  • Steve explains the clamping action that makes the Shopsmith so versatile. He demonstrates how to take advantage of the Shopsmith's design to accomplish horizontal boring, drilling, routing, shaping, and drum sander operations without having the table or fence move.

Nice overview Steve. Food for thought. I have experienced some of the slippage you described.

I was using my Mark 7 in drill press mode using and making plug cutters, I thought I was going crazy finding the plugs were changing depth and having to change the quill because the stroke length was changing ever so slightly during each plug.
I like your content, it's practical and useful, thanks!

I have used shopsmiths for 40 years and never had a carriage or headstock move unless I forgot to tighten. Now the fence when horizontal boring on the old 500s would for sure move but the 510 is really rock solid. Now I never have found reason to upgrade to a 520 so I cant say. But the trick of the wood in the miter slot I have done on the 500 a few times mostly when using a mortise bit as you do put a insane amount of pressure down, But even then and in drill press I have never had the table slide down. I do use my support polls on my 510 when mortising on the 510 to help stop flex but that is all. The cam locks on the tubes are plenty strong

Same 40 plus years experience here with the same machines. However, I have not been as fortunate as you regarding the movement issue.

Great video. On my Power Pro I have had problems doing under table routing and the fence moving on me no matter how hard I fasten the fence. I am cutting a rabbit so I am not putting pressure against the fence but the fence would move. Why? I wonder if at 10,000 rpm if the vibrations at that frequency causes the fence to move? Thoughts.

An interesting tip for horizontal boring, but it could have been a concise 5-minute video.
