VERY interesting video Alan. Thanks for posting. I look forward to the second part. The slotted wick intrigued me. Feeding the wick into the tube looks a bit tricky. I think I saw one with multiple holes and a screw on end cap - that would make it easier. It's interesting that the slot flame is invisible, suggesting it has better combustion, in addition to the broader flame output - and hence hotter. Your purple metho looks way cool, better than our clear stuff. Amazing how many old and new model engines are for sale on Ebay. Interest must be strong with this subject. I just happened to see an older Mamod engine same as this one on Gumtree today for $160 AU (near me) and wondered if that was a good buy ? Seems to be a long run and popular model. Cheers Rob
Hi Rob. Glad that you found it interesting, I doubt there will be many views on these, kind of a specialist subject. The burner that you asked the question about is featured in Part Two which will be up in a day or so. Having made a few copies of the Bowman and Luton Bowman type burners I can confirm that getting the wick into the tube is great fun!! I cover another vapourising burner in Part 3 I think, that also has a near invisible flame. My theory is that these are just burning meths vapour with no impurities. The burners which use wicks have a more visible flame because a very tiny amount of the wick material is also burning. That doesn't sound like a bad deal on the older Mamod engine. If you want to get an idea of prices have a search on the UK version of ebay for 'Mamod' there will be many engines for sale on there. Cheers, Alan.
Thank you very much for this very complete video ! I want to run the meccano steam engine with the very first burner you showed there, and it remains only one question after seeing this video : how do you extinguish the burner once you've done with it ? Thank you by advance !
Thanks. Normally you would just blow the flame out but it can be equally as well extinguished by placing a flat piece of metal over the top of the burner.
I saw something where someone said they renewed the wadding in the uk burner. I also something that said the burners are filled with asbestos 😮😮😮 can you advise?
@@bill_ Methylated spirits are the same the world over, mainly ethanol. White spirits can be made of a variety of different things but they are usually petroleum products. Which means that white spirits are more flammable.
I am surprised that you seem to have so few views, these are interesting topics. not covered well elsewhere. I hope you are a follower of Kieth Appleton as he would be useful t o you.

Good review on burners.I have a early 50s se1 flat base with no burner.Can you use a 2 or a 3 wick setup?😊

I believe that some of the very old burners used asbestos but most of them use a cotton based wick material.

No, I've never tried that, might have to give it ago.

Yes. The idea of the wadding is that there is no liquid inside the burner to spill so it is a safety device.
