Yeah sure he partly does it to either get on Houses's or since he know going against House is unproductive, but it also feels like he does it because he is interested in the puzzle - in a way signposting his later transition to being the one on the team that takes most after House in the end.

    This episode perfectly shows what I love about House. This seemingly pious guy shows up and wows everyone (as people in life often do) he seems to believe in how selfless he is. House wants to call him out because he is disgusted by the fact that people can't see through his actions which are actually more selfish then they seem.
    He knew the whole time it wasn't TB. All the information he needed was when he realised that he had absolutely no symptoms beforehand. And suddenly was awash with many others. He humored the man by allowing for tests which would help provide evidence for his theory and then bet on clinic hours when he was certain.
    House was more interested in talking about why it is that everyone wanted to believe that he had TB so badly. What makes him logical isn't that he used the person's personality to figure out the illness but rather that he figured it out despite the personality which he wasn't fooled by. Everyone wanted to believe he had TB because of his work but house not only saw what was wrong with thinking that way, he showed that the man had the exact ego problem that everyone thought house had.
    This reflects real life too as it is often the ones who challenge a popular opinion who are treated as if they are self centered, egotistical people. This man works in Africa saving lives so no one expects him to have such a big opinion of himself that he could die from a self misdiagnosis. Especially one that he gives so often.
    House shows us all the time that the ways of thinking that we naturally trust and rely on are objectively dangerous and wrong. It might make you more comfortable to believe that the man saving the poor children is a perfect human being but the truth is nobody is. And doing something like that doesn't automatically make you a certain kind of person either.

      That's indeed the message of the episode. Good analysis. however, unfortunately, these are really toxic ideas. Doctors who volunteer abroad are, in fact, most of the time, very empathetic people who really do care and sacrifice a big part of their lives to do something objectively good. They're also rarely if ever supported by corporate "backers". Yes all of these millionaire doctors in Africa they're definitely real.
      When you consider the reality the show is portraying, the whole episode seems like such a bizarre fantasy.

    As a person who does nice things from time to time…I do it for selfish reasons. I definitely wouldn’t help others if I felt it would be unappreciated. Sincere gratitude makes me want to help more people, ungrateful people make me hate the energy and resources I’ve wasted. This is insanely accurate of House, at least in my situation. I don’t help others just to help, I would like to be thanked for my efforts as well. Within reason of course, but something. I want to be thanked for my hard work, and maybe one day when someone is suffering and you have the ability, you will help them to pay back the debt. In that, I can live on for a moment longer.
    Except for philosophically, I see no problem with that. It’s those that lie and call themselves selfless that anger me to no end.

    • @ralphralpherson9441
      @ralphralpherson9441 Před rokem +1

      Yeah, but at least you have the URGE to be nice. Some people literally do not give a F--- about others. I may enjoy a sense of satisfaction when I hold a door for an old lady, or help someone carry something heavy, but I am also just acting in a way I would hope others would act if they saw me in the same situation. Again, it's not selfless, but I am also not convinced you do nice things PURELY for gratification. Most people also have a general sense of altruism because they enjoy fairness and a world where people care for one another. If that is selfish, then so be it.
      I am TRULY moved to pity when I see a beggar with a cup out for money. Just because I enjoy the feeling of dropping a $5 bill into his cup doesn't mean I did it for 100% selfish reasons.

    House is super perceptive and is humbling the guy for the guys own benefit. The guys false ego has grow to such an extent that he is being bought off and compromising his deeper self. House is helping him come back down to earth to be a better Dr internally again, which will affect his performance later. House has integrity and is keen to spot it being sold out and compromised in his younger colleagues, and exposes it for their benefit and ultimately all the people you are trying to help. Otherwise you become a dancing dog in the hands of pharmaceutical companies and politicians and their agendas and can't see the whole picture clearly. So kudos to House. 'Walking the dog' is possible if the knot is looped around Yo-Yo, not directly tied to it.

    I always liked this side of House (maybe the only side of House.) He pushes stresses to the limit. I know that when I go in to the hospital its because I cant take whats happening anymore, so I have put up with it for so long that I do not notice what "normal parameters" would even be. When docs or nurses ask about pain and I say no more than usual. They say well, no pain is the usual. Makes you think a bit different. Maybe I need a higher stress test.
