G2G Rail Trail-Guelph to Goderich, why I ride solo
Huge thanks to John and Danielle for the company and the extra footage.
John's Instagram: @teeterboy3
The Guelph to Goderich Rail Trail is a real gem in the crown of Ontario bile trails. It is varied, well shaded, goes through many small villages and is well maintained. For the most part, you would be just fine on 28mm tires. The entire trail is very long, about 140km from end to end. There are many shorter sections that you can ride which makes it ideal for cyclists of all abilities.

Really, Thank you for that update
Great video. This trail has been on my list of must - rides.
That is good to hear. You will really enjoy it.
🇨🇦 it’s a great trail. One of my favourites. I see an accident happening with that post smack dab in the middle of the exit of the tunnel when the sun is bright in your eyes 🫣
I must admit, I had exactly the same thought.
I cycle long distance in a good pair of running shoes (touring not racing). Thin breathable ones for summer, and more solid ones for cooler weather. I have shoe covers for rainy days. Rather than look to the shoe to gain performance, i invested in kona wah wah 2 aluminium pedals. The full size provides a lot of leverage, and the pins give excellent grip. Would never go back to clack clack shoes again.
It sounds like you have found the solution.
I agree with your comments on riding solo. I like meeting up with people at stops but riding by yourself is a mental vacation, plus you get to stop when/where you want, go at your own pace, and explore off route if something looks interesting. Solitary cycling is what i prefer for those reasons.
A mental vacation is such a fantastic way to put it.
I found your channel a couple of days ago... I'm really enjoying your videos. I've derailed from the trail leaving Barrie and headed towards Orillia due to lack of adequate signage (or just chatting too much). BTW old guys like us deserve motel rooms. Keep the great videos coming.
Thank you very much.
Nice to see another Brit riding the G2G trial. I ride (mostly solo) segments of it pretty frequently and enjoy it immensely for all the reason you mentioned.
Its definitely an easy trail to like!!
What a great ride. Love the drone shots. Wondering what brand and model that is.
It is a DJI Mavic Mini. I think it is the most basic DJI available, but I love it.
@@cardiaccyclist7477 Awesome thanks. I have been contemplating on maybe getting one in the future. Glad I ran across your channel as I do many Rail Trails in Ontario, and you covered a lot I have done. And lastly, I started biking more after my pacemaker was put in and I have being doing great ever since. Thanks for sharing your stories and adventures. I am a big fan now
@@Seppster58 Wow, that is so greatly appreciated. I am glad that your health is thriving and that you are enjoying the trails.
I'm a 3D printer and designer and a biker myself. It wouldn't be hard or cost any more to add an outer skin to these, but we have to remember that the more expensive 3D printed saddles are printed using a Nylon Resin, whereas these cheaper ones are printed on a filament printer with TPU filament plastic honeycomb. But it's definitely always worth testing these prints! I know for a fact it would cost more than 34p to print it! The price they charge is to pay for the maintenance of these Carbon model printers that are used in the dental industry more than anything! I am about to Order this saddle to test for myself as got abit of a sore with my new mimic power yesterday
Thank you for some fantastic information and insider knowledge. Good luck with your new saddle.
That looked like a great place to ride. At one time 2 of my sons used to race/ride as well. We'd enjoy a Sunday morning ride with no expectations but just to get some kilometres in our legs. I was pretty fit then so there was no problem with the pace. Fast forward 15 years, the sons are not conveniently close to me and most of my riding is alone. With cardiac issues and a tendency to get some tachycardia I prefer my own pace. Sometimes and ideal riding partner is hard to find.
I am glad you have created a riding situation where you can take care and be mindful of your cardiac issues.
Solo rider here for all the reasons you mentioned. In my dream scenario, I would socialize with people before a ride and after the ride. but the ride should be solo. Hasn't happened yet but I am hopeful.
A good balance is key Thomas!!
I am the same, I much prefer a solo ride as pace and breaks are on me. I have done many small group, rides and enjoyed the company and experience but solo for me needs to be the majority. On a separate note, how is the insta working out? I bought one and my laptop crashes when I try to edit a larger file. Very frustrating!! Cheers Bob...
The insta is great. I open my clips on the app and edit on my phone. It works fine for the limited type of shots I use, but I don't think it would work so well if I wanted to continually change the perspective of the camera.
@@cardiaccyclist7477 Thanks for that, I'll give that a shot! Cheers Bob...
@@Brackers64 Fantastic. You will enjoy it Bob.
Thanks for sharing your ride on the G2G…will need to get out there sometime soon!
I hope you do, it's a great trail.
Am with you, love the quiet- birds
It is the perfect way to wash the bustle of the city away!!
You take your meetups seriously, getting all dressed up for the occasion. Love the dress shirt. Cheers!!!
HAHA! Absolutely. You have to make an effort 🤣
The lush growth along that stretch of the G2G is a huge plus, but the trail being an almost straight line for such a distance is a disincentive for me. You certainly enjoyed that, and it was a joy to watch.
Thank you.
Another great ride, thanks for taking us along.
Thank you very much and you are welcome.
Was a wonderful ride with you. And that stretch of trail (all bias aside) is my favourite.
It is a beautiful stretch of trail. What a great ride.
I, like you, had no idea about that. Thanks for the video.
It's like me learning about apples on the trail for the first time. I am surprised I had not worked that out either!!
Have you noticed any wear on your bretelle due to the 3D printing format?
I am not sure what bretelle is, but using google translate, the best guess I have is that you are referring to bib shorts. There has been no noticeable wear on my bib shorts.
What is your sit bone width?
My sit bone width is 129mm
Hey I helped build the Guelph to Goderich rail trail. We managed to get the trestle bridge preserved.
Wow that is fantastic. Are you referring to Balls Bridge (BTW I was on the G2G today).
I ride the Georgian Trail quite often (since I live in the area), beautiful... yes... road noise... not so great (in sections).
That's right, it does run right next to the road for large parts of it.
I would suggest volunteering at the races! Great way to stay part of the community you love until you are ready to race again!
Yes indeed. I shall be volunteering at the Eager Beaver Gravel Race in August. See you there.
There seem to be many listings for the Ryet 3D printed saddle on Ali. Is there a specific vendor you recommend or link you can provide. Many listings seem to be incredibly inexpensive for a 3D printed saddle. Thank you.
I believe that they would all be more or less identical and so then it comes to two things; price and who has a decent return policy. Price is an easy one to work out but as for returns, if you have a quick scroll through the comments, there is one where the commentor says what a great returns experience they had. Ask them, specifically which one they purchased.
@@cardiaccyclist7477Very helpful and sincerely appreciated. Enjoy the journey and stay safe.
There are a few different saddle designs from ryet and also a carbon and a plastic version (the Zeus he had is also available from Ryet, I got that for around 25€). Carbon is more expensive
Sad that I haven’t cycled any of these. Must make s point to try. Really want to do the Brantford to Port Dover one.
You should, that is a beautiful trail.
When I went from friction type shifters on downtube to indexed gears many years ago I wondering about this. As if reading my mind, the guy at the bike shop explained it to me but he called it “feathering” which is quite descriptive.
I agree, feathering is the perfect term for it.
2 months ago, I watched a similar review of a 3d printed saddle on aliexpress by the yt channel "everything's been done" who praised that saddle model similarly as you did with this one. So I obviously ordered it, but the second i sat down on my bike it was incredibly hurtful. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the edge around the middle cutout was raised about 1mm on the saddle I recieved, and that edge was stone hard unlike the rest of the material and cut into my bones. So it seems at least some aliexpress sellers might have multiple production lines with massivly varying quality and just aren't as reliable as official brands. I have to say though the return worked perfeclty although I even scratched the saddle, which made this aliexpress experience way less frustrating.
I am glad that the return worked out for you. I can totally believe that consistency across all products is not assured so it is just as well that they make it easy to return.
As a fellow cardiac Cyclist, who has done the Oville to Shelbourne quite a few times, you turned around before the worst of that trail, the part directly connecting to Orangeville. Its awful right at town, and slowly improves as you go north, until finally you reach about the point where you turned around and its fine from there. I wont ride that trail out of Oville anymore on anything less than a Fat tire e-bike since my heart issue. Really, the 2km at town is two tire ruts with 1-3 inch rocks..
The town has recently paved it from Blind Line to Veterans Way and from there Northbound it’s crushed gravel similar to Shelburne area until you get to the next line over (2nd Line). That’s where things go from ok to crap as seen at the start of this video. I was out for a run a few weeks ago and ran this section but turned around at the caution tape and went back to my car parked on Veterans Way.
Is the battery of Garmin Edge 830 replaceable? If so, then from where should I buy the battery, what should be the specification of the replacement battery and how do I replace the existing battery ?
It is the same process as it is for the 820. Watch this video: czcams.com/video/Moy6K4h7AIM/video.html
Hi Andrew. Thanks so much for your video. It's very well done! I'm in the Haliburton area and it was nice to see Haliburton Rail Trail mentioned. You did say you could see snowmobiles and that is incorrect. The snowmobile association has complete control of the trail from December thru March and no other traffic is allowed during that period. Also you failed to continue down to Kinmount where the Victoria County Rail Trail takes over and continues all the way south to Lindsay with a slight jog around the town of Fenelon Falls. An absolutely gorgeous trail that is almost all packed limestone. Give it a try! Kinmount to Fenelon Falls is 30 kilometers one way. Thanks again for all these suggestions.
Great comment, you really brought a smile to my face and gave me a good chuckle. I did not say I could see snow mobiles. I said it is a multi use trail with pedestrians and cyclists sharing it with ATV's and Snow mobiles.... all of them are allowed to use it, although not necessarily at the same time of year. On this occasion, I stopped exactly where I intended to. I have also enjoyed the Victoria trail around Fenelon Falls and north towards Kinmount as well as many many other trails. I have made films of all of my favourites.
Is there places on the way to thornberry . Like swimming and beaches? Would love to go there and for a dip as well!
Actually I am not sure. I was not really looking out for that. I am sure there must be places. Maybe local tourist information could help you.
Try out Montreal to Ottawa
Give it 5 years and the front derailler will be gone. 1x all the way.
I don't have a lot of 1X experience, I just have it on my mountain bike, but it would certainly make life much easier.
Didn't know it was called trimming but I use that all the time to make small adjustments on my front derailleur with Shimano 11sp Ultegra.
I am glad you get good use from it.
great video...we'll be up there in late July...quick question though...why is the map printed upside down?...Georgian Bay should be on top with the land portion on the bottom...looks silly this way...
Well I can't really answer for the people who made the map, but when you are standing in front of it, with the lake just behind you, it makes more sense.
Thanks for the reference for Red Panda, and btw I love the sunglasses !
Thank you!! I am a big fan of them too.
Never heard of "trimming" on a bike, but then I have a 1x drivetrain.
I had not heard either. That's why I thought it was worth sharing.
I have 1X on my Mountain Bike, and I must say, I am a bit of a fan.
If you are coming any further into Eastern Ontario, you need to let us know. We have some paths/trails for you, and might even be able to put you up.
Hi Cameron. I absolutely will. I am still hoping to do a few more trails down east.
The Bullocks, I think that's their name, haha, they're nice! I know a couple of guys who bought them to test from eBay and loved them. They're the same as the Specialized design and actually have different infills in different parts of the honeycomb! They're £96, but I ordered one myself to test out for £155.
Hey there Andrew. Thanks again for another video I so want to do this trail as I heard of it this winter. Cheers 🍻

That looks like a great trail. It was good to have someone around to give you a bit of support too. I've got tubed tyres but I use Slime. Works well for small leaks and punctures.
It is a great trail Jeff. In the end, I confirmed that it was not actually a puncture.
@@cardiaccyclist7477 Ah. I thought there was some sort of leak because you were losing pressure.
@@jeffturner8927 I run with them at a really low PSI, and on this trail I started to feel the surface through the front tire, more than usual.
