Also on the exhaust side, any trick manifold ideas for scavenging would surely be nullified by back-pressure before the turbine. I had a very similar problem with my 300Tdi head. The 90 used a little coolant and used to belch out steam for the first couple of miles in the morning, proper road filling fog.. but otherwise ran OK. Took it to my local LR specialist who had the head 'pressure tested'. Allegedly the head passed the pressure test, was skimmed and it was rebuilt with a new head gasket......No difference. As a test I used to park up on the night and release the pressure in the header tank. It would start the following morning with no steam. I ended up doing the job myself with a multi layer gasket (specialist had fitted a composite), new head bolts and a Turner gas flowed head. It has been utterly perfect since and, thanks to your brilliant advice and guidance, was a really enjoyable job to do. Cheers Mike. Happy New Year!

Yes as have I. I had a 1997 disco commercial that towed a big trailer daily and it chewed through several heads the last one was so bad you couldn’t keep water in the bloody thing. This has been different though. Apart from lots of seals I didn’t touch the lump when I rebuilt it as it was running great. After two years of restore/rebuild it just has not been very powerful. I put it back on the road in October and not once towing has it even got hot or used water. Fuel economy on the floor and oil still clean from service but not used a drop of water or oil. The coolant is a vile colour though hence it started me thinking about heads etc.

Wasn't at least one core plug changed on that engine it had silicon sealer on it, probably had problems sealing it as the hole was slightly out of shape. You wouldn't keep the coolant in that engine very long with those massive cracks, you would be lucky to get to the end of the road with those leaks. It's a pity you didn't have a flow meter on your test rig, you could calculate the leak rate.
