- The Presidential Traverse in the White Mountains of New Hampshire is one of the most daunting hikes in New England. The length is moderate, the elevation gain strenuous and the weather can be extreme. In fact, the Mount Washington and the Presidentials are known for having the worst weather on earth.
The Presidential Traverse is listed in the Top 10 Hardest Hikes in the U.S. due to the insane elevation gain over short distances, the extremely rugged terrain and the fierce weather. Ice storms have occurred in the middle of summer.

This was super informative to hear as an amateur outdoorsman in the north east area! The audio was fine enough for me to make out most of what was being said too!
One of my favorite day hikes. Last time I did it it was a beautiful day so even though I was "solo", I hiked it with a couple thousand of my new best friends. I accidentally started out with 5 guys about 25 years old. They blasted ahead, but I passed them 10 minutes later as they caught their breath and delayered. Then then blasted ahead, but I passed them 20 minutes later as they caught their breath. And so it went until Madison. As I had a snack they finally got ahead of me for good. But I kept making trail friends and we would hike for a bit together then someone would move ahead. Then about Monroe I ran into my guys again, as they were slowing down and we hiked and chatted until the last Presidential, Pierce, peak 7. They were bushed (lesson here on pacing), and headed down to the Highland Center. I looked at my watch and realized if I just busted out a 5 mile mountain jog I could get in a bonus peak 8, Mt Jackson (named after an old time geologist not the President), and still get finished in time to meet my wife and kids for dinner. And so I did.
It was a fine 60th birthday.
Love hearing stories like that! You would have eaten us for lunch with a pace like that! But we wanted to take two days and savor it. Thanks for sharing! Jackson was like the cherry on top being able to look back at the Presidentials behind us.
