    Sir, Don't you think it is contradictory to say ininfitive is
    not a verb when it act as verb as
    bare infinitive&present participle
    in continuousform when situation demands it( ate and eating asper your above example)
    No doubt the principle function of
    Gerund is to act as noun, past&present participle as
    adjectives. I am glad to record
    here that you have explained
    thoroughly the wafer thin difference from gramatical pont
    of view. It is rather a baffling for
    students to comprehend it.

    Present participle is used after (a, an)
    I found a rolling ball.
    2. It is used with verbs of sense.
    Smell, hear, listen, look, see, watch, notice and observe.
    I saw her eating mangoes.
    3. It is used when two works are going at a time.
    Example:
    4.It is used when two works are happening one after without time gap.
