- Project description of the US$1.46 billion second Midtown Tunnel between Norfolk and Portsmouth under the Elizabeth River in Virginia, USA. In total 11 elements weighing up to 16,000 tonne each will be transported by tug 200 miles from dry dock in Baltimore to the jobsite, to form a 44ft wide x 36ft high two-lane immersed tube connection and relieve pressure on the existing concrete lined steel immersed tube that was layed in the 1960s. For full story and pictures see: www.tunneltalk.com/Midtown-Tun...
The whole system of immersed tunneling was invented by us: the Dutch. Here also at least 1 Dutch Company worked on this new tunnel.

What's the expected life expectancy for one of these? What happens if one fails?
Stuff with water
Did they ever build it 😳😲❓
Yeah, its funny how they provided every little detail possible but forgot to inform us of the toll. lol
That tunnel font look too safe. Maybe if it was thicker.
A total nightmare trying to drive an 18 wheeler with all the uneven lanes etc
Wouldn't it be faster and probably cheaper to use a tunnel boring machine?
So much effort just for one road.
Why not go around it or build over it?
