    Just to let Jay know... If you go to the Motoscan URL and ask them what the code is, they will tell you. It may take a few days, but they told me i had a bad ignition coil #3. Great review! :)

    Jay Bear, you looked at ONE aspect between the two. I have both and the GS-911 did not do the job.
    The GS-911 does not allow for coding, so that is its issue. For years now I have gone to the Hex Code Function Chart and for my K51 Service Functionality - Instrument Cluster it states "Future". Well in what century will that future be in?
    I bought what I call a grossly-overpriced GS-911 back in 2016 (GS-911 WiFi - 10-pin Model - the red one) and I could not do something as simple as a 12H to 24H clock change on my instrument panel, and no, it could not be done using the on-bike menus.
    Lets see now CA$564 for a GS-911 compared to a CA$225 MotoScan (OBDLink MX+ CA$139.99, BMW 10-pin to OBDII adapter cable CA$24.89 and MotoScan Ultimate CA$59.75), the MotoScan is doing that the GS-911 would not do. Plus the OBDLink MX+ can be used on cars as well.

      I looked at a lot of functionality, and there are definitely differences. That's why I say if you're looking to just reset a service light or do some light monkeying around the Motoscan is great - regardless of the price. But I personally bought it as a diagnostic tool and in that realm it was not able to tell me what the -911 did. On your bike with only 2 cylinders exposed in the wind, a coil failure isn't that tough to troubleshoot. On my bike it would have been a HUGE pain to not know which was I was replacing before starting the teardown. I gotta tell ya, I do enjoy having both of them though. And no, I'm not addicted. I can stop buying tools anytime I want. Honest... :)

      Exactly. I bought the GS911 years ago and the lackluster upgrade path and the fact that the motoscan allows me to change the TPS monitors is a clear reason why I dumped the hexcode and went with motoscan.

    I appreciate the side by side comparison. What if you would have compared the Pro version of Motoscan app and the MX adapter with the latest firmware to the GS911 tool. Do you think results would have been the same. I have personally used my Motoscan to read codes, clear codes, activate ABS pump to do brake bleed and flush, reset service reminders and program TPMS. It will do more but that is all I have needed so far.
    What it doesnt do is limit it to a specific bike or limit the number of bikes it can be used on. Thats a huge benefit for those of us that have multiple bikes and trade often.
    The OBDLink MX adapter cost me $55, the Pro version of the software was $50 and the cable was $10. So for the $115 investment it is a much better value than the GS911 tool.
    The only drawback you indicated that was valad was the lack of a description on the code itself. I will live with having to do an internet search for a code description for the extra $200 dollars. The Motoscan software and OBDLink firmware are ALWAYS improving and Pro version get all the new features for free. I have been a user for 4 years.

    • @JayBearjaysbigadventure
      @JayBearjaysbigadventure  Před 3 lety +1

      There's no question the Motoscan tool is a great value. And it could just be a coil identification issue with the K1600 - which means for virtually everything else it would be a comparable tool for a LOT less money. If I had an R bike there's no question Motoscan would be the way to go.

    Nice job on the comparison. This is the first I've seen of the motoscan application, as I own the GS-911 for my R1200RT. It isn't surprising that the motoscan does less, considering the price difference and maturity of the product. Some folks might be happy enough with the phone app, but for those who prefer to get down in the weeds working on their own bike it looks like the GS-911 is superior.

    • @JayBearjaysbigadventure

      When I did this video, there WERE no explanations on this trouble code, which is why I had to buy the GS 911. I think since this video came out there's one clear explanation that it is the 2nd cylinder in the firing order - as opposed to cylinder #2. With an R-bike it's not that big a deal, but at $179 x 6, I didn't want to guess as to which coil was bad, or worse yet spend over $1000 to replace them all. As a writer, I've always got my laptop and I think they have a phone interface now as well.

    • @williammorrow5816
      @williammorrow5816 Před 2 lety

      Temperatur of the exhaust runners can detect pinpoint a bad coil also.
      Then can swap a coil with another to see if the problem follows. Process of elimination.
