  • So after constantly seeing issues on social media with dusted landcruisers, I my 200 hasn't had issue with dust ingress after 225000kms over 10 years travelling all around Australia.
    3x Tips.....make sure the seal is fitted properly, use high quality filters and use some o-Ring grease on the seal.

    In South Africa there's been plenty of documented dust breaches on 70's and 200's. The fact that this is even a thing, blows my mind. Vehicles of this calibre, claiming to be purpose built, should never, ever, need fixes, to such a fundamental component. And yet, Toyota happy to allow this as their " new" standard. Crazy.

    you were so aware and carful and it still got dust through. Looking forward to see how you fix it with the new engine.

    When I was a mechanic many moons ago we used a thin wipe of petroleum jelly to coat the inside of the air box (not on the filter or sensors obviously) and it’s surprising how much dust got passed and caught in the Vaseline and it kept most of the dust away from the filter and out of the engine. It only required the occasional wipe out every so often and a quick re-application

    I went and got some of that silicon grease. I was going to use rubber grease, but this looks a lot better. I have been OK so far, but will look at adding the foam strip as well. see how it goes.
    Thanks for the Clark Rubber grease tip :)

    I have only done 23K in my 200, started off with rubber grease just in case. Like the foam tape, will be adding that as soon as I get back from this trip. No ingress so far

    Consensus I’ve seen elsewhere is that the dust is being sucked through the factory filter itself by the twin turbos and not around the seal?

      It’s been a long time since I’ve run a factory Toyota filter.....generally run Rycos and haven’t had any issues.

      I am pretty sure its around the filter not through it but I guess there is always an exception.

      I have seen turbo charged crushing plants with blocked filters collapse and break up into the compressor fins due to the filter being to clogged to handle the demand for air.
      Same would go for these.

    Ypu would think that Toyota would of done a better job of the design

    Hi Graham, is the stock airbox on 70 series good enough? I will get my new 76 next month and not sure whether to replace it or not

      Ensure you use a good filter (genuine paper is best IMO).....found the Ryco seal around the edge isn’t as thick as factory seal.
      Look up Project 200 - Jamie just did a very in-depth test of airboxes & filters.....very interesting results.

  • @danmacka4425
    @danmacka4425 Před 6 lety

    Do you think the ryco filter seals better than the Toyota one assuming same method of install.

    • @great_offroad_adventures
      @great_offroad_adventures  Před 6 lety

      Would be hard to say....I’d ever so slightly bend the clips so they provide more tension....along with the foam and grease and other than an aftermarket airbox, your never going to get it to seal any better.
      Any further dust ingress would have to be coming through the filter then.

      Great Off-Road Adventures - Graham Reinders thanks. I’m very unhappy about the amount of dust from factory that’s getting in.
