      Like theres no way you cant tell me that Kaiba's flaunting of money in the newer movies isnt a reference to "screw the rules, I have money", especially since prior to the abridged series, kaiba was somewhat lowkey in flaunting his money unless he needed to.

      I kinda felt like that was some way of Atem, showing he's watching over even Kaiba...without Kaiba actually knowing or asking for it. The fact Obelisk had his head dress from acient Egypt, made me think that. Coupled with him pulling Joey's ass out of the fire, and then showing up to save everyone...made it felt like, he's kinda watching over them all.

    One thing in particular that stood out to me was how they strategically used themes from Duel Monsters for the maximum emotional impact. They knew their audience grew up listening to this music during all their favorite memories, and used the soundtrack to expertly call back those memories when it would benefit most. They even swapped the soundtrack out with the English version to ensure this was the case for Western audiences, since Duel Monsters' soundtrack was totally replaced when it was dubbed. I normally object to the idea of replacing any music in a soundtrack, but the deliberate effort to play on the audience's nostalgia made it totally worth it.

      they dedicated all their resources into this movie, they pulled out all the writers that were writing the Yugioh arc V series in hopes that this movie will generate newer fans. This was a tribute to their fans who first watched the original Yugioh Duel monsters series. I say the risks played out well and I loved the movie so much, they honored that original series at the same time showed some fresh things and concepts we old Yugioh fans were never exposed of.

      Plus it was given back to the writer who made Yu-Gi-Oh! To begin with, Kazuchi Takahashi. I feel like it works so well is because Takahashi didn’t really make the story of Yu-Gi-Oh! As a card game, so he’s able to push aside that fact and focus on a story rather than a giant commercial.

      Personal theory - this moment is why carvings of Priest Seto vs Pharoah Atem appear everywhere, despite Seto being shown to be one of Atem's closest allies in Season 5 and also half brother, as well as Dark Magician not existing as part of Atem's arsenal until Zorc Necrophades was already out and about. There was really no time in that whole period between Bakura's emergence and Atem's death and sealing of Zorc to have that battle with Seto as shown throughout the Battle City arc, but what if the Seto in the tablet isn't Priest Seto, but Seto Kaiba?

    slight error in the beginning, DSoD is set in the Manga's continuity which differs from the Anime, example being Kaiba was never present during the ceremonial duel the last time Kaiba ever saw Atem was in Battle city arc, which adds more weight to Kaiba's obsession because during the memory world arc in the anime, Kaiba got to have one last adventure with him and have some sort of closure, especially when he acknowledged that Yugi had the power to beat the egyptian gods. Which goes into stark contrast with how DSOD portrays him as Kaiba flat out overlooks Yugi and sees him only as a vessel for the pharaoh which in turn contradicts Kaiba's growth from the anime's ending.
    other then that, nothing else in your review was off, everything was perfectly describing how great this story closed off everyone's character arc and gave us a great experience with seeing characters who we have wanted to know what happened to them after their story ended. I think my favorite part of this whole movie is not just the fact Yugi misses but doesn't desire to bring Atem back, it's the fact Yugi has all the confidence of Atem! He finally grew up with all of Atem's help. He THREATENED KAIBA AND KAIBA FOLDED. Like, that was SUCH a moment.
    And with Kaiba, it was perfect. In many ways, Kaiba and Atem's relationship is perhaps one of the most complex in the series. There's way too much baggage between them, not to mention how much Atem helped Kaiba deal with the darker parts of himself (Death-T, Kaiba's adoptive abusive father, etc). No matter what, it HAD to be Kaiba wanting to bring back the Pharaoh, and THANK GOD THEY DID THAT. Biggest question is: how does the technology he invented translate into GX and 5D's?

    • @yami-no-kami3586
      @yami-no-kami3586 Před 3 lety +2

      I was wondering about the technology part as well and the only explanation I have for its absence in gx and 5d's is that Seto had to shut it down again.
      I can imagine that a bunch of people figured out how to abuse this technology for the sake of destruction and that it became very likely that something like Zarc and Leo Akaba's realistic holograms would happen. And unlike Leo Seto was able to see what might come and decided to make the world go back to the original duel disks before things could escalate.
      I know it's a very loose theory and gives room to some questions, but this is the only explanation I can think of.

      2 years later,but fairly decent.
      GX takes place roughly 10 years after DM, that's why Yugi is like 30 when handing W. Kuriboh to Jaden.
      Then came Zexal.

    What I loved most about the movie was 1: Kaiba summoning Obelisk and being absolutely badass while doing it and 2: The Duel between Kaiba and Yugi and how they left it to be open ended. Remember, Kaiba's HP never went down to 0, he still had a facedown card and he had the smile on his face like he was about to pull some sick move. They made it seem like Yugi would win but heavily hinted that Kaiba has an ace up his sleeve.
    What I didn't like was the main antagonist. He lost against Kaiba, he lost against Yugi so what conclusion does he come to? Let's duel both of them at the same time, that sounds like a smart idea amirite?

      Zorc is the eternal enemy of the Pharoah (and humanity as a whole). Not having him manifest (albeit differently) would have been missing a key aspect of the series.
      This is also why the last duel made sense: That wasn't really Diva, but Zorc manifested through him (much as Yami Bakura was a hybrid of Zorc and Bakura). He's a distinct entity, and one far more powerful than Diva alone.

    I was a huge Yu-Gi-Oh fan, remembering fondly the original series. As a kid, I would come home from school everyday switching to channel WB (Which i miss) to watch Yu-Gi-Oh. Personally preferring it over Pokemon.
    Coming by this movie by sheer coincidence, buying it on CZcams, and have just watched it, I was fully engaged! I agree the duels felt more like a homage than what they really were like in the original series. But i didnt think of that as a bad thing. It was nice to see an eveloution of the game in that world. Act 1's pacing was extremely fast. The first hour felt like 30 minutes or less to me. The pacing in Act 2 was a bit off, but for me picked up in Act 3. The story i thought was brilliant. It brought me back as a child. I teared up at the end. It makes me yearn to watch the original series once again. And I am willingly to buy it again as a physical copy!

    I really love Dark Side of dimensions and it makes me all the more angry that I never got a chance to see it in theaters. But now that I have seen it it shed some light in a good amount of things that I really loved about the original series and it even does a good job of finishing everything off for all the characters involved with the original series. Character development was on point, the villain was interesting, we learned a bit more about certain characters and while the dimension dueling was basically original Yu-Gi-Oh but updated the duels were fine. Even I will admit that this movie isn't perfect but I still enjoyed it way more than Pyramid of Light because this one actually does feel like it's in Cannon and it doesn't screw up anything the original series did so all in all this is a pretty good movie. Besides we get to hear Dan Green and Eric Stuart one last time as Kaiba and Yugi so that has to mean something.

    You're on point! I watched the Japanese version. The emotions were raw and could be felt, especially for Kaiba who had formed some form of attachment with Yami Yugi/Atem that his subconscious grief led him into pushing his obsession real far. Like you, I did find the dialogues and interactions between characters were what propelled the story forward to its climax. And like you too, I did enjoy the duels until halfway through the last scenes. I was simply beginning to lose my attention during Yugi vs. Diva, and by the time it was Yugi vs. Kaiba, I became less interested. Sadly, I did not find the team-up between Yugi and Kaiba vs. the notorious form of Diva to be intense - or higher stakes, since the world was beginning to be engulfed in darkness - because I couldn't wait for the whole thing to end. I mean - end, not resolved. Maybe because of trying to digest what the duelists were playing with their cards.
    Other noteworthy points that I enjoyed? The return of Atem was paying a tribute to fans, and you described it perfectly how it was like for him to return on his own accord. It fits his own closure to Yugi. Although I was shocked that he initially lost to Kaiba at the start, I believe the writers paid him some respect by making Kaiba defeating only a simulation of him, but not the real Atem, which also drove one of purposes of the movie even more. Even Mahad/the original Dark Magician played an important role despite a short amount of screen time. His presence to aid Atem was simply nostalgic as he continued to serve him since before the original series, throughout the series, and the pivotal climax. I also like how Kaiba's technology was made to bridge the "logic" in Yu-Gi-Oh universe for the spin-offs series (like the solid vision in Arc-V), e.g. a new duel disk that could create your own reality with just a thought, as how shown when Diva's magic could not consume Kaiba, and the latter imagining a jet being blasted by his Blue Eyes towards the end of the movie. It also showed how dangerous his mind had become due to his obsession. All in all, despite the duels were draining, the plot was excellent than the first Yu-Gi-Oh movie, i.e. The Pyramid of Light.

    • @junkim5853
      @junkim5853 Před 5 lety +3

      I think another thing most people missed which the movie did excellently was Kaiba's hidden jealousy towards Yugi, Kaiba considers Yugi nothing but a vessel but he knows Yugi was able to defeat Atem which Kaiba never achieved and I think I could say part of the reason Kaiba belittles Yugi and talks down on him is because of the sole fact that he accomplished something Kaiba tried all his life and he knows he may never ever be able to accomplish defeating Atem again.

    Oh, and to be fair to the duels, they actually ARE following the post-season 1 Rules, even bumping up the LP count to the proper 8000, rather than the usual 4000. It only seems like Season 1 style summoning due to them summoning via card effects and chains, rather than just summoning Lv 5 up w/o Tributes. And those are VERY fast effect chains, which helps the shorter run-time allowed for the 5 duels in this movie total. What probably doesn't help is that they don't seem to make it clear that a turn has started or ended, or if an effect is activating on the player's turn or the other's turn.

At the end of the series whenever Yugi yelled out an attack he sounded like a child yelling even though the character was supposed to be like 16 (i think). YES there is so much I love about this movie!! They did Kaiba so much justice in this film. I loved the ending to the original series, but it only had time to focus on the dynamics between Yugi and Atem, while Kaiba just sort of had to stand to the side. I feel that with this movie there is finally a satisfying 'ending' to the rivalry between Yugi and Kaiba. I really love how Atem stood up at the end - he wasn't annoyed or dismissive. He respected Seto and was happy to continue where they left off.

    1. Yugi never used Silent Magician. I mean come on she beat BOTH Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl 1v2 AND struck the final blow against Atem in the Ceremonial Duel, she's practically Yugi's ace monster.
    2. Joey never dueled.
    Past that yeah, DSoD was how you do a nostalgia trip 100% right.

  • @LucianDevine
    @LucianDevine Před rokem +3

    You are absolutely right! This movie did what most modern cinema is failing to do. It gave us the nostalgia we wanted while also building upon it's past instead of trying to erase it. The motives of all of the protagonists are perfect, especially Kaiba. Yugi is struggling with Atem's absence, but makes no effort to try and bring him back. So it falls to Kaiba to try and either bring him back or go back to him. You are also right that this is 100% something Kaiba would do.
    One small thing that I liked was when Kaiba didn't hesitate for a second to team with Yugi against Deva. He's never liked having to rely on others to win, but he's grown enough to know when it's necessary. I also LOVE that the real Atem never says a single word! He comes back to save his friend, wordlessly draws a card and plays it without looking, and wins the dual. Then he and Yugi just stand there and look at each other.Then, when Yugi nods, Atem disappears. Even when Kaiba finally finds a way to go back to face Atem, he just stands up and smiles.
    It doesn't matter who won the dual between Atem and Kaiba, because he also has a worthy rival in the present, Yugi. I think that's why he smiled when Yugi was about to beat him. Even if Atem was gone forever, or at least for now, he at least has Yugi to beat before he can worry about Atem once more.

    Aside from the pacing and some huge exposition dumps about Prana, I really wanted Yami Bakura to return as the true villain of the story, just like he was in Duel Monsters. All the foreshadowing of Yami Bakura and the cameo even, and they dropped it. Yes, it would've underpinned Aigami a bit, but it would've made a great antagonist VS antagonist moment (particularly the scene when Aigami confronts Bakura, and the Ring reappears).

    • @TheAwkwardSilent
      @TheAwkwardSilent Před 6 lety

      I do agree, as I love any moment Yami Bakura is on screen - that being said, it helps that the Spirit of the Millennium Ring IS Yami Bakura, just as much as the spirit of the puzzle is Yami Yugi - it's simply Yami Bakura in a different form. He was still the main antagonist, and even though we didn't get to see him in his normal body again, he did finish the series as the "final boss".

    • @holyordersol2668
      @holyordersol2668 Před 6 lety +6

      Yes, it's true that Spirit of the Ring is the Yami / Zorc Necrophades part of Bakura, but it's not the same without him using Bakura's body. I had to concede that fact to myself as consolation, but it's like a finely roasted chicken vs deep-fried chicken. They're both still chicken, but distinctly different in taste.
      I still think it would've been much better drama for Yami Bakura to have taken the stage as the true villain, bc Aigami's reason(s) felt too flimsy. He swayed back and forth at times in the movie, and it felt forced. It would've been far more believable (to me, at least) that when Aigami was about to realize his folly, that the Spirit of the Ring repossessed Bakura.

( for instance when Kaiba attacked defense castle of yugi (3500 def) with chaos max it wouldve dealt 4500 dmg to his LP and even if for some weird asss reason the black magician absorbs 2500 of it it still would be 2k dmg but Yugi only takes 1000???? (at a later stage hes left with 600 so Kaiba wouldve won by then)
    -concept of the Plana didnt fgeel right to me. Millenium pieces where much more epic in the series

    What I feel is great about dark side of dimensions is that since it's a movie that was made years after its original end date(minus the spin offs) is that it still kept a lot of the elements that created the original series and continued. It explored more of Yugi's character which was something we hardly got from season 1-4 and only until season 5 in the last few episodes. It also shows how each character moves on with a reasonable and more respectable way with Tristan, Joey, and Tea moving on with their lives and while Yugi still does move on he still keeps the memories of Atem within him and not let it tear him apart unlike how most shows that get extensions do to their characters. While I do see other features remain the same with a touch up what I like most about this franchise is that even though its air time is over the story of the characters we watched just isn't over and it leaves it in a way that if they want to the can continue it, but at the same time leave it open and let the fans take it in while also not kill off the show. Take Dragon Ball and its sequels, while it keeps the memorable Goku and his companions at every end point they continues the story with new add ons and while this work for the most part it gets repetitive and results in the elements of the show losing its value with the original showing Goku's fight for justice and wish to better himself to end up him becoming essentially a god level fighter who just wants to fight with no reason(yes I know it's his saiyin blood, but that's not the point.).

    As a long time Yu-Gi-Oh! fan, I was excited to see they were releasing the movie, and even went so far as to preorder tickets. While I'm on the same page as you about the whole Dimension Dueling thing being kind of a cop-out, not only did it maintain the spirit of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series, but also was as close to the physical card game as it's ever been. One of my friends summed it up this way: "Dark Side of Dimensions did what Monsters University did for it's fans." While I don't think it was spot on in comparison, I can see the point they were making. It was not only a proper sequel (I'd go so far as to say the perfect one for the original series), but it also had the characters growing up and moving on with their lives, much like the people that grew up playing the game, with some walking away from the game and others still participating in it. Was it the perfect movie as a whole? Despite my praise, I'd say no. But as a long time fan, and as someone who was going through a pretty dark place in my childhood back at that time, it was nice seeing the characters one last time, and seeing how they had grown as well. So it was definitely worth watching, and definitely very well done.

    One of my favorite aspects from the movie has to be the look on kaiba's face when he sees the puzzle get completed. Just that whole scene in fact. From the slow way that Yugi walks up to the puzzle, kaiba's surprise, and the last puzzle piece echoing. All of that combined with the look of devastation on kaiba's face was absolutely perfect. To me that scene said that he didn't want to accept that he couldn't fight the Pharaoh again, but the thing it said even louder to me was that he missed his friend, and never got to say goodbye.

      Same. I especially loved the little smile Atem gave Kaiba at the very last shot. It's such an impressive contrast to how the AI was programed. While the AI is cocky and mocking Kaiba and make it look like Atem is, secretly, getting tired of dealing with Kaiba's obsession the real Atem is clearly delighted and happy about seeing Kaiba again, offering a warm and honest welcome, showing respect towards the efforts Kaiba made and it's if he wanted to say "I knew you'd find your way to me very soon and never lost faith in it."

    I thought it was great that they only brought back the Pharaoh for a moment, to deal the final Blow (literally, because the Duel was already over, there wasn't and lifepoints taken or anything, it was just him and Mahad kicking butt!), not talking, not anything.
    I also loved the nod to season Zero here! Yes, it was subtle but it was there: I talk about the Eyes of the Pharaoh the moment he appeared and summoned Mahad. • @JMotion
    @JMotion Před 6 lety +1

    I'm a fan of animation, so naturally I feel the strongest attraction to this movie when looking at the quality of the animation, and the duel monster holograms rendered in 3D.
    I gotta say, having the dark magician and blue eyes white dragon be redesigned to closer resemble the original designs that were used in the Toei YuGiOh series is such a great idea. I mean, I can't stress enough how happy it made me to see Blue Eyes White Dragon appear as an actual WHITE dragon, with glowing blue eyes, and not some blue/metalic looking thing. And Dark Magician wearing straight up black robes is such a great contrast to the Blue Eyes. It makes the rivalry between Yugi and Kaiba so much more visually pleasing. Previously it was a blue vs purple, but finally, now it's black vs white. That is probably my favourite thing about this movie's approach to reimagining the old series. Because at the end of the day, while the story is definitely an epologue that takes the original series into account heavily, the artistic style is basically the artists saying "How do we breathe new life into this?"
    Also the animation quality in this movie is straight up gorgeous. They don't sell the bluray in Australia, only the DVD, and I'm actually considering buying a Bluray drive for my PC so I can set it to US region and rip a copy of the Bluray so I can watch it at glorious 1080p. Of course I intend to buy the bluray legally. It's just that it's a case of ripping it on a PC, or importing a cheap bluray player from America. And I think ripping the movie would be a more withstanding way to go about it, rather than risk buying a garbage BD player that breaks on me.
    Anyway, I shouldn't need to say, but I adore this movie. It's one of my favourite pieces of Yugioh now for a number of reasons. It reignited my love for the series, and even got me back into the card game briefly. I have no regrets dropping a bunch of money on a couple booster boxes to get some cards I always wanted. And the movie cards they released are fantastic. I got me at least one of every card from the movie pack, except for Swords of Revealing Light, which I can honestly live without. After all, I'm a Kaiba guy at heart, so I'll just sit back here and count my Blue Eyes, it's all good.

  • @hakairyu1
    @hakairyu1 Před 5 lety +2

    I agree about the duels, but I gotta say; it's astounding that a yugioh movie made us go "enough with the duels, go back to the dialogue already."
