    Sad. Went to the stadium in 95 and saw the Pirates play the Astros.
    We sat in the upper deck where the tv monitors were and my cousin turned off one of the tv's with a remote control watch. One of the employees there tried to turn the tv back on, but was never able to.

    I remember watching this on TV...the most pertinent thing that stood out to me was the silence after the implosion. Just silence. It really signified the end of a very memorable era for me and probably others in Pittsburgh history. Heinz and PNC park just aren't the same...Three Rivers was awesome...happy I got to see some Pirates games there. Live in New York City now...Brooklyn to be exact but I still show love to the burgh.

    • @ralphralpherson9441
      @ralphralpherson9441 Před 2 lety +3

      Actually, I've heard that three-rivers was suffering from sagging foundation from being so close to the river. I've seen estimates that it would have cost significantly more to renovate as the entire infrastructure would need stripped and rebuilt, that costs a lot more because of all the man hours. You'd have several months of labor to pay before you even did the first thing to build the new venue. Hence, blow it up and building a new one was cheaper. And besides, who can argue that PNC park isn't gorgeous? We consistently place among the TOP 5 baseball venues in the nation in every major sports publication. And that view! I'll never forget my first few games at PNC and how I spent half the game just looking at the great view of dahntahn. Besides, the pirates sucked for most of the 2000s anyhow, may as well have a nice backdrop to look at for the Zambelli fireworks. 🤣

    So, true story, my buddy and I had drove down..er, dahn to (perhaps to this exact vantage point) and parked at like 6:00am so we could be sure not to miss the implosion. We packed coffee, snacks, and a 2-hose hukkah that we were fond of at the time and in the pre-dawn boredom, decided to get baked out of minds for the implosion. This was a bad idea because we subsequently fell asleep in the car. LOL... it was probably just 1 minute before implosion, we were awoken by a kind stranger rapping loudly on our windshield. We awoke with a startle and looked at a mid-30s looking guy staring at us through the windshield as he yelled "ITS HAPPENIN', THEYRE GONNA DO IT, Y'INZ WAS SLEEPIN', WAKE UP" and we promptly rubbed our eyes, got out of our pot-reeking car and ran to the fence. The second we got to the fence overlooking the stadium, the sucker blew up real good. (although I don't remember the fireworks, but apparently from this video, there were some) So its been 20+ years and we are now in our 40s and live a cleaner lifestyle, but regardless THANK YOU kind stranger. Thank you for not allowing two stoners in a gold Pontiac Sunfire to sleep through this momentus occasion. I still remember seeing Bucko games with my parents in 3-rivers... it was a Pittsburgh Institution.

    I can tell you it's often more expensive to renovate an existing structure than to build a new one. You have to tear out the existing building infrastructure on an existing structure and then replace it. That's far more delicate work than just building a new building.
