    **PIGMENT NOTE** Schmincke confirmed there is a typo on Haze Black and it should be PB36 Cobalt Green Turquoise not PG36 Phthalo Green noted on the tube. Each ingredient is granulating. Another tube from a previous release also had a typo (saying PBr233 vs PR233). I'll make a note on my site and update the card there. 170+ Schmincke Horadam Aquarell swatch cards, 1 year lightfast test and written review for the pro grade watercolor range can be found at www.kimcrick.com/pages/schmincke-horadam-watercolor-review-color-chart-lightfast-testing

    Ohhh, idk about this anymore. These are pretty mixes, and I personally got some ideas from them as I own separate pigments, but that’s getting old already and it feels like artificial expanding of colour range. It would be nice if they introduced new pigments either as a standalone pigment or in this supergranulating series to diversify or make more unique these new releases. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who appreciate premixed paints such as these, but I’m wary of situations where manufacturer expands colour range at the expense of already released pigments in such quantities as supergranulating series.

    • @aremedyproject9569
      @aremedyproject9569 Před 2 lety

      Can’t really blame them tho. They’re trying to increase market share. Buyers often purchase on impulse for the beauty of the mixes. I’ve been guilty of this. Also, many people don’t mix their own paints; maybe because they don’t want to dedicate the time, or they’re happy just using the premixed. And that’s ok too. It does take time to do your own exploring. Some may enjoy that, while others encounter frustration. Presently, I’m trying to be all about exploring. One aspect I enjoy about watercolours is the happy surprises. With the expense involved, though, I’m still learning to have courage! It’s too bad guilt can get in the way of progress, but that’s part of letting perfectionism go so that joy can enter. Cheers from Ottawa🇨🇦☺️

    Your site is a constant help. I need to mix these colors because I am vegan and most Schmincke paints contains oxgall. I spent a day drawing up a table of the pigments in each of the supergranulating colors and realized how so few colors are heavily relied upon to make these sets and that there is a lot of overlap between them. Shocking really. I agree that with PBk11 and PB29 you can make so many of these. I'm trusting in my Daniel Smith to get me there. Thank you for the information!

      I’m not that surprised. To me PB29 is the quintessential granulating pigment. it is so ubiquitous in the art world, it’s so difficult to avoid it. To me, when someone says granulating, I think of PB29 and PB28 by default.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety +2

      @@awatercolourist PB29 is definitely useful and common, but it feels like they are abusing it a bit because it's so cheap. They've got over 20 granulating options, including several similar blues PB28/PB74 to play with. I'm sure part of it has to be cost effectiveness and that blue in general sells really well so if they make a bunch of slightly different takes on it there's still a lot of demand :)

    Thank you so much for this video and all your hard work!! I'm not as put together so my swatching is typically done on one single sheet with lines to separate them of course and the black line to check opacity and I'll drip water back in to check what the blooms look like or the granulation...but I'm just an older lady and has been teaching myself to draw and paint...basically anything I can afford to get my hands on. Helps so much with my chronic pain from RA and many other things I don't want to bore you with. So I LOVE being able to watch beautiful art being made especially on the, more often then not, days when my body decides to not work with me. But being able to watch and learn and be inspired helps me stay in a good state of mind and not go down the rabbit hole ;) so I appreciate it very much!!
    I love how detailed these cards are! Not sure my hands will work with me long enough to do it, but I'd love to try. Another artist, Kimberly Hylton does something similar but makes hers business card sized and then is able to buy those plastic binder card holders to keep them organized which I loved!! With both of these ways, as opposed to my lazy way, I LOVE being able to pick up different colors to look at right next to each other and also if you add a color you can still put it next to similar colors not just on another sheet of paper making it difficult to truly compare. I'll definitely have to work out a way to do this in a way that it won't kill my hands. But honestly, chips or pages of swatches is so beautiful I feel its a piece of art in itself. My mom wanted photos of my swatch page because she fell in love with all the boxes of color and textures. I feel the same. So fun!!
    I just use W&N cotman as it's all I can afford and even then must save for a new tube when out...and even with those I love mixing the colors and watching as it moves and changes and sometimes dries beautiful, sometimes not...but always learning :) sorry for the long note...my body isn't up for much, so just get excited to watch fun, beautiful videos to think of thing to try when I get a good day :)
    So thank you very much!!

      I agree, swatch charts are like pieces of art and are beautiful to flip through in a binder. I use a 3-ring binder to store my cards as well. Page protector sheets are available for 2"x2" "coin" collector size, business cards, trading cards or popular photo sizes too. I like the smaller coin cards because I can fit more color swatches per page - a real help for anyone who has collected too many paints lol. You have so many great video's its hard to choose :) but I truly appreciate the massive efforts you put in to sharing this amazing info!! I probably already said, but I've just been teaching myself in my older age with a lot of chronic health issues which makes it hard to practice as much as I'd like....but just doing simple swatches is invigorating...even watching someone else, on these particularly bad days, is also awesome! I don't know a ton, especially all the terms, but I loved how you showed your full breakdown of what you did in each box of your swatch to cover it all. I believe you mentioned having a video that showed that more in depth, and I thought I saw you using a stamp for the lines? So hopefully when I watch that video I'll learn more because my hands give out in me very easily, so something like that would make a world of difference rather then the whole ruler, ink, ruler, ink for every tiny box. Your store is AMAZING!! we're in a kinda beyond rough place financially right now with my health stuff plus lack of work, like so many, but this is absolutely on my list of things I need to save for. Such good prices too! Especially those 2 for the swatches. And that I could use them for my acrylic as well...never occurred to me, I again, just made swatches and mixes on a sheet of paper but could never get enough info to remember everything. And again, being able to see similar colors side by side I think will help me a ton with my mixing which I truly enjoy, but sometimes I think something looks cool when its warm, or vice versa, to me...dumb I know...but seeing them, as dry paint, right next to each other might help. So, I need to find a way to get those 2 stamps...will help my hands SO much!! Then I could just do the fun part with the same pain. Typically I'd draw all my lines and my hands would be so stiff and cramped that it could be a week before I could actually use my hands well enough paint on them. So this would help that so much! I've struggled this year deciding if I should put more frequent videos out that don't burn me out with the effort they take. I fear no one will enjoy these types of videos with no voice over, or that no one would watch it if I just uploaded a limited palette painting session instead of a product review. • @hannahthufvesson
      @hannahthufvesson Před 2 lety +1

      @@KimberlyCrick I can imagine. I have ME and while I'm not making videos, I certainly Can relate to overwhelm, exhaustion and burnout. In my personal opinion, the kindest thing we can do for others is to take care of ourselves. I am prone to having high expectations on myself, also because that's what gets me excited (and I love details), and since that's my starting point I have learned that I pretty much always have to conciously choose to take the gentlest path with myself - the one that brings _My Body_ a sigh of relief or a feeling of being mischievous since I'm "shirking responsibility" (self imposed). It's usually also the same path that I feel equals "doing too little" or something along those lines, so I'm working on adjusting my perspective.
      So if you ask me, I would 100% support and encourage you making videos that bring joy and ease. I would _love_ to see limited palette painting sessions from you - I want to see all the beautiful colors you have swatched for us in action ☺️
      And as for what others may think, it would surprise me greatly if people wouldn't also love other types of videos from you. And after much work on the subject I have come to the personal conclusion that it is deeply okay to disappoint people. It's allowed. Our well being, our joy and what is sustainable to us is so incredibly important, and you don't owe us any specific types of videos, or, more importantly, your health.
      What helps me with doing that is creating a "frame of expectations" of sorts, to prepare people. So, using your idea as an example, that might look like sharing with us that you are going to start another type of series that can accompany your product reviews, in a different format, perhaps without a voice over. Sometimes I want to tell people the reasons behind it, or my hopes and goals, and other times those are just for me.
      I hope I didn't speak completely out of turn now, and just gave you a buch of advice that just felt wrong and invasive or something else bad - of so, I apologise.
      I think I might be a bit overly passionate about people taking care of themselves, and my advice-giving side is strong (I'm working on it). So please just ignore this if it doesn't feel good for you!
      On another note, I thought of you the other day! I've been setting up a palette and I have the Daniel Smith Manganese Blue Hue in it, and I added a little bit of Kremer's Zirconium Cerulean to it, which made it granulate even more and still keep it's vibrancy! • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety +3

      @@madametj I wonder if there is a typo on the tube and it was meant to read PB36, as they state that every ingredient is a granulating one and all of these use the same core group of ingredients. There was another tube I got with a typo before, PR233 I think was mislabeled as PBr instead of PR for Glacier Green. I have a strong suspicion this is an error, as there is no hint of smooth inky phthalo green in this, so they would have had to use such a small amount not to flow out from other colors. I'll make a note about it and check with them.

      As I continue comparing my favorite pigments by brand (and by how much they fade in my 1 year lightfast test results) I'll keep posting videos about a particular color at a time. Then I add the recommendations to my top lightfast pigments list and once I've got a pretty well researched list I'll break it down in gran and non gran in a video. Happy painting :)

    Ty. Excellent watch as always. Quick note about br7/y43 which might be of interest for matching the mixes. Schmincke has two br7/y43. Raw sienna (not marked as granulating) and raw umber (marked as granulating).

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety +1

      The Raw Sienna is just as (or lack thereof) textural as their Raw Umber, they may have just not marked it as such. There's a few pigments they don't mark as granulating, despite have minor texture. I noticed that the color more closely matches the Sienna for the DIY mixing as it is more PY43/yellow leaning. Though in general yellow color separation is improved with non to less granulating pigments paired with granulating, though in this case these pigments in any variety from any brand will do very similar things. I'm really hoping that one day they branch out into mixtures with non granulating colors so they can all more actively separate instead of clump together. To keep things simple with Haze Blue it's a shortcut to use a convenience mixture, but it's likely more accurate to tinker with all 3 single pigments to get the color ratios right. Raw Sienna will just get you there faster.

    On the back of the box it mentions a Volcano, Desert, and Shire series! 😱 Also I really think the PG36 could be accurate because the box said that there are at least two granulating colors in each paint which doesn't necessarily mean all the colors will be granulating, and there were two other colors in Haze Black that were both granulating

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety +3

      I'm interested to see how different they manage to make the 3 sets we haven't seen yet! Everything I've read seems to indicate that they are only combining granulating colors, but I read that minimum 2 thing as a different way to say there are at least 2 ingredients in each tube (3 would be 3 granulating pigments etc.). I'm not sure if they are going a new direction with the new sets though. That would honestly be exciting if it is going to include non-granulating ones! I sent them an email, I'll let you know what I find out :)

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety +2

      They confirmed all granulating and it’s pb36 instead of pg36. Wish I had noticed before the video, but I’ll atleast note it in the comments and card on my site. On the bright side pg36 would provide more color separation which diy mixers may enjoy!

      I agree, it's getting crazy redundant. I'm hoping the more I mention the single pigment DIY mixing and show how similar most of the colors are it may persuade some to skip what feels more and more like a cash-grab marketing gimmick. I am incredibly disappointed that 3 of these colors didn't even have notable color separation. They don't feel special or hard to mix and I feel a bit mislead because they were advertised as "complex" and prone to displaying multiple color characteristics. I will totally be mixing Haze pink though and appreciate looking through all the colors as an inspiration guide! Happy painting :)

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety +12

      I feel like this series is getting pretty redundant, but I really appreciate them for mixing idea inspiration. If you're going to invest in any Schmincke I highly recommend getting just a couple colors that only they make - that way they will feel more special in your collection. I didn't really care for their standard colors, since they weren't unique enough to justify the higher price vs a set like Rubens/PExcellent. I do however LOVE the rare pigment PBr33 Mahoghany Brown, PV62 Cob Vio Hue as an alternative to Ultramarine Violet and their French Ultramarine PB29 is the most textural highly granulating version of Ultra Blue I've ever seen! The color mixing potential in just those 3 continues to inspire me after playing with so many pigments. If you don't have another brand of Potters Pink PR233 (DSmith/RSzmal/Winsor/Maimeri) it's also used in some of my favorite of these Schmincke mixtures :)

    Not sure how Schmincke seem to keep having misprints on their labels... And, of course, I would only reccommend buying any of these mixes if you use a LOT of any particular mix. However, with all the colours they have launched lately, they have been very open about the pigments they use which is more than you can say for another major brand. Imho the series are supposed to appeal to different artists since other brands proved that there is a market for sets with "inspiring" names. Only brand nerds would buy all sets, I guess. And you, so thank you for your public service! 🥰😘

    Those colours look awesome, just as your little doodle paintings do. Will probably not get any of them though, because they are actually pretty expensive here in Germany, I don't want to add too many cobalts to my set and - as you pointed out here - they are made with their regular pigments, of which ai got a whole bunch on my palette anyway ^^'
    P.S. I wonder why they call them 'haze'? That "Nebel" in the German name translates to fog, but maybe haze just sounds nicer 😅

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety +1

      I suppose maybe they wanted to use a word to hint at colors that could "obscure" or hide a subject, fuzzy unclear lighting, not limited to fog and just picked haze as the best word maybe? I definitely agree with mixing their regular single pigments for these, I can't see myself using these often enough to justify a whole tube of each. Haze Pink is a pretty mixture idea though :)

  • @waymire01
    @waymire01 Před 2 lety +1

    I'm ok with them continuing to put them out.. since they are honest about what they are and some people really love to collect them. Personally they motivated me to set up my pure pigment granulating palette and play.. not just combinations they have found but others. It actually helped my mixing skills substantially trying to work out what the combinations will to do make what I want. For example this new blue where the raw sienna comes out as a yellow separate from the blue with no green mix. Perfect for sky, it's so difficult to get that pop of yellow without coming up with either green or grey. One of my favorite self mixtures was a very subtle yet beautiful combo of titanium buff with either potters pink or cerulean blue. It reminds me of sandstone in paint form and makes a beautiful background with character of it's own but that doesn't overwhelm the main subject. My favorite thing to do with these granulating mixtures is backgrounds by far.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  Před 2 lety

      Agreed, great for backgrounds! They did confirm pb36 not pg36 in haze black too. Yeah there’s a lot of support for convenience mixtures, i just hope the other few sets coming will be a bit more varied.

  • @lurklingX
    @lurklingX Před 2 lety

    idk why schmincke didn't put more effort into making all of the colors in each set unique. seems like consumers would be more likely to try to buy ALL of them if there weren't duplicates (basically). one of the browns you showed had a deeper masstone almost black than another one. at least that is a difference. but MAN some of them are same same same. like the differences are equivalent to just painting something out using a little more or less water or getting more granulation or masstone. sometimes i just don't understand what SCH is thinking....
