@ok! Deadpoppin rookie numbers
Most battles of the Clone Wars were much larger than what they appear to be in the show, with hundreds of thousands of battles that happening simultaneously with each other. Entire Clone Legions were wipe out or cut off during some battles, and Umbara was microcosm of just a single battle of the Clone Wars.
Yea there were multiple fronts on every planet. It's cool to hear brief mentions of the battles happening during the show. Like in Season 1, were Mace was told that Obi won his battle in the southern Desert which won them that part of Ryloth. Or in season 7 where they mentioned that the droids on all fronts were destroyed.
That's an issue with using 3d animation instead of 2d; 2d would allow the show to depict the scope of a galactic spanning war on a grander scale. That is to say I'm not critiquing the animators nor am I denying the advantages of 3d to 2d animation.
@@pepperedash4424 yeah, like the 2003 animation for example, idk why they made it 3d for some reason
And its one thing to watch these battles happen in the show but its another thing to actually live through them and watch the soldiers that fight along side and befriend you too.
Galactic-spanning wars are much different and harder to comprehend than most conventional wars
I wonder how Anakin reacted when he heard how the 501st was treated and if he did anything to stop dogma from being punished.
I'd say he was shocked on how his men were treated and not just from the testimonies of rex and the others. Combined with the reports along with some form of holo footage throughout the invasion of Umbara. At least that's how I think it
I wonder how Obi Wan reacted. I assume that Krell told obi wan that there is an ambush by umbarens in clone armor and didnt order the unit directly. So in the end, Obi Wan made the call to send Waxer and his unit.
I want so see a fight with him angry and flooded with emotions face off against krell a dark side and light side force user. that would have been amazing
@@anakinstoppanickin krell would be already dead at that point
@@1j9hd97

My favourite bit in the Umbara episodes is when the AT-RTs are looking during the beginning. Then a ton more show up and it's just the exact same voice going "Yeah!" "Alright!" "Let's go!"
Itâs clear he might have been a bit lazy when doing their voices
@@tsmotions3446 Well, they all have the exact same voice, and they're background characters, so it makes sense.
They might even have the same voice actor!
@@geetslys I didn't think such a thing could even be possible!
@@lumethecrow no thereâs no way one person could voice thousands upon thousands of clones. No he must just have a trillions of twins that sound just like him. Heâs probably a rabbit otherwise he wouldnât have that many brothers
This battle also shows how elite the 501st are they are winning some of the hardest battles throughout the war with comparatively little casualties
no,it shows how much the 501 have plot armor
It shows how good of a general Anakin was because when he was commanding them they took little casualties, but when krell was commanding they took high casualties. The only reason they survived was because plot armor.
@@battledroidcommander234 I mean not really sure hey routinely suffer pretty heavy casualties in the clone wars movie they lose the entire company but like 3 guys
@@AlbinoKneecaps but when krell was in command they accomplished their goal even though their general was setting them up to fail and then captured him, and while maybe red has plot armor the fact that he is the only named 501st trooper to really survive the war kinda suggests to me they donât have plot armor to a crazy high degree
But itâs a story everyone has plot armor until they dont
Not true even when Anakin command 501st. They have been taken one of biggest consulates in battles of grand army of the republic. But they always fight at hardest battles. The difference was that Anakin always fight at first line. So soldiers didnât feel like he was sending them for dead. Because he always lead them in first line. Thatâs whatâs Rex sad to clones when they complain at Krell tactics.
Pong Krell thought him getting all his clones killed would impress Dooku and make them allies, but I'm pretty sure Dooku wouldve just been like "wow this jedi sucks at strategy lol noob". I don't get why he didn't ask Dooku first. Stupid four armed bullfrog.
_edit though to thought_
Obviously he would tell him those casualties were him. I'm fairly sure his plan was to sabotage the republic assault on Umbara to failure then join Dooku afterwards. By pitting the clones against one another he was likely hoping one legion would wipe out the other, and given how both sets of forces were so important, the attack would inevitably fail.
Dooku had honour he would probably be shocked by Krell's actions. He probably would have rejected Krell.
@Sean Austin Krell would have defeated Grievous...they are even in lightsaber count, meaning Grievous' strategy of overwhelming his opponent was now useless. Krell also had the force, and could use that to his advantage against the General.
@@ridiculously You cant simply say that Grievous only advantage is the amount of lightsabers he wields. Grievous entire existance is dedicated to hunting down Jedi, he knows how to fight force-sensitive opponents, and he has far more battle experience than Krell. He had enought time to study all 7 forms of lightsaber combat and can switch between them to counter Krell perfectly. There is no way Grievous would lose a fair duel against that dude.
@@Mediados That honestly depends on multiple things, like which Grievous (2003, 2009, etc.), and whether we consider that Krell is a Jedi General and has probably seen a large number of battles at this point or not.
What I love about Umbara the most is that they fight Native Umbarans. It's a small detail that gets lost within the wider war stories. A lot of bloody battles were fought by local defense forces, flesh and blood individual from both sides. The Clones and the Droids were the tip of the spear of their respective factions
Yes same! Would've loved to see more native seperatist in action
Geetslyâs: Doesnât audio clip what pong krell says when the clones try to arrest him
Me: âIts treason then.â
Yo
I'd have liked to see more episodes where the Clones were stuck fighting against non-droid CIS forces. A lot of the Outer Rim hated how the Republic operated. The Umbarans and Geonosian fought to defend their home worlds. Forcing such military actions was a major part of Sidious's plan to spiritually weaken the Jedi. Only the Talz on Orto Plutonia received the kind of compassion the Jedi were supposed to champion.
The Battle of Jabiim wouldâve made a fantastic early episode.
@@YOOT_JJ v dark though
The Confederacy did nothing wrong
But you gotta remember just speaking on behalf of the republic to be fair the context was different since it was republic space, newly found intelligent species in the lore I presume since that is the context as well. They also took out the separatist base. So they knew at least the guys in white armor were some kind of being so they were curious not moreso xenophobic to a degree
That's not really an appt comparison. The Talz weren't separatists, just tribals defending their land from invaders, and the only reason the conflict escalated was because of the insane greed of the Pantoran leader
Something people forget, is that clone wars was like.. WW2 on thousands of planets at the same time. Thousands of planets with thousands of battle each.
Ww2 super edition
It was primarily a mix of both World Wars, predominantly the first one, as well as the Cold War (namely Vietnam, with Umbara and Jabiim.), and other wars/battles throughout history.
@@AngelDust6969 So essentially, like no war that's ever been fought in human history? Damn
Once you read actually into it and go full on legends star wars you realize just how huge the clone wars was with fighting across millions of worlds with tens of billions of clones, hundreds of trillions of droids(some sources even say that the CIS commanded quintillions of droids) and millions of ships.

Still a painful death
All I'm sayin is the tactics used in the clone wars are pretty archaic. Modern tactics would dictate liberal use of orbital bombardment and more diverse aerospacecraft.
during this battle at least, the fleet was occupied with its own battle, makes sense there wasn't much fire support.
Thatâs because the battles in Star Wars are based more off of WWII, they look archaic because they are. Hence why we see dozens of clones just charge en mass, close-quarters dogfights rather than using guided missiles, and air support that consists of little more than âchuck a few starfighters at themâ.
Tbf, battles were happening EVERYWHERE during planetary invasions like Umbara or Geonosis. Battles all over the planet, and in space, all at the same time
Technology is advanced but stagnant by the time of the republic. It was the empire that built new tech like the Death Star
1) the airfleet was busy doing his own battle, probably already had a lot to focus on already.
2) Shield generator protect most fortified structure in star wars, redenring carpet-bombing strategy pretty much pointless if you are not on an open field
What would be the more horrifying experience, taking part in the Battle of Umbara or fighting in those dark catacombs on Geonosis?
Yes
Yes
like they said, yes.

i wish clone wars had given us more massive battles with huge droid armies against massive clone armies, (sigh) but i guess we have to be satisfied with what we got
I guess Filoni didn't comprehend the scale of the conflict
@@nobleman9393 or maybe he wanted something more similar to Band of Brothers with character focuses.
@@transgirly50 I think we could of gotten more
For most of the battles the clones were wide spread and did not have the troops or vehicles to do such things, as well as the time it would take to move all of the troops it is very unlikely but you are right, one or two battles more large scale should have been shown
Yes. That's why Geonosis and Umbara are my favorite arcs
When i was a kid this arc came out and it made me realize how war always leads to some form of trajedy. no mater how just the cause
God I love full screen clips
lol i watched a whole season of clone wars using your channel when i didnât have disney plus
Always wondered how Anikan felt when hearing how Krell treated the 501st.
Anyone else want to see a casualty report of some of the battles? Umbara, Both battles of Geonosis, and Corusaunt would be my top picks.
I would be very curious about the first Battle of Geonosis. That was an open display of Republic incompetence and an utter waste of troops. They simply threw in what they had and hoped that it would be enough to overwhelm Seperatist forces.
@@Mediados ya that was dumb but they were rushed into action, plus Dooku threw anyway so it worked out
4 generals 3 battalions with, if the numbers are like our military now would be like 500-1000 clones each. This battle was huge. Just the animation budget wasnât. So what we saw was really only the forward platoons of the 501st. And we only saw like 1-2 waves of gunships when in reality there were probably like 6-7 waves.
Well, the numbers of the 501st and the 212th are known, the 501 legion had something around the number of 10,000 clones in the Legion, but since many of its divisions were sent elsewhere the Legion could only field up to 5,000 clones.
The 212th had between 2,000 and 5,000 clones but again with different deployments could only field about half.
Considering the number of the other battalions plus support companies from other units the entire assault force of the umbaran capital is probably near to 20,000 or 30,000 clones. The entire planetary assault force was probably near to the number of 200,000 with the clones in the fleets taken into account as well
@@seagull1326 The 212th was part of the 7th Sky Corps, led by Obi-Wan and Cody. I think a Core has at least 16,000 troopers (maybe I'm wrong).

5:05 I bet what remained of Krell's original forces enjoyed that.
The sheer brutality of clone deaths in the battles on Umbara, the discovery of the clones firing on each other seriously made my heart drop. That shit was enough to make a mans wanna cry.
If geetslyâs were ever a clone captain, commander or officer ik his strategic tactics would be useful in battle
Tbh it's way smaller then I thought, considering the fact it's a galactic scale war with the goal of capturing an entire planet, umbara likely has more people then earth with higher technology, even if the republic brought its entire clone army, they wouldn't amount to 15 million according to Canon lore, let's say that umbara only has 8 billion people which is still too little but it's fine, let's say out of those 8 billion people, only 5% participated in the war, that would still be 400 million soldiers with high tech weapons.
Start wars has always been unrealistic in terms of scale so its not like I was expecting something realistic from this but it would have been cool.
Yeah you're right, the numbers are quite off when you think about it. That being said I had the impression Umbara was very sparsely populated, numbering maybe a population of max 1 million.

It's nice to see a visual representation. The battle itself was so hectic I couldn't tell where they were or in which direction they were moving, but I assume that was the point, to make the viewer feel the confusion and chaos that the troopers felt.
The beginning fake hyped me so much. I hoped to learn something outside of the episode (maybe from books) but nah just a re-heated steak.
Probably not going to get an answer, but what are your sources for most of the stuff in this video? I learned so much new info about the battle even after watching the arc about a dozen times before.
Rest In Peace Waxer, absolutely floored me when he was the fatally injured commanding officer
I really like the editing style of this video
Noted! Thank you!
Honestly, way back when the Umbara arc first aired I thought the big twist was going to be that Krell wasn't a traitor, that he was being completely genuine the whole time.
I would've loved to see more battles between local militias and security forces during the Clone wars. I want to see canon materials that show the real cost of the Clone Wars like we see with the Galactic Civil war.
I always knew the battle was pretty big, but even I didn't get the full details until your video. This one is definitely going on My Favorites.
And if you're looking for other Battles to do, how about The Battle of Mon Cala, also seen in season 4? That was pretty insane with how outnumbered and overwhelmed Republic forces were, they need help from three different spies armies to win that one in the end.
Or maybe The Battle of Dathomir, it would be cool to look at Battles where one fraction was completely absent like on Dathomir or Mandalore.
I guess the battle of Mon cala was underwater and it was harder to fight

The thing with Star Wars is that it's a master of world building, whenever they come up with ideas for stories there is often openings that give potential for new stories to build off of them and different POV's of the same events. For example this video points out that the Battle of Umbara is bigger than what it focuses on in those episodes.

Padme created the Umbaran-Vietnam battle of the Shadow Planet
This battle, alongside the Battle of Jabiim, gives off a mix of World War 1 and Vietnam War influences.
Both battles involve the Republic fighting against Separatist-Aligned natives, suffering heavy losses, and included at least one reference to the Vietnam War. (The Republic lost the Battle of Jabiim, while General Krell's role in the Battle of Umbara was similar to Colonel Kurst from Apocalypse Now, a movie set during the Vietnam War.
Both battles also involved trenches and terrain similar to World War 1 battlefields. (Jabiim was basically a variety of WW1 battlefields whereas Umbara had similarities to both Verdun and the Argonne, as well as other forest battles.)
This was such a good video! More battle reviews please!
