Russian Gen 2+ (PN-14K) vs US Gen 3 (Omni 5) night vision comparison

  • Ekran-FEP EPM221G-00-11A Gen 2+ in the PN-14K housing compared with an ITT Omni V thin film aviation tube in a Chinese Daking (NVM-14) housing. Overall, the US Gen 3 does unsurprisingly outperform the Russian Gen 2+; but will it give total and absolute tactical dominance over the latter in most conditions? Probably not.

    Great video, thanks for sharing! The two tubes look similar in the brighter portion of the residence, but in that dark hallway the US Gen3 really pulls ahead.

    What it doesn’t see that much more. The detail is vastly different. Just showing basic shapes is y going to help that much at ranges of 100 meters when identifying targets.

    Awesome thanks alot mate! How is the fov on the ruskis? Same as a pvs 14? The website states 36 degrees while a pvs 14 states 40.
    Thanks again.

      PN-14K should be 40. The PNN-14M is the one with a 36 FOV.

      @@hypemilitaria6447 Thanks so much for your reply, I'm thinking of buying russian gen 2+ tubes which arent autogated, how important would that be? Would i be able to pass street lights, shoot a gun etc with a non autogated unit? Thank you and merry xmas.

      @hypemilitaria6447  Před 3 lety +7

      @@leelotungal819 Yup. Pretty much all Gen 2 tubes after the very first ones have bright source protection. BSP basically reduces voltage to photocathode to turn sensitivity down to protect the tube. This also works in conjunction with automatic gain control which reduces gain. Street lights, gunfire should be no issue; the tubes are for military application and have to withstand those things after all.

      Yup. Does appear that way. Don't think any of AGM's stuff is made in the US. They source their PVS-14 housings from OE in Israel and very likely Gen 2+ tubes from Russia.

    • @hypemilitaria6447
      @hypemilitaria6447  Před 2 lety +8

      In my experience, no. Most gen 3 will pull ahead of the common gen 2+ in very low light (NL5 moonless overcast), but the useful detection and identification range of manpower isn't that much better.

      Interesting that he misses the box with the Gen 2 + but then sees it with Gen 3, while it IS visible with the Gen 2+, chances of missing it and tripping over it are greater than the Gen 3.

    How is the pn14k vs pn10T if you have an idea ?

    • @hypemilitaria6447
      @hypemilitaria6447  Před 2 lety +1

      The PN-14K should be a lot better. The PNV-10T uses a EPM53G-V tube that has quite disappointing specs; the EPM221G in the PN-21K has twice the sensitivity, much higher SNR, better resolution and slightly more gain.

    In your opinion, is the extra cost worth buying the gen 3? For example, imagine someone stole your NVGs and you need to buy another. Would you buy the gen 3 or save a few bucks and get the gen 2?

    • @hypemilitaria6447
      @hypemilitaria6447  Před 2 lety +1

      It really depends. Personally, I've used anything from Gen 1 to Omni VIII Gen 3 and I would say for civilians, a Gen 2+ with >20SNR, >50lp/mm, >20k fL/fc gain would be sufficient for basically any situation you'll find yourself in. But if you truly want high-end performance, I'd recommend better Gen 2+ (Photonis Echo) or any of the thin-film Gen 3s. We are now in an age where Gen 2+ is outperforming older Gen 3 and giving modern thin films a good run for their money.

    Alot of people are posting these types of videos, but it should be known that this could be in violation of ITAR (Intermation Traffic of Arms Regulation) which not only prohibits US manufactured NVG devices to be sold outside the US, but also prohibits allowing foreign entities from looking through said device. I haven't heard of anyone being jammed up over it, but becareful.
