10:48 At this point, I can't see anybody definitely vegan in the room. One woman is a possibility for me but we don't get to hear enough from her to be sure. I have to say I would find it hard to not dig deeper and start calling them out lol 😎.
From the animals perspective, I would take plant based for whatever reason but I agree with you that it is annoying to misuse the word vegan and to confuse viewers who have no other input to what veganism truly is.

I’m THE vegan, for animals of course, I love tofu, favourite snack is Oreo and I don’t wear leather - The Mole 10min after googling and crafting their persona would have outshined all of the pretenders 😅
If they had just dropped a holocaust reference too there would have been no doubt that they are vegan of the highest militant rank and simultaneously exposed a room full of triggered plant based people 😂

Yes, they all need calling out, they all just wanted to be on the show, so of course they identify themselves as vegan, and they got there because the producers like them had no clue what veganism is.

It's so sad how being vegan (i.e., for the animals) is actually seen as embarrassing, and that many people instead go plant based for health (i.e., selfish) and environmental reasons.

If a person says they’re Vegan it should be assumed they are Vegan, why want them to explain, if they are just on a plant based diet it will become obvious. 🌻✊🏽🌎

Great video Cip! It evoked many thoughts in my head.
So we talked about 2nd hand leather in the premiere chat, and I said that the rhetoric "would you wear human skin" is not useful if someone would bite the bullet. But I had more thoughts about it - they might bite the bullet on human skin being appropriated after the fact (as creepy and gross as that is, in a vacuum when raising the question of morality - I can't find a reason for why it would be immoral). But would they bite the bullet on breeding humans into captivity with the purpose of selling their flesh and skin for trivial products? I bet they wouldn't (if the y would - back away slowly). So I now think that the rhetoric of commodification is also not as useful as being incredibly precise about it - leather is the product of rights violations, or commodification of a sentient animal who was purposefully bred for it, or exploitation of and cruelty to animals, however you wish to word it.
That's the moral question, the practical question is separate imo, and I think if a claim is made that wearing 2nd hand leather promotes the sale of 1st hand leather somehow - my intuitions say - not while there're only 2% vegans, as 98% non-vegans don't need that to be promoted, it's already a norm. But, as with every empirical claim - I will change my mind if presented with empirics, for now my intuitions go in the other direction. That said - I dispensed all leather I owned before going vegan and not buying 2nd hand leather on the account of it being too nuanced to explain to the general public (and my parents lol) why a vegan would wear the skin of an animal.
Sorry that this is so long, nuance usually is. Just wanted to explain myself without the restriction of 200 characters. There's one more somewhat deep thought that arose in my head - I'll tell you next week on my formal logic lesson, as it directly involves formal logic lol.
Your argument is correct in that it may not make a difference. However, I think that we should strive for what we want from the start. Imagine if we end up with a larger percentage of people being vegan and then we gotta convince them to stop wearing second hand leather. 🤔 then again, if they become vegan, they may understand the issue faster.
I just find it easier to dismiss the idea and it makes it easier for people to digest
@@veganpowerlab Yea, there is a threshold when vegans should definitely slide into not wearing 2nd hand leather anymore, and meanwhile we have disagreements on the subject in the vegan community and I'd caution against purifying prohibition - unless we can actually make a practical argument against it NOW. There's a lot of "then you're not vegan" platitudes surrounding such disagreements - and I have a problem with that as a tactic being employed basically due to intuition.
It is easier to simply say "Don't use animal products!", but then we're excluding poor people for instance, and people who don't find the argument appealing.
In other words - let's not lose nuance and reason, and let's give each other a bit of space to get to the right conclusions within the vegan label - again, only if there's no actual correct argument against it.
Fair enough! I guess when I make videos where I poke fun at situations I don't always think of the disagreements within the vegan community and whether some things I say are hard stances.
I have a hard stance for myself and an opinion about it, but I'm also open to discussions and don't normally claim that somebody is not vegan if they wear leather that they had before they became vegan or whatever.
But, I also sometimes think that simplifying the message a bit, even if it seems like a harder stance, can make nonvegans understand the message better.

I didn't watch the whole video, but is this a broad statement you are making about the general population? Calling someone a "piece of shit" is not a good way to convince them to change their established way of life, especially when they aren't the ones abusing the animals (the producers are). The less animal produce the general population buys, the less animal cruelty there will be, and by saying things like I've quoted, it can just create the impression that vegans are in it to feel morally superior as a main goal. If the goal is to reduce animal cruelty, don't call your potential recruits "pieces of shit."
