  • Kawasaki City is an ordinance-designated city with a population of approximately 1.54 million located in the northeastern part of Kanagawa Prefecture. It borders Tokyo across the Tama River. It is an elongated terrain similar to Italy, sandwiched between Yokohama and Tokyo. People living in the northern and central parts of Kawasaki City often go to Setagaya, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and other wards in Tokyo, and rarely go to the central area of Kawasaki City. They are like Tokyo residents living in Kanagawa Prefecture.
While the waterfront area of Kawasaki led Japan's era of rapid economic growth (1960s-70s) as the core of the Keihin Industrial Zone, the negative side was rapid environmental degradation, resulting in enormous pollution, including air and water pollution. Once known as the "Smoke Capital," the gray image of the city has been erased through image improvement projects by the City Government. In 2002, "LA CITTADELLA " a commercial complex that includes a movie theater and restaurants, opened, enhancing the image of Kawasaki City.
I lived in Kawasaki City for nine years. In addition to spending my college years there, it was also my first assignment after I started working there. I acquired the foundation of my work skills in Kawasaki. Kawasaki is my second hometown, so to speak. This time, I visited for the first time in five years.
I stayed at the Kawasaki Nikko Hotel, which is located at the east exit of JR Kawasaki Station. When I see the red Keihin Express train crossing the east exit of Kawasaki Station, I am deeply moved that I have come to Kawasaki City. This area is the center of Kawasaki City, one of the Kanto region's leading downtown areas and entertainment districts, and there is a huge commercial facility, Lazona Kawasaki Plaza, at the west exit of JR Kawasaki Station. It was built on the site of a former Toshiba plant. It is no exaggeration to say that Kawasaki City has developed together with Toshiba, and there are many Toshiba bases in Kawasaki City. The area around JR Kawasaki Station is very bustling.
It has been a while since I visited "Kappo Onuma," "Monarizan" and "Tea Room Morino. Kappo Onuma" is a long-established eel restaurant established more than 80 years ago, located about 10 minutes on foot from the east exit of JR Kawasaki Station. I had the box of rice topped with spitchcocked eel. It is a delicious, well-balanced Kanto style spitchcocked eel with just the right tenderness, just the right amount of spiciness from the soy sauce, and just the right amount of sweetness. Monarizan is a famous long-established Italian restaurant located about a 6-minute walk from the East Exit of JR Kawasaki Station. You can enjoy very tasty dishes at reasonable prices. I really miss the days when I used to spend long hours with my colleagues at work, sipping Italian wine and chatting. The peperoncino spaghetti at this restaurant is excellent. Tea Room Morino is an old-fashioned coffee shop that used to be near the office where I worked. Little has changed since then. My boss, whom I hated, used to skip work at this restaurant. I had a popular dish of curry rice and ketchup-flavored spaghetti on a plate. I was full.
In the evening, I went to Umi-Shibaura Station, a popular "unexplored station in the city. This station is located in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama City. Residents may be offended, but it is in fact like the Tsurumi Ward of Kawasaki City, not Yokohama City. Umi-Shibaura Station is the terminus of the JR Tsurumi Line and is located on the site of a Toshiba plant. The station is privately owned, so only those related to Toshiba are allowed to leave the station, which is for the benefit of the Toshiba plant. Nevertheless, tourists also visit the station for its rarity and beautiful scenery. There is a small park called "Umi-Shiba Park" at the end of the station, where visitors can take a leisurely rest until the departure time of the train that returns to Tsurumi Station.
Keihin Fushimi Inari Jinja Shrine is located near Musashi Kosugi Station, about 10 minutes from JR Kawasaki Station on the Nambu Line. The shrine has a relatively new history, having been founded after World War II. The shrine have received the divided tutelary deity of "Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine" in Kyoto and is famous for its 108 statues of divine foxes as well as its powerful shrine pavilion. It is a popular hidden spot.
My love for Kawasaki City never stops, but I wonder when I will visit the city again...
