This is a hysterical movie. I love it. Great writing and jokes. Ryan O'Neal and Barbra Streisand worked fantastic together. The judge had me laughing so, so hard.
"Use your charm"
One of my favorite comedies. Very much inspired by the film "Bringing Up Baby" starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, another of my favorite comedies. The multiple identical bag mix up was borrowed from the French comedy "Oscar". "Oscar" was later remade, directed by John Landis and starring Sylvester Stallone. It also has the bit concerning the multiple identical bags. But people wrongly accused it of stealing it from "What's Up Doc?" when it was actually from the original "Oscar" from the 60s. The remake of "Oscar" is terribly underrated and very funny.
The director of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, said that its car chase was inspired by the chase in "What's Up Doc?. I'd say it was also inspired by the car chase in "For Your Eyes Only" since both feature a little yellow car that is hardly what you'd expect a superspy to drive.
Another great Ryan O'Neal film is "Paper Moon". It's also directed by Peter Bogdonovich.
An unrelated film I'd like to recommend is "A Face in the Crowd". It's a great film that's still relevant today. Maybe even more so.
It's a pleasure to see you react to this! At the time of its release, Love Story was quite recent (still occasionally showing up in theaters -- movies stayed in release a long time back then), so Ryan O'Neal saying that its famous tagline "Love means never having to say you're sorry" was "the dumbest thing I ever heard" was especially funny, and even a bit shocking.
One bit of trivia that you didn't read to us: Hugh Simon, the supercilious musicologist with the outrageous accent and the floppy hair, was directly modeled on the critic John Simon, who was active at the time. Mr. Simon was famous for his Serbo-Hungarian accent and his sneering loathing for many popular favorites, including Peter Bogdanovich and Barbra Streisand (he would go on and on about her extreme ugliness). So this was a chance to make fun of him.
LOVE STORY is Ryan O'Neal's breakthru film and for WHATS UP fans who haven't seen LOVE STORY, they completely miss the closing scene's reference.
And Hugh Simon and the judge are in Young Frankenstein. Also, the judge is also in a few other movies including Blazing Saddles.
@@scottjo63 And Liam Dunn had a fairly large role in BLAZING - holding up his Bible, shouting out scriptures only to be shushed. Or have the Bible shot out of his hand, "Yer own yer own-!" BLAZING had so many hilarious moments to required perfect timing, too - like at the movie theatre, when tourists mentioned "Hedy Lamarr" just as Harvey Korman walked past - "That's HEDLEY!" Perfect timing.

How could anyone think Streisand was ugly? She is sexy and sensual and funny and absolutely stunning.
Oh, Marty, for shame, for shame! Eunice was Madeline Kahn, and if you have seen "Blazing Saddles" or "Young Frankenstein", you will know her as a favorite of Mel Brooks. Here she is in her very second film appearance. And yes, if you re-watch yet again, there is an even earlier clue that Larrabee is drawn to her. See if you can catch him exclaiming, in the party scene at his home "Who is that brave, unbalanced woman?"; and in that same scene he demands that they take their hands off her.
Larrabee is the versatile and brilliant Austen Pendleton, who, if you have watched "My Cousin Vinny", is one of the lawyers (I can't describe further; if you haven't seen the movie, I don't want to spoil it).
The movie has three Mel Brooks actors: Kahn of course; Kenneth Mars is Howard's competition for the grant. He is Inspector Kemp in "Young Frankenstein" and Franz Liebkin in "The Producers". Liam Dunn is the Judge: he was the Reverend in "Blazing Saddles" and has a tiny role as the Old Man on the Gurney in "Young Frankenstein".
I have to stop: the movie is so chock-full of talent, I could overload your comment section spouting. But I am so glad you liked this: it's a family favorite.

This is, for my money, one of the 10 best written comedies of all time. Just absolutely stellar.
If you haven't seen Young Frankenstein, may I recommend it.
Also, if you haven't seen Clue, you absolutely MUST see that as well.
Both are brilliant, iconic comedies with stellar, stacked casts but also feature more of the one of a kind Madeline Kahn (who debuted in this film as Eunice Burns). I knew you weren't a Eunice fan but that's because Madeline was NAILING the role. She's a comedy GENIUS (who we, sadly, lost too soon) and her performances in Young Frankenstein and Clue are TIMELESS.
For more Barbra Streisand, may I recommend The Owl and The Pussycat as a follow up to this film. Obviously Funny Girl is the film that MADE her as a very young performer, but The Owl and the Pussycat makes for a SENSATIONAL follow up to this one.
This really is Ryan O'Neal's best work. He was in many dramas, but I think he was at his best in comedy. If you wanted to follow him up in a drama, I'd say go with Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon... (see The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and Dr. Strangelove first tho). It's a mixed bag but maybe the most beautiful film ever lit by natural light in cinematic history (and O'Neal really stretches as an actor in it).
It was a JOY to get to ride along while you enjoyed this.
Another classic film with Ryan O'Neal is Paper Moon with his then 9 year old daughter. She, by the way won an Academy Award for her role in it. It is a great dark comedy and you will really like it

I was 13 when this came out and we went to see it. I have loved it ever since. The greatest thing about it to me is that although Streisand is a major part of this film, it circles around an entire story of others and she is just stuck in the middle. All of the other characters are just as colorful.
Love this movie. Saw it at least a dozen times on first release (once I sat through it 4 times in a row). Favorite line: "you made me smash my LifeSavers" - also loved the Chinatown parade where they are playing "La Cucaracha" on their instruments.
The reason the bailiff opened court like he was an auctioneer helped to hide the fact that the judge could have been Judy's father - he says it all so quickly that it glosses over the "Judge Maxwell presiding" at the end, so you don't connect that Judy has the same last name.
Side story - that scene where the two cars crash as Barbara Streisand is crossing the street to the hotel - Bogdanovich had a crew member rent two cars for the scene and stressed that he needed collision insurance on both cars. He filmed the scene, then returned the crashed cars to the rental agency.
Oh wow…all the actors in this that are so young. The guy with the long black hair that put his hand on her breast to feel her heart beat close to the beginning of the movie…he’s the court appointed attorney in the “My Cousin Vinnie” movie…the one with the nervous speech problem….hilarious
That’s why it’s important to watch the opening credits to this great movie. You have a young Randy Quaid, Kenneth Mars. Quaid and O’Neal were together for a fight scene in Paper Moon. Madeleine Khan in her first or second Neurotic film, also starred in Paper Moon.
Barbara shines in this role.

Howard Hawks directed Bringing Up Baby. Another movie hawkstead was To Have or Have Not. In that movie Humphrey Bogart's character is named Harry Morgan, But lauren the call's character calls him steve throughout the movie but Lauren Bacall's character calls him Steve throughout the movie. That is why in this movie Judy calls Howard Steve.
And Bogart's character calls Bacall's character "Slim." Hawks was married to Slim Hawks for a while, and his wife called him "Steve." Obviously, the character of Howard here is named after him. Bogdanovich studied Hawks' films and also interviewed him.
I think this film is much more than just "fun". It is a comedy of manners (ala 1972), a social love story (celebrating the entirety of culture from pizza making, to Chinese New Year, to kiddie cartoons), a distillation and anarchic celebration of cinema. Life is very good in California of the 70´s, especially for the new generation of filmmakers. They have discovered something. This film is a testament to this era of creative and social vitality.
Absolutely loved this reaction. I forgot how fun your page is. And this is one of my all-time favorite comedies. Incidentally, Buddy Hackett, Barbra Streisand, and Bugs Bunny would’ve all said “KWAWFEE” similarly because the two real people and Bugs have working class accents from Brooklyn, NY.
I saw "What's Up Doc" in the theatre in 72 when I was 8. I've watched it 20x since. Yes "Love Story" is worth a watch. It is the OG Love Story that so many movies copied after. After What's Up Doc Peter Bogdanovich and Ryan O'Neil and other cast member made "Paper Moon". A really good movie worth watching. A really good Barbra Streisand movie She Directed and Stars in is "The Prince of Tides". Nick Nolte is fantastic in it!
And I often overlook Streisand's powerful performance opposite Richard Dreyfuss in NUTS (1987 courtroom drama-murder mystery).
Absolute classic comedy. The trend of putting credits at the end of the movie btw began with Star Wars in 1977...

I lived in SF and the Hotel they used is the Hilton. It’s obviously been renovated over the decades but those duel escalators are still there. Streisand did these 70s comedies that people don’t really know about. For Pete’s Sake and Up the Sandbox. O’Neal and Streisand teamed up again for The Main Event.
San Franciscan here, read your comment. I couldn’t place the escalators! My mind keep thinking this must be around the time One Embarcadero was finished, I was only 1 at the time of this movie. I going to call my mom or dad and ask. Hahahaha

Thank you for doing this movie. Saw it in the theater with my parents when i was 6 and several times more as of now and to this day still laugh hysterically even after seeing it more times than I can count. Funny Lady is another good one of hers.

Great reaction!!! There is a little bit of business that was used in this film that was used first in another film, The Caine Mutiny (1954). I won’t say what it is in case you want to watch the film, which starred Humphrey Bogart.
Every time the elevator doors opened, you hear the music playing .. nice touch .. lol
I saw this film a couple of years after it came out. I remember that during the chase scene I was laughing so much that I didn’t know what would happen first; pee my pants or be sick.
The double doors in the hotel were for housekeeping to take the customers clothes and have them cleaned/dry cleaned for the next morning. And Madeline Khan was also in CLUE. You should look up that one, released in 1985 w/ Tim Curry, Eileen Brennan, Leslie Ann Warren

History Lesson here:" Love means never having to say your sorry" is a direct quote from Ryan O'Neal's famous 1970 movie Love Story. Many people and comedians would use that quote and the other person would respond "That's the dumbest thing I ever heard." In the theater at the time everyone roared with laugher when those two said that at the end. the joke now goes over everyone's head [like yours] who did not see the movie first or did not live in the era as a teen or older.
Another great Barbara Streisand comedy is "For Pete's Sake" which was made a few years before this film. It also includes slapstick but has a more cohesive storyline.
'What's Up Doc' is a line from Howard Hawks 'It Happened One Night', one of the great screwball comedies that inspired this movie. Clark Gable says it while gnawing on a carrot and not long after in a Looney Tunes short Bugs Bunny says it in parody of Gable. It's just now the original reference is removed from Bugs. So many of the lines and gags in this movie are referencing Howard Hawks.

I saw this when it premiered at Radio City Music Hall with thousands in the audience, all laughing hysterically. I miss watching comedy films in theaters. Just not the same watching it solo at home.

This was one of the first films -- if not the first - that I saw in the theater, back in 1972 I was all of 8 years old and my older siblings were charged with getting me out of the house, so my Mom could relax (I'm the youngest of 10 kids, do the math). Once I saw it, I demanded that they take me again...we ended up seeing it about 3 or 4 times that year! I absolutely adore this movie and my daughter and I watch it a few times every year! We LOVE this film! Good stuff, thank you!

Great 70s comedy stars Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal in a remake of the classic BRINGING UP BABY with bits of TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT and CASABLANCA thrown in. Peace out.
Part of the reason the movie worked so well is because they were a couple at the time. Another film that is similar is For Pete's Sake with Michael Sarazin. Eunice(Madaline Kahn) was in Clue and Young Frankenstein. My favorite slapstick is Foul Play with Oscar Winner Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase(Fletch,Seems Like Old Times ,Vacation series) I believe the actor who played Simon was the villain in Hot Dog: The Movie. Randy Quaid was in Brokeback Mountain as well. The actor who plays the hotel manager who wants Howard to "Leave immediately": was in the first Magnum P.I. series as Higgins. Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell based on a book by Patrick Russell is another insane comedy.

You can see the movie was inspired by 'Bringing Up Baby'. Cary Grant stepped on Katherine Hepburn's dress and it ripped. Cary Grant was an academic. Katherine Hepburn was just as barmy as Barbara Streisand's character. There's no leopard but 'What's Up Doc?' is very similar. I love both movies 💕 . I'm going to miss Ryan O'Neal. He played Doctor Temperance Brennan's bank robbing Dad in the fabulous tv series 'Bones' for many years ♥.

If Marty does BRINGING UP BABY, he should be warned there are handful of other comedies that are fitfullyl labeled as "screwball comedies", and all contribute in a large part of Hollywood Comedies of the '30s and '40s. There's MY MAN GODFREY will William Powell... Cary Grant's HIS GIRL FRIDAY... Gary Cooper's BALL OF FIRE and MR DEEDS GOES TO TOWN... many more. IMDB lists "523" applicants for that 'club'.
The guy under the table that looked familiar is John Byner - actor, stand-up comic, impressionist and voice-over artist. Liam Dunn is hilarious as the judge. Going largely unnoticed for 25 years, this was considered his breakout role at 55. He always looked much older than he was and died just a few years later at 59. Randy Quaid would work with Bogdanovich again on "Paper Moon".
Randy was already in THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, also.
My favorite movie!!! Took me several years and a lot of viewings to realize that “Steve” is from a Warner Brother’s move “To Have and Have Not” and has the line “You know how to whistle, don’t you Steve? You just put your lips together and blow”
So many fun facts relating to this film - Firstly, the fire in the hotel room scene, Madeline was actually freaking out because she hates fire. The car chase sequence required MANY stunt drivers but the bit where they all drove down those famous Frisco steps, they got into serious trouble for damaging them. Aaaaand, the kid with long hair who's bike gets stolen is Ryan O'Neal's actual son! :D
Sorrell Booke, who plays the dumb house detective, was actually a genius. He could speak twelve languages, six fluently, enrolled in Columbia University when he was 16, graduated at 19, and received a master of fine arts at the Yale School of Drama. He served as a Counterintelligence officer during the Korean war. Booke (Boss Hogg on The Dukes of Hazard) using his ‘charm’ on Mabel Albertson, (Darren Stevens mother on ‘Bewitched) by tripping her from the lobby all the way down the corridor to her room; until she fights back by biting his leg, is my choice for funniest scene. I love slapstick.
[LOOK, IT’S THE GOAT! - 18:42 ❤ ] Mabel Albertson was the sister of Jack Albertson, best known from starring in ‘Chico & the Man.
I've always loved this film - it's a perfect 70s update of the screwball comedy, and gave us the brilliant breakthrough performance from Madeline Kahn. The car chase is pretty much an homage to both "the Love Bug" and "Bullitt," and it changed filming in SF forever, because you can see damage done to the stairs when the cars go down them, and the city was pissed. The city is now far stricter on getting the exact details of what, where & how stuff is filmed.
51:83 It's pretty simple really. They were able to use footage from a Warner Bros. cartoon, because the film was produced and released by Warner Bros. Studio. Those cartoons are their intellectual property, and they are free to use them at will.

That makes NO sense, because you clearly have a collection of reactions of movies I love and I am NOW going to have to marathon your library. I CAN tell you this. It all started with you reacting to "What's Up Doc?" One of my favorite movies all time. You might want to check out another Buck Henry masterpiece when you get a chance. It's called "The Graduate" (1967.) "What? You never heard of it? Oh sure, it's the one with the nut that interrupts the wedding by banging on the windows. Yea. Right. THAT one."
I love this movie. My parents took me to see it back in 1972. I now have the blu ray.
There are at least four versions of "A Star is Born": Janet Gaynor and Frederic March in 1937; Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954; Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976, and the most recent, with Lady Gaga and Andrew Dice Clay in 2018. I've only seen Gaynor and Garland. I like them both, but perhaps Gaynor's has a leaner, tighter script. But Garland and James Mason, and Garland singing, and Mason just ... talking.... sigh....
You should get to know Frederic March, one of the greats of his generation. Later in life, he and Spencer Tracy tear up the screen together in "Inherit the Wind", a great, great movie. He does a great "Jekyll and Hyde"; a thoughtful, humor touched tragic role in "Best Years of Our Lives". Just to name a couple of options.
You must watch "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" 1963. Great cast. Almost every classic comedian is in it. I know you will love it.
Marty, I'm so glad you got to enjoy this film -- one which I always hesitate to say is my favorite but usually wins that accolade when I really tally the merits of the many that I love. But, please, I beg this of you: take a screen-cap of your image from this vid to replace your current CZcams avatar/icon: the latter is not at all flattering, whereas you are looking *damn fine* these days and the delight in your face here is much more charismatic.
Also, a bit of trivia for y'all: in the original theatrical release and VHS form of this film, that "Love means never having to say you're sorry" line was first met by O'Neal's look and then a cut back to Streisand's face, and she blinked five times in rapid succession while maintaining that open-mouthed/glassy-eyed expression you see at the end of her line. It was hilarious parody of the sentimental pathos of "Love Story"...but it was cut from the DVD release and perhaps subsequent digital forms. The film's script is endlessly quotable, but that rapid-fire-blinking shot is a visual element that deserves to be included among the toppers.

What a wonderfully screwball comedy film indeed! Great behind the scenes clips and trivia at the end. Madeline Kahn plays another "awful" fiancé in Young Frankenstein. She is comedy gold. Your comments and attention to detail make watching this even more enjoyable. Thank you!

OMG, the 70's were ruthless and unforgiving with the use of Beige, rust, avocado green, harvest gold, mustard yellow, Chartreuse, etc. Oh, and the wallpaper in the rooms!! What were they thinking?! Classic! ** Wait, I'm seeing a drinking game coming up...we could take shots based on the reoccurrence of certain colors? Or a drunken "name that color" game, or something! Huzzah! Booze me!

My favorite Streisand film is The Owl and the Pussycat with George Segal. Very funny! You also should see Paper Moon. Ryan O'Neal and his daughter Tatum who won the oscar for that role.
Loved that reaction. I’d say don’t waste your time on Love Story. It was a phenomenon at the time, but it really isn’t a very good movie. For more top notch young Barbara watch The Way We We’re, which is an all time great love story, with Barbara and Redford, and On a Clear Day. Of course, Bullet is a must!

Highly recommend you watch It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963). All star cast comedy that you will never forget.
the last great screwball comedy. a perfect example of the form. perfectly cast. heaven! it is just heaven! the thrill of seeing this on the big screen, in a big theatre, with a big crowd-OH! it was an event! the energy of the audience all together! this is what going to the movies used to be like!! so exciting! it was like going to see a live performance or such. the riotousness of the car chase! every moment with the judge! the romance of Streisand and O'neal.
I embarrassed to say, and it is an old cliche-but it was better-when I was younger. life I mean. yes-life is better when you are young in many ways-but movies were like this. and we all went together as a group, and nobody had a phone except the one on the wall in their kitchen, we wrote letters, we listened to records, we talked to each other, we laughed, we went out on dates, we figured things out, it was better. there were many many problems and horrors, truly, but it was better. we were together somehow in a way that we no longer can be. sad. so glad you loved this film. it is a great one!

Nice discovering your channel! Thoroughly enjoyed your video. The "annoying fiancee", Madeleine Kahn, was a phenomenal actress. She's also brilliantly annoying starring with Ryan O'Neal again in, Paper Moon (1973) and fantastic in, Clue (1985).

This is one of my favorite movies. They made one of the most romantic couples of that time. The chemistry was quite real! "The Main Event" is another one of those romantic movies with them on. If you want to see Ryan on another film, one of my favorite is "Paper Moon"

A great throwback to the screwball comedies of the 30's. Wonderful cast of characters. I saw this film not long after it came out. My personal favorite film of Ryan O'Neal is The Driver from 1978. Very overlooked film worth checking out.
Austin Pendlelton plays Fredrick Larrabee. He plays the court appointed lawyer in My Cousin Vinny in 1992.

Never thought of the resemblance to Brad from Rocky Horror. What I kept thinking of when I last watched it was that he reminded me of Cary Grant's scientist character in the screwball comedy, "Bringing Up Baby" with Katherine Hepburn as the hairbrained love interest (who was also very much like Barbra Streisand's character). In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this movie was inspired in part by screwball comedies of the 40s.
Bringing Up Baby is very much worth a watch as is Arsenic and Old Lace (also with Cary Grant).

Yeah, Mark! 😅 That's my brain for you haha! Oh yes, thank you. Great timing actually, as it had been on the requests list and so I watched it for the channel last night! Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for that! Yeah, from what I've read since, it seems they were heavily inspired by Bringing Up Baby in making this film. I'd had the film on the list and not put the two together as having that link 😅 Needless to say, I absolutely loved them both!

One of those comedies that stays fresh even after rewatching (unlike _Love_ _Story_ - a soapy Rom which has definitely aged). The comedy has held up remarkably well over the last half-century, even though the suitcase mix-up has been used in several films since. Great comments, and the info about the final animation was quite interesting. Streisand was a stage actress before going into film. _Funny_ _Lady_ fell short of _Funny_ _Girl_ - mostly due to the writing. The best version of _A_ _Star_ _Is_ _Born_ is the 1954 version with Judy Garland. As far as suggestions, I'd recommend _All_ _About_ _Eve_ or _The_ _Philadelphia_ _Story_ - another screwball comedy). The best _Sunset_ _Boulevard_ next - Great choice and I'm looking forward to your take on that one!
I'd recommend LOVE STORY simply to 'get the joke' at the end of LOVE STORY. Also, there's a young Tommy Lee Jones (as Oliver's roommate) as well as a glimpse of John Marley before he becomes a big famous Hollywood producer in THE GODFATHER... y'know, the one who sleeps with horse's heads.
It’s like a Benny Hill sketch because the genre is slapstick comedy.

Another screw ball comedies with the biggest cast before The Expendables is It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963) you ought to watch. It's a classic!!
Here's a gem of a movie from my childhood! I was 13 when this movie premiered and my family went to see it. You mentioned "The Love Bug," (another happy memory for me), which we'd seen several years before "What's Up Doc?" If you want to see another forgotten gem with a great San Francisco car scene, watch "Foul Play" (1978) with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. Dudley Moore and Burgess Meredith play hilarious roles in this comedy, too. "Foul Play" has that wonderful and elusive combination of humor and scariness. You won't be disappointed!
From back in 1972, The Godfather is the first movie I saw that had no credits at the start. It was trailblazing and seem to remember that the producer had to pay a fine to either the director's guild or the actor's union for doing it that way. Hardly any producer/director had the skill of Alfred Hitchcock in making opening credits exciting as he did for Psycho, Vertigo, North by Northwest, etc. 12:14 The Croatian musicologist Kenneth Mars also played the old Nazi soldier in The Producers and Otto Mannkusser on TV in Malcolm In The Middle.
Eunice Burns is played by Madeline Kahn in her first feature. She is in Young Frankenstein.
After you watched A&C Meet Frankenstein 1948, you said you were going to watch Young Frankenstein.

If you like another car chase in San Francisco that is homage and also original, The Dead Pool (1988). No, not the popular Deadpool but Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry Dead Pool. Of course, before that there's Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer and Sudden Imapact first all about another San Francisco cop named Harry Callahan. Of course, the first, Dirty Harry is mentioned in David Fincher's Zodiac movie.
The Delivery boy they stole the bicycle/wagon from was actually Ryan O'Neal's son or younger brother...I wasn't clear on that.

Haha really? Hmm... maybe this needs trying out. I've seen a few film scenes with floating VW bugs now and they've all been floating... maybe they were on to something!
@@MoviesWithMarty Oh yes really. That's why the car floating is a joke in the movie. This is like Louis throwing the bottle of Vichy Water in the garbage at the end of Casablanca, which young reactors don't even notice. The Vichy government was made up of collaborators, and Louis has helped the Germans for the last time. In 1941 no one in the audience would have missed that. So much is forgotten.

It kind of surprised me seeing several actors who also appeared in Mel Brooks' movies. Also recognized the actor who played the sidekick to the bad guy in "The Muppet Movie" - 1979 (rich guy - who ended up with Madeline Kahn's character). For more Streisand - recommending "Hello Dolly"

Yes! Great idea! How could they have missed it? Crashing the Dragon into a Chinese Restaurant...funny as hell. The Volkswagen Beetle floating in the water was a joke of the day...people claimed they could float the car on water, and if Senator Ted Kennedy had only driven one he wouldn't not have downed his ""girlfriend" when he went off the bridge in the fog at night. Ted survived...it was a big scandal
Can some film studio make a Judy Maxwell and Howard Banister Universe? I want to see prequels and sequels, people!! I want to see the background on Judy and all her zany exploits! :)
