This is a very interesting series you are doing. Not many people show the process of building their hauptwerk console
Spannend das Projekt mitzuverfolgen. Als jemand der sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch versteht, empfinde ich aber das zweisprachige Konzept als angstrengend zum gucken, da man alles zwei mal hört. Ich erwische mich immer wieder dabei vorweg zu spulen. Vielleich wäre es eine Idee das Video in Kapitel zu unterteilen, sodass bei jedem Sprachenwechsel ein neues Kapitel beginnt. Man könnte dann somit die Parts der anderen Sprache überspringen.
Ich glaube, das lohnt aber auch erst bei Passagen, die Länger als ca 20-30 Sekunden sind, sonst dauert das Vorspulen länger, als das Durchlaufen lassen. Abgesehen davon sollst Du doch soweiso beide Sprachversionen schauen, so sparst Du Zeit, weil Du nur einmal klicken musst ;)

This is the best tutorial ever!! I have a HW organ, however I was fortunate enough to have my HW consultant put it together for me, as I was most definitely incapable of doing this myself. It’s very inspiring to see how “the innards” work!! Thank you!!😊🌺

YAY!!!! YAY!!!! and Thrice Y A Y !!!!!! It looks very much like ALL your followers here are both excited for you and are itching, like me, to hear the final reward from your labours ... all four (OK three will do for now) manuals and pedals producing that glorious of glorious sounds. One can still remember the excitement here when the first connections were made and tested here, and that first moment when a chord is pressed, and a great sound gushes forth is almost like being at the birth of your first-born! Exhilaration in its highest form! Can't wait for the next instalment. So pleased, too, that you are obviously relieved and how uncomplicated the assembly of the guts (electronics) has been. A bench full of ribbon cables and a tangle of cables ..... bliss !!!! Best wishes. T.
Great job, Fraser! It seems to be not that difficult as I thought. I really like the bilingual videos, because beside my native language, German, I speak English as well, so it's also a training for my English :)

Wonderful organ, haven't played it but I have seen it in real life. Hauptwerk version is really good.
So excited for you, and so impressed by you! As Houston once proclaimed: "the Eagle has landed!" It is a sobering thought that you are probably dealing with more computer power than that which took the first men to the moon. And now, Fraser, the organ universe (well, that part accessed via Hauptwerk) is now within reach. You are a 'star', and the organ stars now await your exploration!

Brilliant Fraser! Do be careful not to allow the solder side of those boards to come in to contact with other metal parts while they are powered up!

I’ve really enjoyed having the Friesach organ from Piotr Grabowski’s website. His sample sets sound better to me than most free sample sets. You’re getting to the exciting part of your VPO adventure. Enjoy!

Hi Fraser, you probably won't want to mount the decoder board under the keyboard, as you will find that when you fit the keyboards together (stack them up) the pcb will probably foul whatever is under it. I am pretty sure that when you put the keyboards into some kind of console, the ribbon cables will allow the scan boards to be mounted behind the keyboards somehow. Obviously I can't see what you can, but I don't want to see you chopping bits out of your keyboards unnecessarily.
If you are a real Brit then I can compliment you on your great German speech, as a Dutch person I know how difficult it is to speak German or even Dutch as an Englishman and good too!!!
As a Dutchman I once had to explain to an American mother and daughter the care that the German saleswoman told me at a garden center (where I had just unloaded plants) in Munich as a Dutchman and I was then allowed to translate that from German into English again. and then I am a Dutchman who by chance has a reasonable to good command of both languages, it worked and they even invited me to have a cup of coffee with them, which I did of course.

There used to be a school of thought that warned about potential static damage when handling electronic components - I don't know if that is still relevant or maybe modern components are more resilient.
I use this sampleset. It's awesome
I am looking forward to seeing what you will have to do to connect the pedals. Are they already a MIDI device, or is it just from an organ console? The Ginobus makes your wiring very straight forward, it is a nice simple solution. The only thing I find strange is that there is no USB connection on the MIDI interface. These days you can often connect all your MIDI devices together without needing an actual MIDI cable. Cheers.
Sieht schon mal gut aus! Der Herr Goes hat gute Teile geliefert, sieht auch von Aufbau sehr einfach aus. In meinem Hammond A-100 sind ähnliche Teile verbaut, etwas älter und ohne Netzteil, ich soll da wirklich mal ein Netzteil anschliessen und mal schauen ob es noch funktioniert ;-). Und natürlich ohne dass das Nebengeräusche auf die Hammondsound gibt...
Viel Erfolg auch mit das Gehäuse, aber das kommt schon gut denke ich wenn du jemanden kennt die sich damit auskennt. Ich kenne da auch die nötige Leute, selber bin ich da aber komplett ungeschickt, ich kann noch kein Brett in 2 Stücke sägen... Bin gespannt, freue mich schon auf das nächste Video!

When you consider how old MIDI technology is, sort of gives you confidence that all will work!! My first use was in about 1988 when I connected a keyboard to an Akai sampler using MIDI...what a revelation!!
The success story of MIDI: a) simple protocol for basic functionality, b) extensible without limits.
Welcome to the life of a technician.. Fortunately for you, the tech has changed to the point where assembly is far less complicated than the old "analogue" days!
I, in fact, actually "cut my teeth" on _vacuum tube_ (valve) electronic organs. Ah, those were the days... of heat, high voltage and much frustration!

Very small correction-the 4 boards you referred to as Decoders are actually probably Midi *encoders* . Decoders help your computer send MIDI information to your hardware (useful for lifted stop tabs), while an encoder allows your hardware to send MIDI information to your computer. Forgive my pedanticism!
I think the error comes from the producer of the boards, because he calls them "decoder" on his website. So Frazer just says what he got told.
What could also be is that it's called decoder because they decode the signal of the keyboard's diode matrix.

I use a baldwin d422 console to run mine. It was completely plug and play
Off to a great start! Will you be building a console out of wood or is it pre-made? Also, when will you get the pedalboard, it was conspicuously absent from your unboxing, and you haven't mentioned it much. Anyway, enjoying the construction videos so far, it's a nice complement to your wonderful playing and informational pieces!

editing time and doing the whole video twice wouldn't be possible given it is a building project, not simply performance on the instrument.
Maybe the easier way would be relevant language subtitles but I suppose a little impersonal - so repeating the commentary in both languages is the better way
@@andrewmurray1550 Some of FG's early videos have a voiceover in English overdubbing the German parts, I wouldn't mind that.

I would suggest trying out the Azzio organ. It's free and an absolutely lovely baroque organ!
Grand Orgue of Lars Palo works the same as Hauptwerk and you can load both organs simultaneously to create a Virtual Symphonic organ. Hence both are licensed under Milan digital audio.
Test with both Hauptwerk ST Annes Mosely and the Free Grand Orgue of Lars Palo. The reason why is that sometimes you'll get a conflict on Hauptwerk between the different midi "sets"... Pedal, Great and Swells controllers. Using the GO software it shows the fault on screen whereas with HW you have to work through the 700 page manual. Having said this, you have a different software to find conflicts and faults. I would from the beginning build the registers (stops) as physical knobs as midi triggers. Far easier to play than with touch screens.

Now all you need is for all the organs in the world to be linked to Midi as well.
You could log in via the net and work from home.
Although being in the presence of an organ and its stacks of pipes belting out Bach is a far better experience
Congrats for entering into the Hauptwerk console-Builders world ;) of course you have guessed right: plugging is the easy part. Getting everything up and running nicely in a nice framework is a bit more time consuming. Be happy that you are starting knowing already what you want to and with all the parts ready. My console was a 5 year development and is still not “perfect” in the details... but I worked all out step by step as will you now.. interesting to see your progress. Have fun!

the connectors between keyboard and ribbon cable are called micro-match
Flat ribbon cables make my skin crawl as they are susceptible to noise induction. There may be aftermarket round twisted pair cable equivalents to avoid the potential problem. E.g. look for round IDE cables as an example. Round cables are much easier to route.

Wenn Du mit unter Spannung stehenden Platinen probierst dann bitte wenigstens ein Blatt Papier als Isolator drunter legen bevor Du diese auf oder in die Nähe von den Metallteilen des Manuals legst ! Die Gefahr auf einen Kurzschluss ist einfach zu groß und würde der Platine sicher nicht gut tun ! Wahrscheinlich sogar unbrauchbar machen ! Liebe Grüße Martin

Hast du die Erweiterung deines PC mit genügend RAM eingeplant? Meine eigentlich angedachten üppigen 16 GB Arbeitsspeicher haben bei weitem nicht ausgereicht, um die Soundsets einigermaßen laden zu können. Mittlerweile habe ich 32 GB Arbeitsspeicher, was für die einfachen Sets geradeso funktioniert.
Außerdem noch eine alte Weisheit: "80% der Arbeit lassen sich in 20% der Zeit erledigen". Die Keyboards anschließen, damit habe ich nicht wirklich mit einem Problem gerechnet. Später die Stops und die Pits werden dir noch Kopfzerbrechen bereiten, die MIDI-fizierung des Pedals ist da noch das kleinere Übel. Nimm da wirklich bitte fachkundige Hilfe an.

Hi Fraser. Ich bin Joel und ich komme aus Herten. Ich würde alles tun um dir für das Hauptwerk Projekt ein Gestell für die "Orgelteile" zu bauen das das so aussieht als hättest du eine Orgel bei dir stehen. Ich bin 15 Jahre jung und wegen corona beschäftige ich mich in jeder freien Minute mit Projekten. Wir können das Gestell planen und ich lasse mich auf deine Wünsche ein.Ich weiß du denkst dir vielleicht"Bor das kann ja nur mit einer Katastrophe enden" aber ich hab bei mir nebenan eine eisdiele und da hab ich eine Wand und eine neue Theke gebaut und das sieht Super aus. Ich würde mich mega über eine Rückmeldung freuen und das ich dir bei dem Projekt helfen darf. MFG Joel aus Herten
Sehr interessant. Einsprachig wäre das Video allerdings etwas flüssiger.
Ich denke, er wird in Zukunft die Videos auch wieder einsprachig machen, aber solche Sachen, wie Zusammenbau willst Du einfach nicht zwei mal machen, nur um einsprachige Videos produzieren zu können. Und so schlimm ist das ja nun auch wieder nicht. Nimm es einfach als Gelegenheit, ein Gefühl für die andere Sprache zu bekommen ;)

When you are up an running check out the sample sets from Piotr Grabowski (piotrgrabowski.pl/instruments/) he has some very well sampled organs and most are free. A favourite is the organ at St. Bartholomäus church in Friesach, Austria :-)
