  • We performed this medieval dance, Saltarello, at our Celebration of Yuletide concert on 4th December 2022, in Warrandyte, Victoria.
There is no existing choreography dating from the medieval era for this dance (or indeed any dance, as far as I am aware). We based the choreography of our version of Saltarello on an interpretation by the Lithuanian group Saltus Gladii, led here by our dancer Molly O'Donnell.
All the dancers bar one were newcomers to our performance group in 2022!
Music performed by the Early Music Consort of Melbourne
Dancers: The Courtly Arts Performers of Victoria (formerly Ripponlea Dancers)
The Courtly Arts Performers of Victoria are an Australian performance group, comprising dancers formerly known as the Ripponlea Renaissance and Baroque dancers, and the Early Music Consort of Melbourne.

The music is medieval, but the dance was created by members of the Society for Creative Anachronism. It has become traditional among reenactors, but it is 20th century traditional.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.
We credited the Lithuanian dance group in our description, as that is where we first saw this dance. I agree, as there is no existing choreography from the medieval period, any modern interpretations of medieval dances have to be considered as such.

I used to learn Renaissance dance from Helga Hill, so glad to see their work isn’t gone even after Helga and Mark retired!

I envy you. I always wanted to learn to dance like that. I'm glad people like you are still trying to preserve the tradition.
