Just to let Jay know... If you go to the Motoscan URL and ask them what the code is, they will tell you. It may take a few days, but they told me i had a bad ignition coil #3. Great review! :)
Jay Bear, you looked at ONE aspect between the two. I have both and the GS-911 did not do the job.
The GS-911 does not allow for coding, so that is its issue. For years now I have gone to the Hex Code Function Chart and for my K51 Service Functionality - Instrument Cluster it states "Future". Well in what century will that future be in?
I bought what I call a grossly-overpriced GS-911 back in 2016 (GS-911 WiFi - 10-pin Model - the red one) and I could not do something as simple as a 12H to 24H clock change on my instrument panel, and no, it could not be done using the on-bike menus.
Lets see now CA$564 for a GS-911 compared to a CA$225 MotoScan (OBDLink MX+ CA$139.99, BMW 10-pin to OBDII adapter cable CA$24.89 and MotoScan Ultimate CA$59.75), the MotoScan is doing that the GS-911 would not do. Plus the OBDLink MX+ can be used on cars as well.
I looked at a lot of functionality, and there are definitely differences. That's why I say if you're looking to just reset a service light or do some light monkeying around the Motoscan is great - regardless of the price. But I personally bought it as a diagnostic tool and in that realm it was not able to tell me what the -911 did. On your bike with only 2 cylinders exposed in the wind, a coil failure isn't that tough to troubleshoot. On my bike it would have been a HUGE pain to not know which was I was replacing before starting the teardown. I gotta tell ya, I do enjoy having both of them though. And no, I'm not addicted. I can stop buying tools anytime I want. Honest... :)
Exactly. I bought the GS911 years ago and the lackluster upgrade path and the fact that the motoscan allows me to change the TPS monitors is a clear reason why I dumped the hexcode and went with motoscan.
Thanks for the video, very useful. Will the motoscan app do a re calibration of the esa suspension, I know the 911 does. Cheers from NZ.
I've not tried that, but thanks for the idea for another video! Currently freezing rain/snow here, so it's gonna have to wait until spring...
Thank you for posting this video. I didn't even know the Motoscan app existed. I have two K- bikes and I think this could come in handy.
Any chance you could put up a link for the cables and Bluetooth trickery. 👍🏻
My family has been ravaged by Alzheimers however, I saw nothing in your video or props to cause me to think of it. Again, I urge you to consider leaving it out of your presentations at least until the credits roll. If it intruded any further, you would lose audience due to frustration alone. Thanks for listening.
So sorry I missed this last year! @@TonyLemWoodsPhillips My father and both his sister died of Alzheimer. It's deep and it's personal, but I don't expect the rest of the world to share my perspective - as a matter of fact I hope they never do.
I appreciate the side by side comparison. What if you would have compared the Pro version of Motoscan app and the MX adapter with the latest firmware to the GS911 tool. Do you think results would have been the same. I have personally used my Motoscan to read codes, clear codes, activate ABS pump to do brake bleed and flush, reset service reminders and program TPMS. It will do more but that is all I have needed so far.
What it doesnt do is limit it to a specific bike or limit the number of bikes it can be used on. Thats a huge benefit for those of us that have multiple bikes and trade often.
The OBDLink MX adapter cost me $55, the Pro version of the software was $50 and the cable was $10. So for the $115 investment it is a much better value than the GS911 tool.
The only drawback you indicated that was valad was the lack of a description on the code itself. I will live with having to do an internet search for a code description for the extra $200 dollars. The Motoscan software and OBDLink firmware are ALWAYS improving and Pro version get all the new features for free. I have been a user for 4 years.
There's no question the Motoscan tool is a great value. And it could just be a coil identification issue with the K1600 - which means for virtually everything else it would be a comparable tool for a LOT less money. If I had an R bike there's no question Motoscan would be the way to go.
Hello🙋♂️can moto scan reset the quick shifter on a s1000rr? Thanks
@@bolitedando5307 Erko, that is a really good question, and one I don't know the answer to, sorry. There may be esoteric functions that still require the dealer. If nothing else it is still useful for a lot of other stuff. Download it and give it a whirl!
Hello.do you know if i can do coding with moto scan and obdlink (lx or mx+)?
I have the app,i have an obd (Konwei) but i can't code with it.i can reset service,i can check errors but i can't activate some functions.i want to know if i will buy obdlink Lx or mx+ ,it will be possible to code with it.Thank you
@@ghostdogjohnny86 I have changed and played with the coding abilities but unsure about what you need to change. Best email the creator of the app.
I have the gs 911 but it doesn't have near the functionality that yours appears to have. I seem to have a bad coil but I had to email the report to S. Africa to get them to tell me what the report meant. There was no way for me to figure out what the actual problem was.
Have you reached out to the company? They've been really responsive when I've emailed them. There may be something you can do to open up the rest of the functions. Best of luck!
Agree with you, however unless you purchase the better LX or MX Obd2 module, you may have issues resetting the service lights. ( needs to be bake to pass long messages).
Also the expert level allows you to do a few notes 911 like services
You're 100% correct and ended up getting an MX for that reason.
Thank you for the Video. Is it possible to reset the Service-message in the dashboard with the konnwei KW902 OBD-Adapter? In the description from MOTOSCAN you have to use OBDLink LX or the UniCarScan. Thanxx ;-)
I was not able to make the konnwei work. I bought the OBDLink and it works great for everything so far!
THey clearly state on the ANdroid app page that it only works with the MX and LX brands.
Kind of curious, did you notice any sort of misfire or engine rough running prior the ECU throwing a fault code for the coil?
Nope, it was pretty instantaneous. The coil died, the misfiring started and the code showed up all at the same time.
Just to correct there is a mobile version of the GS-911 available.
And I heard they have an upgrade program too. Gotta look into that for sure.
Nice job on the comparison. This is the first I've seen of the motoscan application, as I own the GS-911 for my R1200RT. It isn't surprising that the motoscan does less, considering the price difference and maturity of the product. Some folks might be happy enough with the phone app, but for those who prefer to get down in the weeds working on their own bike it looks like the GS-911 is superior.
Actually the GS-911 does less since I own them both.
@@a.c.e.7568 whats you mean
I have a obdlink lx and the MotoScan . They are make the service light from the R 1250 GS 2020 without problem
Yes, it was a problem with the cheap adapter. With an OBDLink it works fine.
Hello sir what if i buy another ten pin diagnostic tools? Or is this green one better than everyone?
The green one had issues connecting to some bikes, so now I use this one. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006NZTZLQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Can you reset the service reminders with the Motoscan app
Yes you can. You'll need a better OBD2 scanner though. The cheap ones won't do the long-string coding that is necessary. The one in the video wouldn't do it, so I bought an OBDLink MX and it works great!
@@JayBearjaysbigadventure Thank you Sir
Can you tell what scanner use
I use the OBDlink MX currently, as it works for cars and motorcycles as well. Love it!
One great thing with the Motoscan is that you don't need your laptop. Bonus if you are touring on the bike.
Since I write a lot, I always have mine with me. Admittedly, the Motoscan is what I carry on short trips, close to Utah. :)
Has anyone managed to purchase the software, I can't do it. Am in Zambia, Africa. I can buy stuff online but this, am told I need to use google play, I tried paypal it fails too, It's so annoying! I have the green thing, like I wasted my monies. Reliably informed its for US and Germany based folks😔
Well, if you just put the unknown fault code into google, you are already at 3/4 way to pinpointing the actual fault. And second, Motoscan and adapter always lives stored on the motorcycle, whenever I go. Already saved me thousands of kilometers away from home. Carrying laptop on a moto trip? No thanks ;)
When I did this video, there WERE no explanations on this trouble code, which is why I had to buy the GS 911. I think since this video came out there's one clear explanation that it is the 2nd cylinder in the firing order - as opposed to cylinder #2. With an R-bike it's not that big a deal, but at $179 x 6, I didn't want to guess as to which coil was bad, or worse yet spend over $1000 to replace them all. As a writer, I've always got my laptop and I think they have a phone interface now as well.
Temperatur of the exhaust runners can detect pinpoint a bad coil also.
Then can swap a coil with another to see if the problem follows. Process of elimination.
Apple Phone? Apple Laptop? Guessing out of luck either way.
Well the good news is you can buy a cheap used phone for under $100. You don't need to have cell service. A pain, but it is a viable work-around.
Thanks for the info. I learned a lot. However, I would ask that you lose the stuffed animal. It distracts and cheapens your message. Thanks again for your time invested in the video.
The purpose of the channel is to raise awareness for the Alzheimer's Association. He is in all my videos as a mascot for the channel. I appreciate your input however.
