The Mirror-like Nature of the Mind - Lama Yeshe

In this excerpt from Lama Yeshe's teachings on the practice of Thousand-arm Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, Lama answers and explores a question from a student about how to discern and meditate upon the mirror-like nature of the mind. These teachings were given at Grizzly Lodge in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains north of Lake Tahoe in 1980.

His books, audible books and full teachings his students posted to CZcams are wonderful. Introduction To Tantra (pieces and parts are more than an introduction) is worth every penny, if you’ve not read or listened to it I recommend giving it some time.

I feel so fortunate to be here at a time when his students have been posting his teachings, and also to have a relationship with another Gelugpa teacher in Domo Geshe Rinpoche. I have learned so much from both of these gurus, and have met (mostly online) students of both Lama Yeshe and Chogyam Trungpa, and it has deepened my appreciation for having a direct relationship with a Tibetan guru making substantial efforts to help western students.

Losar Tashi Delek !
... The root is unsteady, and the boatmen unskilful.
The cart got stuck in the sand, but the destination still afar. One who bonds, also need to separate.
What the caterpillar considers death, the wise call butterfly.
You might read the name of God over and over, You might store holy scripture in memory,
This will not unveil.
Instead, your learning and scholarship, might just sharpen greed for worldly things.
None of the countless books you read, can destroy brutal ego.
Indeed, none but the Saints can kill this inner thief, For it ravages the very house in which it lives.
The gardener may pour a hundred pots (of water), only during the right season fruit appears.
Therefore embrace the only reality,
The seedling is nourished down to its core !
When the buds of mystery unfolded Into the blossoms of revelation,
The entire being is filled with it's Fragrance. May the perfect One who plants in the heart, Be ever blessed.
My guru gave me the eternal drink,
I wander in drunken ecstasy.
Seek the timeless land(s), my friends !
