The Guelph to Goderich Rail Trail is a real gem in the crown of Ontario bile trails. It is varied, well shaded, goes through many small villages and is well maintained. For the most part, you would be just fine on 28mm tires. The entire trail is very long, about 140km from end to end. There are many shorter sections that you can ride which makes it ideal for cyclists of all abilities.

I agree with your comments on riding solo. I like meeting up with people at stops but riding by yourself is a mental vacation, plus you get to stop when/where you want, go at your own pace, and explore off route if something looks interesting. Solitary cycling is what i prefer for those reasons.

This trail is top of my list to ride if I ever travel down south with a bike

I just rode Milverton to Goderich the other day following a ride to Milverton from my place, also solo. The entire ride was enjoyable, with the exception being "Hill's Road" which was miserable. I'm hoping to do all of the G2G sometime soon!

The lush growth along that stretch of the G2G is a huge plus, but the trail being an almost straight line for such a distance is a disincentive for me. You certainly enjoyed that, and it was a joy to watch.

Nice to see another Brit riding the G2G trial. I ride (mostly solo) segments of it pretty frequently and enjoy it immensely for all the reason you mentioned.

That looked like a great place to ride. At one time 2 of my sons used to race/ride as well. We'd enjoy a Sunday morning ride with no expectations but just to get some kilometres in our legs. I was pretty fit then so there was no problem with the pace. Fast forward 15 years, the sons are not conveniently close to me and most of my riding is alone. With cardiac issues and a tendency to get some tachycardia I prefer my own pace. Sometimes and ideal riding partner is hard to find.

Solo rider here for all the reasons you mentioned. In my dream scenario, I would socialize with people before a ride and after the ride. but the ride should be solo. Hasn't happened yet but I am hopeful.

Really depends on what you mean by camping. There’s plenty of spots that for sure will have room for a tent.
But there’s always the Blyth Trailway Cabins and other B&B spots along the way.

Is there a part of this trail that’s primarily gravel without road detours bc of bridge work?

It is a 132 KM trail the vast majority of which is rail trail. You can check it out on Ride with GPS or Trail forks.

I am the same, I much prefer a solo ride as pace and breaks are on me. I have done many small group, rides and enjoyed the company and experience but solo for me needs to be the majority.
On a separate note, how is the insta working out? I bought one and my laptop crashes when I try to edit a larger file. Very frustrating!!

The insta is great. I open my clips on the app and edit on my phone. It works fine for the limited type of shots I use, but I don't think it would work so well if I wanted to continually change the perspective of the camera.
