  • Meryl, a Jewish teacher from New Jersey, is shopping for the perfect dress for her wedding to Viju, her Christian, Indian fiancé. Was it a good idea to bring her mother and sister-in-law along, or will conflicting traditions turn Meryl's bridal fantasy into a clash of cultures?

@@NarYan2904 This is wonderful!!! My family's history has been that when someone gets married that they become part of our family, male or female. We don't give up daughters or sons... Sometimes in the past, a husband's or wife's family could or would not contribute. I got married, my father and mother claimed my husband, they considered him family (This was kind of a shocker for many people at our ceremony!) and then his parents equally claimed both of us as theirs as well. So, it was nice to have have both of our families, while we were navigating life.

    North - mostly red lehengas
South- typically sarees that too silk saree... atleast we tamilians who are non Christians will never wear white on the wedding day since it's only worn by widows..
While Christians do wear more pastels and white but they too mostly wear a saree (silk) or wear gowns these days.

Christian brides wear lehenga/saree/ or whatever to the engagement ceremony, but not for the wedding ceremony itself, brides traditionally wear cream/white saree or a white (western) wedding dress. Also, the Christian bridal reception outfit is a saree as well.

She would end up offending tons of people. I'm assuming non-Indians know white and black are not part of the zillion colors we can wear. Red is the traditional color for most part. These are damn common things to Google when you're planning for a cross cultural wedding. She said she pursued the guy and was very excited for an Indian wedding. Black is tormenting and scandalous to say the least. Even if there's a single design of black color, the bride can't wear it the whole first year, as per our tradition.

People are quick to enter interracial relationships but don't stop to think of the cultural ramifications. A good compromise is to have ceremonies, one for each culture... and accept that each ceremony will be 100% authentic, even if not to your taste.

      1) Its not your culture, so shhhh. Let us explain, India is huuuuge, with every 5 kms you’re entering a different language, different ethnics. North indians wear lehenga and spend LAVISHLY on their weddings. And I mean like blowing up shit crazy ass weird weddings. But south indians on the other side, like it plain and simple and very down-to-earth environmentally friendlier weddings. We don’t like to spend so much money on our weddings but rather do something more good. Like feeding an entire village, planting trees, just keeping our weddings as cheap as possible but at the same give it back to Earth.
      2) They’re abroad, these are the kinda stuff you get ouside of India. Trend isn’t an essential part of the fashion in Indian wears abroad
      3) The lady was going to get married to SOUTH INDIAN CHRISTIAN guy- who wear very simple sarees that are more silk based and none of that bold good-lord-I-lost-ny-sight blind lehengas.

Its okay, if people are not aware, the mom was there to learn! She probably was just hurt because she feels that wedding is nothing like her culture- because Indian parents do their shit seriously. Personally I felt bad for the mom that her daughter couldn’t get married in her own culture. I hate this about Indian parents- always making it about them.
