Daniel, My son and I learned to do this by watching a LOT of You Tube and a LOT of trial and ERROR!!! I wish that we would have saved all the scrap fittings and pipe. It would have made a great photo. Our next project is to set up 20 of the 275 gal plastic tanks outdoors. We are going to try and raise 50 fish in each tank. We are located near Columbus, OH.
@TilapiaFarmer Through many mistakes of our own, we only have 1 male and 2 females that remain from our original group of fish. It took 3 cycles before the females figured out what to do but they have since become egg laying machines. We have actually separated them all so that the females could regain some weight as they were only stopping for 1 week between cycles. We currently have about 6 groups of 150 - 200 fry each. We have lowered the water temp to 76 and they don't seem to mind.
by all means, i commending you for sharing your experiences with those who are trying to start something similar. Also i did not call you nor assumed you are a dummy or anything of the sort. I just reacted on what i saw in your video so please don't get heated up. I see that you are very passionate about what you do so keep it up. if you don't mind i will continue to check your channel. But don't get angry at me if i post an other message displaying my thoughts on another one of your videos..
@jayjayjayxiong I bought the thermostat from a greenhouse supply co. and the heating element is a 1500 watt, 120 volt hot water tank replacement element from Lowes.
Just run of the mill Blue Tilapia. The took about 4 months before they started laying eggs but they had several attempts before they figured out how to follow through. It was at least 6 months before they started spitting out fry.
Thank you for your expert criticism of my efforts. I can see by the feed on your channel that you have done quite a lot of research on the subject of raising fish. While I have absolutely no desire to impress you or anyone else, I share these videos so that anyone who cares might not repeat my mistakes. If you think I'm a dummy and have no clue, you shouldn't pollute your mind with my ideas. Just change the channel.
The filter makes no noise, it's the pump that makes the noise. The one in this vid is small and pretty quiet. Not sure about the GPM. I bought the smallest one I could find on ebay. You're also looking at a system that does not exist anymore. To see what replaced it, watch episodes 8 thru 10 on my channel.
no tilapia farm here my friend. Im studying analytical science, aquaculture, comparing data from several farmers and working out kinks. The last 6 months i resided in Thailand working with and learning from Centar inc. A crude but highly efficient Tilapia farm, 45 years running. The goal is to see if there is possibility of cost reduction in western aquaculture. Theory is nice but hands on is an more informative.
Rather than sand filters you could be feeding vegetable raised beds in hydroponics, fish poop become people food you get to eat the fish too! total win.
@swoop1111 Yes, definitely for food but also because I enjoy it. It's been a difficult project. Not as easy as many would have you believe. As the fish grow, their demands keep increasing. Steve.
I don't keep track of the cost so my wife can't complain, HA! Seriously though, it wouldn't cost all that much to duplicate but it cost a BUNCH to do all the experimenting. You're also looking at a system that does not exist anymore. To see what replaced it, watch episodes 8 thru 10 on my channel.
@daniel3484 Daniel, About the heater, go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a 1500W, 120 volt, hot water tank heating element. Then get online with any greenhouse supply co. and buy a remote thermostat (must be able to handle 1500W). Then get yourself a 2" Uniseal to install the heating element in one of the IBC. Wire the thermostat to the element, tie a weight to the sensor and throw it in the tank and your in business.
First off, this system no longer exists. If you watch all the episodes on my channel, you will see the progression of the system. We do still use the same heaters which are just $10 hot water tank elements from Lowes controlled by a remote sensing thermostat from a greenhouse supply company. Steve.
Awesome video! I am a plumber and i am very pleased with your set-up! You have done a great job! I love how neatly you have installed the entire plumbing system...very professional and clean! I have a few questions, are you building this to sell the tilapia at some point in the future? Or just for personal experimentation? Also why did you drill the holes in the glass tanks below water level, verses at overflow level? How much money do you have invested so far? When complete, Profit Margin?
@daniel3484 Daniel, About the filter, Yes it's a pool filter, BUT, it's NOT the way to go. We're doing away with them. They're good at first, but as you get more and bigger fish, the waste load gets larger and the filters plug too frequently. With the sieve (Vid #5), we can actually SEE the amount of poo that's produced and there's a LOT of it. To have good water quality, you MUST get the poo out first either with a sieve or settling tanks. Check out Theurbanfarmingguys on U Tube. Keep in touch.
@ahsookie1 We are in Central Ohio. That would be a long way to Come @ $4 a gallon. We did have some luck growing some lettuce under lites, but when the weather warmed up and temps in the room rose to 85, it wasn't worth wile. S teve.
@ahsookie1 You should use high pressure like a water hose to flush them out if that dosnt help you let me know. Some people can do this step with one hand holding fish other hand w/hose that take's lots of practice. Also breeder's are like little kitten's they need to be tamed. just handle &let them get to know you.
@web4deb I'm not sure how much it costs to run it yet, just had a separate electric service installed. I did find the problem with the breaker tripping though. I had all the heavy power users on one side of the box. I balanced the circuits and fixed the problem. Since that video, we have added some new grow lights and 6 more tanks. I'm curious about your auto feeder in your greenhouse aquaponics system. Home built or bought from where?
thanks for answering all my questions,, just one more thing,, can you share where you purchased the thermostat that regulates the heater element?? Plus,, do you think you could maintain 80 F in a greenhouse located in the winter months ( Ohio )???
Hi Steve. I need to setup a growout system like yours with the IBC totes, $85 is as cheap as I could find them on CL. I need alittle help with those heaters and the remote sensor, and also, is that just a regular pool filter? Thanks, Daniel
Raining in here... haha! That is a beautiful room, great job. Where did you learn how to do all that? I need to pay someone to set me up like that. What are you gonna do with all those tilapia once they start pumpin out? What state are you in?
Don't knock it till you've tried it. Until you have tried raising meat fish, you have no idea how dirty they are. Anyway, this system no longer exists. If you think this system was complicated, watch the rest of my videos.
Are you in north carolina? Id like to come see your system. I live in east Tennessee. Do you plan on using waist to grow?Starting to add plant's to my system to grow lettuce. I also had trial and error ...lots of error haha.
Hi, nice setup. Im researching before i start mine. Im thinking about building my farm in a storage unit. How would i get oxygen in there when the unit is closed up? do you think thats a good idea?
@fishandworms thanks for that info,,i hate to keep picking your brain, but i love the way you have this set up... please tell me what is the hardware that the heating element is plugged into ( bulkhead ) device. Im trying to figure out how you have it wired. Any instructions would be greatly appreciated my friend,, thanks a bundle!
its ok my husband thinks ive lost my mind too, our house is filled with plants seeds, there are chickens in the back yard, veggies growing in the front yard & back yard. now i want to raise talapia. are you raising your fish for food? im thinking great fish emulsion for hydroponics which in turn could give some filtration to the water. we live in an urban area so the neighbors get a kick out of it
I am trying to breed tilapia here in Michigan and I am having some trouble. Can you tell me, in your experience, if you have more than one male in the breeder tank, will they still breed? And also, would a male ever hide out in the pvc caves I have set up? Such as the less dominant one, or is that something a male would just not do? I am trying to figure out if I have any females without pulling them out and physically inspecting them. I have 3 in my breeder tank. One is bigger than the other 2, I assume that is the male, and the smaller 2 will go and hide in the pipes but I'm not sure if that is just because the big one is such a brute, or if it's because they are female and that is just their nature. Any input would help. Thank you.
G'Day Sir Fishandworms, Greetings and best wishes. Can you please share with me how you installed the heater elements and temperature sensors in the side of your IBC sump? I am trying to do the same here. First challenge is how to anchor the mount for the heater element in the side of the IBC. Your prior comments have have helped where to get parts but the mounting bracket through the side is what I dont understand Many thanks for your time and attention. Warm Regards. EastSideBaronMike
Fishandworms, what is the breed of your breeders? and how many months do they start to breed.also do they mate before eggs form or eggs form and then male fertilize through mating?
Hello :) I've got a question... what is the exact name of your tilapia? and how fast did they grow up to a good cooking size ;) thank you, greets from austria.
@swoop1111 Hi you are not alone, I am as crazy as you too, I live in the UK and I am growing herbs everywhere, I also keep tilapias and my husband is trying to make scence of what I am doing, but you know what, he is going to be a convert soon as the fruits are growing and fish source of food.
@grandmastermicochero Greenhousemegastore. com. search for moisture proof digital thermostat. If your thinking of heating a greenhouse in OH with heat from the fish tanks, no way. It's expensive enough in a well insulated room.
@fishandworms I would suggest you help give your females a rest by capturing the egg's and incubating them, just use water to flush them out of her mouth.
@fishandworms I can't find anyone in Tennessee doing hydro or aquaponic's and my husband also think's ive lost my mind i have drove 50 miles for 4 fish:)
are you having any sucess with your reprodcuction efforts. Here in Coastal North Carolina the water is still cool at 70. the fish are fine but there is no reproductive activity going on. I was wondering with your temps at 85 if your fish were spawning or breeding.
wassupp mann .. Im looking to buy some yy chromosome / all male producing (male/father) fish to buy .. I already have the females ... do u know where i can get these at? And also .. what kinda feed do u use and where can i buy it at? THNX
I was wondering have eaten them you raised ? And what was the cost of investment up to date $. And have you made anny money of investment yet? And how long do you think your investment to get money back?

WOWWWW My dad would LOVE THIS! What a great hobby--I'm going to get my hubby and dad addicted to aquaponics and tilapias--thanks for sharing!
best video description everywhere. Anybody watching this video probably knows at least one other person who is thinking the same thing.

insane filtration system! :)
Very informative, thank you sir.
That's impressive! It must cost a fortune to run that....I get mad when my 15 amp breaker trips!

Wow, pretty impressive. I just started breeding Blues but am nowhere near the scale of your set up
@TilapiaFarmer Don't have a specific plan yet. We are just playing by ear, HA.
@gayboy0660 These are Blue Tilapia and I've been told that with proper water conditions and feeding , they will reach 1 pound in 9 months.

@ahsookie1 Check craigslist under poly tanks. There are usually a few people selling them for $50 - $75 apiece.
this guy is a genius
@vickim247 that is also on my list.
wow # 1 NICE!!!! WORK KEEP IT UP!! COOL :)
I was wondering where you got those heaters that you are using for the tanks. Thanks :D
thanks for answering all my questions,, just one more thing,, can you share where you purchased the thermostat that regulates the heater element?? Plus,, do you think you could maintain 80 F in a greenhouse located in the winter months ( Ohio )???

do you think you could make another short video showing how you created the heating element system ??

how did you tape the glass tanks? also where did you get the tank heaters?

just wonderin how loud in the swimming pool sand filter you have and how many gallons does it do per hour
What did you use to hold the heating element to the plastice wall of the tank?

to complicated. individual filters and pumps work more efficiant and cross contamination is nopt an issue. Less is somethimes more.

Dude, love your set up, but I cant imagine how much your electricity bill is costing ya just to run the pumps and heaters.
@ahsookie1 We havn't had any luck in catching them without having them swallow the eggs. Any help would be appreciated. Steve.
@fishandworms So how does theurbanfarmguy get the poo out or what is the best way? Thank you;)
