Fixing our Leaking Sinking Hydraulic Landing Gear on our Fifthwheel in a Walmart parking lot!

  • In this video we repair our hydraulic landing gear on our 2005 DRV mobile suites fifth wheel. Our legs started to drop the front of our RV down so we rebuilt the hydraulic rams.
Kyle and Olivia of drivin and Vibin are great, check them out here - / @drivinandvibin

We were going to take our RV to Roberts Quality RV in indiana to do this repair www.robertsqualityrv.com/ but decide to tackle it ourselves instead.
The first thing we needed was a way to get the hydraulic rams out. We decided to use a storm drain we found in a walmart parking lot. We disassembled the hydraulic lines and dropped the legs out into the storm drain using ropes to keep them from falling in. After we got them out we took them to a hydraulic shop to rebuild the rams. 2 days later we got them back and reversed the whole process.
Thank you for watching our videos!

I am always amazed about how some RVers are clueless about their rigs, BUT you all are way over on the other side of being able to modify and repair your rig. Congratulations!

What, no pin or latch to lock the gear in place when fully retracted? That's surprising. Glad your rig wasn't damaged when the leg contacted the road before your repair.
The RV community is awesome. Drivin' and Vibin' exemplify the ethos of helping where possible.
On your repair, firstly, well done! Aside from the channel locks to tighten the hose fitting, y'all did an amazing job. Necessity really is the mother of creativity. You really proved that with this repair.
As far as the jerkiness of the initial movements it's concerned, air is compressible. Fluid is not. So, what you observed was air being compressed to the point that the force could overcome the friction between the piston seal and the cylinder. Opening a line and submerging it in hydraulic fluid at atmospheric pressure would've a) made movement a lot easier while b) keeping air out of the system.
All part if the dues paid in owning something. Costly repairs averted. Friendship bonds deepened. Lessons learned and skills developed.
Best of all, you're even better prepared to pay kindness forward the the opportunity presents itself.
Lastly, I'd just like to congratulate you both. Not only is your content some of the best out there in RVing full-time, etc., but it's so great to see how well you work together. You're providing a wonderful example of friendship within the context of love and marriage.
Beyond that, your initiative and willingness to step out of your comfort zone time after time is all too rare. Y'all are amazing, and I'm grateful for you sharing your experiences so freely.

Love your ingenuity of finding a hole using satellite imagery. I wouldn't have thought of that. I might have thought well, I can't lift this trailer, so I'll rent a powered auger and dig a hole, which would have worked, but I really like the solution you came up with. I have a 2004 model that uses the exact same landing gear. Never had a problem with it, but we live in it full time and it never moves. It's on a concrete pad. But about 6 months ago, I got to thinking about "Hey, all that's keeping this rv from landing on the ground are those seals inside of those rams". So I went online and purchased four of the large screw/scissor type jacks and ran them up to support the trailer right beside each ram. Now I don't lie awake at night hoping my hydraulics don't let me down unexpectedly.

I was amazed that when the first drop of fluid hit the tarmac that the spillage police did not arrive on site. Parking lot repairs are pretty much frowned upon in the new millinium. This entire operation reminded me of the things we used to do in the 60's and 70's. Most excellent video and gives me hope for the future! Congrats and thanks.

I had one of my hydraulic lines melt against my generator box. Luckily it didn’t bust until i tried to open the slides. It would of been bad if I couldn’t get the slides to close instead.
I ended up going to a hose shop and got a reusable union. I put brake fluid in my hydraulic system. I seen you put trans fluid in yours. I’m going to flush mine out and use the same.
Very good thinking on the drain holes! That shows it pays to be positive and have the desire to solve the problem at hand, instead of getting yourself stuck by just thinking of why you couldn’t get it done.
    We have that in common.
Also, Drivin’ & Vibin’ helping you out?!? That’s great, they are awesome!

I am not sure about your system but yea I think flushing the brake fluid would be a good idea. Brake fluid tends to be more viscous and will aerate in pumped applications. It also might be corrosive to some seals if not designed to for it. I put dot 3 in a mineral based hydraulic system once and it ate the seals and leaked...

Hi guys love your channel! We recently bought our new fifth wheel. Since we are in our early sixties we did our research on the Anderson hitch and decided the weight of the aluminum hitch would be ideal for us. We would really like to have a way of securing the trailer, but we can't find any sort of lock made for the Anderson hitch. Do u have any plans/ideas on how we could secure our trailer when we go out exploring? Right now we are using a heavy chain and padlock on two wheels. I wish there was someway to lock the coupler that's attached to the trailer. Thanks for all your videos!

Hey Steve, good to hear from you! That wasent us in the toyhauler back then but we did start out in one. We switched mainly because it was bigger than we wanted or needed, and the layout of our model did not work for us. I also hated the triple axle as it ate tires. I would consider a smaller 2 axle unit these days. But then would be more weight limited. Sure would like to carry around my patamotor again!

I had same issue on 2013 Drv. Took it out the first time by digging holes. Had a shabby hydraulic shop put seals in and I thought they knew what they were doing.. Not. Put some seals in that fell apart in the fluid after one or two uses under pressure. I’m guessing they put the wrong type which is stupid… Pulled it apart using a sewer drain at a parking lot like they did and it was easier than digging holes… lol. First seals were just turning to mush. Second time I had a real deal expensive hydraulic shop so it and it was great for two trips and maybe 4-5 months of it under pressure but now it’s doing it again. I had them extended pretty far and should have put more blocks up front. Not so slow leak now. About 3 hours and it will go to ground in the front. sigh…. Back to sewer drains in guess.

I liked all the out of the box thinking, but have two things to comment on. The use of channel licks and vice grips to reconnect the hydraulic line fittings made me cringe. The 1 quart oil bottles are designed to not splash, or "gulp air" as you pour if you had flipped the bottle over at 20:07. It also would have given you better control pouring because the bottle would have been under instead of over the spout.

    • @geraldhenrickson7472
      @geraldhenrickson7472 Před 6 lety +1

The "bleeding" of the system is covered in the last few minutes of the video. It sounds as they is no bleed orifice, rather the main fluid reservoir is above the rams and accumilates any errant air in the system. As long as the new seals (square o-rings?) do their job...all air will be evacuated during use. The rams should work better than new and for a heck of a lot longer. Looks like a good system overall. It was a great choice to stick with the original rams.

I have always been told not to just complain about a problem, but come up with a solution. How are you going to raise the front end of the RV up enough to get the hydraulic piston and housing out of its channel. They did say Walmart twice but they also said abandoned factory once. I am not sure which it was but a policeman checking on them was satisfied they there was nothing being dumped into the drain. Short of going to a shop that has a work pit, I am not sure how they were going to get the parts they needed out of there and new ones in. Looked like all of the hydraulic oil stayed in the RV or on Tom. My hat off to Tom for fixing a problem for which there was no easy solution!!
