Denzel is sooooo good in this film. It was his most understated role since Mississippi Masala and I loved how he gave Derek Luke the room to be the lead. That shows the lack of ego from one of the absolute best to ever do it. Phenomenal film.
I was there when they were filming this scene. An extra who didn't actually make it into the scene but was walking nearby. It was fun for a duty day. I met the real Antwone Fisher at the Navy Exchange the next day.
Had all those things done to me and worse multiple foster home abuses, alcoholic father abuse, picked on in school for being a different race, abused by teachers, counselors, the whole system but in the end I looked for healing and found a path for me. I am happy to say I am a productive member of society not perfect far from it but I won't be stuck in the same cycle as the abusers. I beat the whole damn system that tried to hurt and harm me as a child. I can definitely relate to this scene on so many levels. Redemption.

When I watched this scene my brother sitting next to me said that those two soldiers were real soldier's and he said that's what real soldier's look like. I couldn't help but put a stupid huge smile on my face. This ending was great guys. It. Was. Great.
