How To Sharpen A Chisel and Plane Iron & My Sharpening Station // Woodworking
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 31. 07. 2018
- In this video, I go over how I sharpen my woodworking hand tools, like my chisels and plane irons, using the Veritas honing guide (bit.ly/VeritasHoningGuide), a combination of DMT diamond plates (amzn.to/2KfYsNA) and a leather strop. This system results in a razor sharp edge that is easy to touch up so you can keep working.

Very helpful. Thanks for sharing Johnny.
Really like this video. Probably the best sharpening station i have seen yet and will definitely be making one.
Really great break down of a super simple sharpening system that you have. Thanks for that!
Thanks Bruce!
The gods have clearly gifted me this video as a sign. My combination of Paul Sellers and Seth's Bike / Singletrack Sampler perusing has created an algorithm that caused CZcams to recommend your video and channel. At this very moment I have laid out a Veritas honing guide, a DMT plate, and the waterstone versions of diamond plates you recommended. Thanks for the timely video! :)
Hah, thatâs awesome! Welcome to the channel.
OK fine, I'll buy the jig!! Prolly the best and simplest sharpening video I've seen.
I just made this entire setup today Before I saw this video, diamond plates work great, will try the strop tomorrow as I am gluing it to the plywood...also am creating a simple quick set block plate for setting chisels and planes to correct angle with my cheap angle roller (works great). no need to use waterstones any more this setup is so FAST
Wow, those are thin shavings! I need that next time I'm starting a campfire.
Great Video, I love the fact you did skip any steps. Nice work
Thanks!
Nicely done Johnny! đđ
Thanks Fred!
Nice system dude. Gotta try a 16000 grit glass stone!
Thanks man!
Super helpful video - could you do a follow up on set up your plane irons? Just getting into hand tools and having some issues getting an ideal set up.
Thanks Jonny u made that look simple, uncomplicated and intimidating.
Hopefully not intimidating, but thanks!
Crafted Workshop haa yeah thatâs what I meant to type.
Thanks, Mr Miyagi! I need to setup a sharpening station. Good call on marking the bamboo board on your X-Carve.
Thanks man! It just worked out so perfectly with that cutting board, love it.
Fantastic video my friend. Thanks for sharing.
Your videos are strangely satisfying to watch đ€
Hah, thanks!
They are, with no-crap! Thank- You!
Awsome mate
Thanks!
I love it when experts like you make videos like this, simple, practical and easy to understand. Thanks a lot! Also I will be buy the same stuff you use.
Thanks man, glad the video was useful!
You can use a black wax fill stick for the lettering - easy to clean out if it goes wrong! Great guide, thank you!
Good call, Iâll check it out
Great video, seems like the "standard" for sharpening at this point, but a great nice concise video. Thanks for sharing. Really looking to grab some diamond stones soon.
Thanks! It's a standard for a reason I think, dead simple and super effective.
Crafted Workshop Totally agree. đ
nice video
can tell me what angle you set for the chisel and did you set a micro bevel?
thanks in advance
Wow super video. Now J knows what is important. And you v got Gordon hand planet IT is realy super?
So many sharpening video out in the world, but this is definetely one of the best. Easy and fast. Thanks man.
Thanks a lot Sergio!
Hope you guys enjoyed this one! Learn more about my CNC, the Inventables X-Carve, here : bit.ly/xcarvecrafted .
Nice job. How did the bamboo go with the water?
I've been using this method for years. Your presentation of the technique was great. New to your channel but I am really enjoying it. If I can make a slight recommendation don't use a strop on the back on your chisels will create a back bevel. Not my epiphany it comes from more gifted woodworkers than I. Use a unfinished block of wood as a strop on the back of chisels.
Thanks, glad youâre enjoying the content and welcome! Also, good tip!
Oh god this is my dream setup
I just sharpened my boyfriend's giant collection of uselessly dull knives (I'm in the Church of 3 sharp knives...) with man-made whetstones and it took me over 8 hours to put real edges on them. At least a 3rd of which was stone flattening!
I'm going to to start amassing a DMT set...
Nice, have fun!
Most of the woodworkers I know don't strop and especially don't strop the back of chisels. Because the strop is soft, it creates a slight rounding over of the metal which doesn't matter for a plane blade, but you want the back of a chisel to be absolutely flat when you reference it against a surface that you are trimming.
I don't think stropping removes nearly enough material to make any difference in the flatness of the backs of chisels. I just made a few passes to remove any burr and give the very edge a little polish. Stropping is critical in sharpening in my opinion and a lot of talented woodworkers I know use a strop in their sharpening routine (Matt Cremona, Shannon Rogers, James Wright, Paul Sellers, etc).
You can also use a piece of flat wood, mdf and charge it with coumpound (Paul Sellers does that). Polish the back without rounding the edge. But the the wood should be flat like the plates, which may or may not be flat.
I think hair on arms are necessary for every woodworker. But nice tutorial Johny.
Would it be sharp without the leather? Is it for aesthetic reasons?
I think this is the best sharpening system put there. I do wonder if its worth it to set the diamond stones flush with the board so you can use a longer stroke with the honing guide.
Yea it works really well. Not sure Iâd flush would be better, I wouldnât want the board getting in the way of referencing off the plates.
Nice design for holding the plates. Would you be interested in selling me one of the boards? Just CNC routes and unfinished. I want to custom stain mine and add my own feet for a custom drawer fit up in my work bench.
Did you try a tormek? It seem to be much faster and do a great job.
I havenât, theyâre mega pricey.
Which narex chisels are these.
What type of plane is that?
Thanks for sharing your process. The iso tunes link doesn't seem to be working
Hmm, whatâs not working for you? Working on my end. Thanks!
Crafted Workshop the tab opens and closes immediately. It's very strange. May just be a glitched on my end. Are the extras with it? I have the pros now. The extras look more comfortable but have 2 hours less battery life
Huh, might want to clear your cache and try again. All the link does is give me credit if you go to purchase. I love the Xtras, I was never a big fan of the over ear wire on the Pros. Enough battery life for a full day of work for sure.
Crafted Workshop thanks! I'll give that a try and then order a pair. Thanks for making sharpening easy. I really appreciate the effort you put in your videos. There's always great takeaways
Thanks a lot!
Great video! Iâm curious as to why you use window cleaner? Iâve seen people use water and some use oil. I knew a guy once that only used 3-in-1 oil. Whatâs the difference?
Thanks! I just use it because others who use the same system do too and it seems to work.
When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was something else. Have you ever created a wood/concrete table? If not, could you please? Because I'd love to try something like that, but I'd need to know what kind of concrete would be the best to use and even an idea of wood. I thought recycling pallet wood since it would be an interesting idea. I also thought about making it rustic by using a chalk white paint and sanding to give it a rustic look.
*I dare you to attempt this and maybe I could copy it. I may have to change some thing because of the lack of tools I have. I may need to purchase lens at Lowe's unless you come up with a better idea.*
I have built a concrete table before, search on my channel. Enjoy!
"this is veg tan leather, its plenty beefy enough" (or something like that) wow dude thats cold! poor cow :P
đ
Do you have a recommendation on a set of diamond sharpening stones? I don't see a link in the description
These are called DMT diamond plates and I linked to these three specific ones in the video description.
Crafted Workshop Trippy. Not sure how I missed that, thanks!
Lol all bloodied up. Gotta get these stones! I used stick back sandpaper and it worked but man are my forearms sore!
Hah, theyâre definitely sharp!
I notice you chose not to add a secondary bevel on your chisel. Any particular reason why?
I donât really think itâs necessary. Takes a lot more time to reestablish the bevel if youâve got a secondary bevel on there, they just seem like a bit of a fad.
Johnny... plz...
Use some bandaids!
the amazon link has 6 different models, can you confirm what 3 you are using? they are too expensive to guess!
The Course, Fine, and Extra Fine. The individual links in my video description go to the specific ones I use!
What is this "buffing compound" made of?
Iâm pretty sure itâs very fine particles that help abrade the surface to a finer finish.
Hey Johnny. This video is pretty timely. I've been struggling to sharpen with a granite tile/sandpaper system and have been thinking about upgrading to some diamond stones. The setup you're using looks simple, effective, and durable. I think I'll grab those 3 DMT stones, a strop, and make a little station out of an unused panel I've got glued up in my shop. Thanks for the info!
Also, how do you like those Narex chisels? Right now I just have some junky ones from HD. Is this a good intermediate set?
That's great! The Narex set is a great bang-for-your-buck chisel for sure, I don't really have a need for a nicer set personally, they do everything I need.
I'll give them a try. Going to continue using my cheaper chisels to learn sharpening. Once I have a reasonable amount of faith that I'm not going to destroy them, I'll move to the new ones. Thanks!
Hah, itâs tough to totally destroy them!
To cut the cost you can skip the medium stone. Coarse is good to re establish bevel/nick or correct mistakes made when hand sharpening. The fine (1200) one is a must before the strop. The medium one is good when your edge becomes too dull, you don't have to go to the coarse to do a heavy touch up, but you can also do that with the fine one. Considering the cost of a 8" dmt, it's not a very good purchase unless you can absolutely afford it.
I think I'll keep the fine stone on the table. As someone who is just building up a stable of hand tools, I can see the use of having a wide range of grits for establishing bevels and getting them scary sharp. I do appreciate the advice.
Not to be that individual but at 1:45 you spelled âcoarseâ as âcourseâ. I love the milling idea though.
Noice, wish i had the money for diamond plates
They're a great investment as they last for a really long time and require zero maintenance.
Any plans on releasing the CNC file as plans ? I don't have a CNC but would try to commission somebody a few bucks to make the board with theirs.
Same question as Alec above. Will you be releasing the plans so we can commission someone to cut it out? Or, would you be interested in cutting it out for folks that are interested?
Am surprised a robot didn't sharpen the chisels for this dude!(real woodworking channels are (paul seller, woodbywrigh samurai carpinter !)
Coarse is 325 grit? Wow. Because I bought an 80 grit plate on eBay but it wasn't diamond, it was a mixture of different colored unknown grit particles. The 400 and 1000 were diamond, but felt extremely fine...
Yea, by their definition that's coarse. Still fairly fine, so lower grit sandpaper on a flat surface would be good for major stock removal.
shout out to paul sellers?
Did you say fuzzy bits
Course
Ikea hack
I think it's not a good idea to test them on the skin that S seen in the minute 7:58
*coarse
Hah, wow, thanks for that! Must be sleepy today :)
James Roberts OH GOD
I bet he says âwell, actually...â a lot too.
Really. Trust someone who can't spell?
Awesome now I just need to go buy a fricken cnc smh doesn't anyone do anything by hand anymore?
I must agree with you Mr. Smith and I just started his hobby of wood working and am looking at all videos and channels on how to make a Sharpening station for my cheap plates (like i said am a beginner)I thought his dude was gonna be a good experience or learning the ropes of this hobby, man I was like whf is this new technology of wood working bull shit is this dude teaching!am sorry but this dude got nothing like those masters of woodworking like Paul sellers, wood by Wright and rex know better.
Still have your micro brewery going on
Not much time for brewing these days with the channel and the baby! Thanks for your support, Trevor, really appreciate my sponsors.
Right from unfinished house
You almost run out of arm hair. And don't want to think what you would shave next đ€Ł
Hah!
Whatâs the point of recreating Paul Sellersâ sharpening station if youâre just going to use a cnc for easy router plane work?
Because I have other planes and chisels that need sharpening.
Thatâs a âslickâ sharpening station.
So all you need to make this sharpening station is a CNC machine proper craftsman stuff then.
Mysterious? The Egyptian Pyramids are mysterious not woodworking.
I donÂŽt like that, just machine doing everything, buying new wood, no nice for me, I like hands on hand tool, hands on scrap wood, thatÂŽs make nice, thatÂŽs real woodworking, just my option, donÂŽt shame.
Nice build Johnny but, No, No, No water based lube on those plates. Only use honing oil. Water based will micro-rust those diamonds right out. Really.
No it wonât, as long as you dry the plates off afterwards. Many, many people have used Windex or water for years with no issues. Even DMT says itâs OK. And thanks!
Ya dmt specifically says use water.
I'm pretty sure this is not how Paul Sellers made his sharpening station. Just saying.
'Crafted?' You use a machine to do the entire job. Why bother to have sharpening plates at all? Just get your machine to do everything. Don't worry, I won't bother coming back.
Really concise clear video! Loved it
Thanks Matthew!
