  • Computer scientist and futurist Jaron Lanier has a plan to fix the internet. This Silicon Valley maverick has a radical vision for how we can all earn money from our data.
    Every time you click on a website -- yes, even that ad right there -- a company is keeping a little bit of your information, and someone somewhere is making money off of it.
    Lanier argues that every bit of data out there belongs to the person who created it, and if anyone should be getting paid for it, it's you. He has a plan to make this happen.

      freedom dividend is quite literally welfare capitalism, aka social democracy (capitalism with a social safety net), which in some sense can be referred to as socialism (if one considers the etymology of the term and doesn't just pick their favorite definition from google). I would argue it would simply be a bandaid on a much bigger problem, would further prevent wage increases and probably just placate the masses even more.
      Your comment makes you sound like a social democrat which would align more with Bernie Sanders, who has spent his entire career trying to save capitalism by strengthening the safety net.

    "Data is the new oil."
    Yep, and we already live in ever-increasing data/message pollution, heading straight for the Dystopia Jaron describes.(If we're not already there)
    What we easily forget about Information is that it requires Energy to create, store and transport. Jarons plan sounds nice but it will just increase the huge amounts of energy already needed to run the Net, by adding another cascade of data energy from every single Info-event. Data centres use huge amounts of power, adding to the overall energy-use bill, and inevitably adding proportional heat to the system. Apple wanted to build a data centre in Ireland which would have used as much power as Dublin, the largest city of 1.5 million people....! ?
    Haven't even mentioned how financial Power will act as it always does....to maintain itself, like banks, corporations seeking monopoly
    Or the possible adverse mental health effects.
    Remember the opening scene of Johnny Mnemonic where people were twitching and jerking from NAS(Nerve Attenuation Syndrome), or Information Overload....?

      @@Edvontinkleberg Even worse, with everybody selling data companies would pay less for it. Also, companies like exclusivity of data, it's the only major difference companies can have nowadays (explains Amazon failure in China, Apple behind Google in maps...). So they would offer it but with more controls and monitoring over user activity.

These nerds in the comments are all cozy and middleclass and life has never really sucked for them. They think society is made up completely of other people like them. While the vast majority of people have had enough experience with life's hardships to realize the difficulties there would be implementing something even remotely close to this. It's pathetic. This is a distraction to make people feel better about doing nothing.

    Your data is like oil is a great analogy because for 99.999% of the world, there's little we could do with either. Unless you know how to find, extract, refine and distribute oil, it's not of much value (hence the pools of middle east oil on the ground ignored for most of human history). Same for that data. And you do get something for the data...the "entertainment/communications/other" of the platforms where you give it in exchange for something.
    When you click on a LIKE button, you didn't create the data. They company that set it up and record your action created the data. It's as if he's brilliant and a fool. Pretending that smart guys like him have the answers for all of humanity is the ignorance of believing others will protect you and you don't have to be smart or productive or innovative.

    • @gemelwalters2942
      @gemelwalters2942 Před 3 lety

      your comment in fact sounds foolish. the company that set up and recorded the action has already been paid by simply getting your attention. That's how marketing works...you get paid regardless of whether someone likes or buys anything. You think facebook doesn't get paid because I don't interact with an Ad or like a pic. So rather than trying to insult the man let's hear your brilliant idea? The moment you then interact with that picture, with that ad, you're providing additional data that can now be sold and so on and so on. If ppl got anything of worth from facebook or twitter the platforms wouldn't be free, it'd be at a cost. What's being sold is your attention, you are the product not the consumer.
