Philly to get a really good cheesesteak lots of little mom and pop places I love checking out random corner stores that have hoagies and cheesesteaks as there are so many in the area. Not taking anything away from Jim’s because they are delicious!
The hype is real! We came from jersey tried both the original with wiz and I also tried the chicken cheesesteak with sharp provolone and were the best cheesesteaks I’ve had in my life hands 🙌🏼 down also fyi the line is huge so if u go to the bar right across u can still order a Jim’s steak top priority so u don’t have to make the line 🤗

I have created what will be called the Seward Style Cheese Steak, everyone who has one always say WOW at the first bite and it is a very favorable sandwich. It is more complex but the taste is phenomenal. We make dozens a day with a small population. When this pandemic is done and we fill up again with cruise ships and tourists watch out, it will be legendary.
Seward ,Alaska,yes?
Been there, it's cool.
Seward is too close to the word sewer, trash collects from rain and floats down into the sewer at the street corner, ain't that right?
Next time say, "Lowell Point" instead.
This is the third food video I have watched and now I can smell it cooking.
I make sure to watch this at least once a month cause i know i can’t have it. This is what true pain is…

Who remember when Will didn’t want the cheesesteak Uncle Phil gave him from Beverly Hills
Striing B Shit had no grease 😂😂
That shit was made with polly-o string cheese
What a punk treating Uncle Phil like that. Like Phil didn't know a good cheesestake because of who he became. Being a man who knows a good cheese steak wasn't something he was trying to be! It was something he was!Phil was running the same cheesestake race, and jumping the same cheesestake hurdles as him, so why was he tripping him up? Will claimed they needed to stick together, but he didn't even know what that meant. If you ask me, Will was the real sellout. 😤

I was in the Philadelphia area about 15 years ago on business and decided to try a Philli cheese steak to see what the big deal was. I don’t know if I was starving or what but I gotta say, the hype is real.
If you live in a major city in America, you can get a cheesesteak. Because of the internet non Philly cooks are now more educated on the details so it’s possible to get a decent clone or even a very good clone
I’m really excited about this! I prefer provolone on mine. So yummy!

I was expecting the whiz thing to start a war in the comments, surprised that no one touched on it. I am a whizwit guy but I hear a lot of back and forth about the right cheese for a Philly. But we can agree on one thing, Steves Prince of steaks is also my favorite
