    Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
    Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on CZcams. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
    Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

    Interrupting is a sign of love. I've been trying to tell my husband this for 22 years. I'm not trying to interrupt him out of rudeness but I'm engaging in the conversation and I'm excited to chat and be near him. He just gets mad. sigh. You two are the absolute best!

    • @ElaMongrella
      @ElaMongrella Před 2 lety +14

      Yes, there is a difference between partners interrupting each other to add to each other's sentences, and rude people who interrupt during an argument or - what happens to me often - when you're talking to person A, and think they are listening, and then person B comes, and they start talking to each other, right in the middle of my sentence. That makes me feel like person A wasn't interested at all in what I was saying.
      But when partners do it to finish each other's sentences or add to them, that's different, because it shows they are interested.

      @@ElaMongrella I've also recently been diagnosed with ADHD-PI. It seems it's something that's been misdiagnosed for 40 years and while I have tried to control it, I do sometimes inadvertently butt into conversations. Instead of helping me find an answer for why I do it, I get berated and yelled at about how rude I am. Sometimes it's not intentional. Sometimes it's because a person has something in their brain that, important or not, the mind feels like it has to push out of the mouth before we forget. So we either 1)are rude butting in or 2)when we wait and try to remember what it was we wanted to contribute we look like we didn't care about the conversation enough to follow it. We are damned if we do and damned if we don't. I'm sorry if people have butted into your conversations, truly I am, I'm just offering an alternate potential scenario.

      @@ElaMongrella Person A was not invested in you or your side of what was supposed to be a conversation. I have had the same happen to me many times and when it would happen, since A and the third party were so engaged in their convo, I would just walk away ..... just turn and walk away. When A would confront me later for being "rude" by leaving and insist on knowing why I did so, I would simply tell them to think about the situation ...... and then walk away again. Sadly, most times A would never figure it out, much to their misfortune in not learning the negative effect their behavior had on such a situation. But, I figured, I had raised one child to adulthood and it was not my responsibility to retrain a grown ass adult in acceptable social behavior.

      @@SpamMom I got a late autism diagnosis, and yes, sometimes I feel like I need to interrupt, when I have something to say, pertaining to a topic, because I have a hard time picking up on cues, when it's my turn to talk, and if I sit and wait, suddenly the topic has changed 3 times, and when I can finally talk, I have to say "going back 3 topics," and everyone looks at me funny.

      Sure, Shane has his limitations, as do we all, some are just more obvious than others, but refraining from focusing on those differences is by no means "traitorous", it is merely an appreciation for the uniqueness and talents that every individual brings to the table...
      Shane's physical limitations are between him and his doctor, and in no way reflect upon his value as an individual... focusing on the differences of others is more a reflection of the observers character than that of the one being observed...

    I am grateful for the explanation and the kind, gentle way you always tell your audience things about your disease and relationship. Anyone who says ridiculous things about your videos and relationship are jealous, plain and simple. I guess I don't scroll through the comments enough to see those awful things said. I see a ton of supportive, loving people here. You deserve those folks, not the others. Ignore them, don't feed into their negativity.

      @@donnahocutt395 I was so young. I was only told by my mom, that any boy I had would have it. I remember all the testing, the NEEDLES!! But, I didn't fully understand it all. I know as an adult, and after seeing all the ones in our family with it, that I don't believe that to be true now. My sister was adopted out at 3 weeks old to extended family. My parents didn't know at that time, that my brothers were going to have it, nor that she was a carrier. She had 5 children, three of them were boys (all approx. one year apart). The two oldest had it, the youngest did not. I had two aunts that had the same mom, as my mom, but different father. One had a son with it, the other had 3 boys - none had it. Another aunt (both same parents as mom), she had 3 boys. One had it, the other 2 did not.

I started coughing within an hour, had shortness of breath, chest pain, hard time talking.
