  • Sara Davis Buechner, classical concert pianist and baseball fan, resurrects the long-lost theme song of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team (1884 - 1957), and also plays her original Chopinesque variation upon its melody. Dedicated to Dodgers announcer Vin Scully, and with thanks to Los Angeles Dodgers team historian Mark Langill.

For Brooklyn Dodgers fans of the 1950's this was the greatest baseball song ever. The song belonged to Brooklyn, and included lyrics in one verse referring to "a baseball team in Brooklyn, a team they call Dem Bums ..." Upon moving to L.A., Dodgers' owner Walter O'Malley wanted to sever the association of his team from the image of bums. The song never made the trip west. Neither did Gladys Gooding, Happy Felton, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella or most of the 3 million Brooklyn fans who were abandoned in the name of greed. In October, 1957, when the move was officially announced, whatever innocence still in existence in association with baseball was lost forever. "America's pastime" was replaced by big business, but nothing could ever dim the emotions aroused by memories of Gladys accompanying herself on the Ebbets Field organ when the Dodgers took the field, and when each game ended.

I'm a lifelong Dodgers fan who only found out about this song upon visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown last year. Thanks for the renditions. As a musician and songwriter myself, I'd be interested in doing my own version of this, and updating some of the lyrics with Los Angeles references. Thanks!

This is fantastic and the 2 people who gave it a thumbs down are monsters.

Worse than monsters, they are probably either Giants or Yankees fans.

I do recall that tune played at Ebbets Field every game when the Dodgers took the field in the mid-1950s era. I think they still used it after the team moved to LA, but only for a year or so.
Sara Davis Beuchner has her baseball history a bit confused. The list of players she mentioned were prominent in the 1950s although a few began their careers in the late 1940s. They were all much too young to have played in the 1930s.

Poor Chopin. He became a Brooklyn Dodgers fan and got his heart broken when they moved to L.A. well at least he can get a job in Hollywood!
