  • The series is now switching to the sections showing the techniques. I know some of the images don't line up.
    Series Info:
Due to social distancing I'm going to make a series going through the verses of the Zettel for my students to use as a reference. The Zettel is the series of cryptic verses written by Johannes Liechtenauer to his students(1400s). It would become the foundation of the German combat system lasting over 200 years.
In my opinion the Zettel and the treatises from it are a series of advanced techniques written for people who can already fight with a sword. Therefore these videos as well are not made to be an in depth trainer for beginners but just going through the idea behind each verse.
These are my interpretation at the moment but as we develop, grow and learn, ideas can change. Feel free to disagree with me and try out other interpretations. My goal is to make very short and precise videos for one or two verses. Because of this there will be lots of information and details that don't make the cut.

Thank you for making the liechtenauer Zettel series. Really helps by trying to understand things.

Hello 9 Months since my last comment and I'm slowly getting a better understanding of each and every gloss. I'm still using your videos for studying as an addendum. Cause your videos give the most clear visual representation for the techniques.
For the Gloss: "who to the war tends above gets shamed below."
My understanding from the germam transcription would be:
It may be meant for winding against an opponent that tries to keep the point away.
Because in the german book from dierk Hagedorn it is written that:
    - you begin with the wrath
+which he (the opponent) is hard in the bind
-you wind into the upper left opening with an (Oberstich) upperthrust (same technique as before against an opponent hard in the bind)
+if he still is defensive and is hard in the bind
-you should wind towards the lower right opening
+when he still is hart in the bind
-you finally wind towards the upper right opening.
All this moves are written one after another in the german book.
In my Tests his blade may end now on the right side of his body, and yours will land between his blade and his head. If you wind precisely you can than get the overhand pretty easy and either hew, cut or thrust towards him without him being able to successfully push you off (if he still is only defensive) because he will only hit himself with your blade even harder due to it being between his blade and his head.
I hope I'm making kind of sense to you.

Ya it's a hard thing to explain over text. It's always fun when you get someone stuck like that with the blade.
When I practiced it with another person later they actually used a different parry. Instead of a basic parry (~crown) to push left they used a Ox/over hanging to push right. This ended up leading to us being able to match the text. And essentially saw it as a very detailed way to describe mutating, with just added movements after.
At the moment I teach 'Going high in the bind' as going into the upper hanging Ox. Without getting control, or too soon. So the hands going up not the point. Because going into ox without control actually gives them mutating. It's often how I see mutating happen accidentally in sparring.
