Yeah, they appear... underrated, compared to some pop names and rap titles... but that's because... they're real. All their songs are real. All their fans are real. That's what "the real" big time looks like. Fuck janet jackson and jz and all the zombies that drop a penny for fake sht.
Hexum is without a doubt most underrated melody writer of the last 20 years. Pick this song apart....Listen to the bass during the first 2 versus. BRILLIANT 100% SO MUCH POWER AND MOVEMENT.
i'm 38 and they will always have a place in my heart. i found out about them when i was a little younger than you. Ben their first three albums (Music, Grassroots, and Blue) are amazing. i prefer all their older music to the new stuff but a lot of their new stuff has some great production to it. the older stuff is raw and made for GREAT live performances.
This is one of my songs I can listen to way more than once. A lot of 311 songs have that "hook" that makes you want to listen to it over and over. Especially in summer lol funny they are from Nebraska they are the best beach music ever in my opinion
This song was my gateway drug into 311! Memphis had a great new alternative rock radio station that was like two years old around the time this song was released. One day they play this song on the station, the first single form the album. I queue up the old cassette deck and wait for it to get played again. I tape it and become obsessed with it. But they didn't say who it was on the radio! If they did I missed getting that on tape. I didn't know who the band was. Anyways all the cool kids in my high school could not stop talking about this band 311. One day some cute preppy girl asks some alterna-punker kid in my photography class what 311 sounded like and what made them so cool. "Why is everyone talking about them?" He says "Because they are the dope shit dude! They are rap and rock and funk and punk and whatever ah ha ha! They have this song 'Don't Say Home'.. it's phat as hell!" He then hums some of the song and bingo! It's the song I taped! I know who my mystery band is, and lo and behold I knew why everyone was talking about them. I promptly got the blue album on cassette because it was out of stock everywhere on cd believe it or not! Wore that tape out. The station then played All Mixed Up. And then I saw the video for Down before hearing the song and it was all over mTV.. next thing ya knew even the preppy girl was rocking that album. But it was this song I heard just as I started playing the drums and that Chad Sexton drum break and opening groove just floored me.
I loved this song in 1995 and still love it today - and I'm not a pothead...I'm 50 YO and a professional drummer...311 gets the little hairs on the back of my neck standing up at attention...and sometimes they even dance too!!!
I discovered this band about a month ago. I'm 14 and find them amazing. The positive vibes are awesome and the one of a kind sound they have is so distinct from the others, even in the 90s.
They sounded unique even back then, I'm 35. I heard the song "Down" when I was 13. Picked up the guitar because of that song. Been playing for 23 years now. Glad you like this music kid!! Instead of the autotune whatever it's called😝
One of my favorite 311 songs. This reminds me of being a kid at camp, jamming out to their self titled album on my cassette player and headphones. And I keep expecting to hear DLMD automatically after this song ends. Awww!
Man I have known this band for a while. Like I would listen to them on the radio, but I never knew it was them cause I was just a kid. I'm just now finding them out again but I'm loving every song I'm listening. I'm a new fan for sure. Sorry I learned about them so late...
I think when this video came out is when I started to have a big crush on NIck Hexum...he was at his peak of young cuteness...especially with those goggles...Anyhow, I also think this song is ONE OF the 90's CLASSICS, and the Quintessential Anthem of 311..."Don't stay home this time...Don't say NNNooooooooooo..We don't have to. We don't want to." Years later no song comes close to capturing the spirit of this song and just the tune. When I sing it to myself, I go back in time to being 18...in college...feeling positive about life and freeee...wut a time.
Takes me back to being 13 and listening to this cassette over and over and over. (Yes, I said cassette. How many of you remember those?) FEELS SO GOOD to be DOWN for life!!!!
311 is about as anti-DS/cabal of a musical act as has ever existed. I mean, they named an album DTOM five years before the Tea Party was even a thing. They're among the few who've made it to those heights without selling their souls to get there.
This makes me smile. I was looking at people during the duration of this song and they were singing the song in sync. It was a Great moment frozen in time accompanied by a Great performance from 311.
First favorite band in 95-96 when I was 10 thanks to MTV playing down. Just now discovering this video after being obsessed with this song and album for years. What a trip. Happy quarantine 2020 folks.
I've been trying to get my buddy to hear the steel drum in the background for years, and he just can't hear it. It makes me feel nuts! The steel drum plays the same notes as what Nick is singing. Especially @2:05 and onward. It's there during the whole song, but the end section is the loudest. It pounds the notes that Nick sings in the final chorus. It sounds so tropical! Does anyone else hear it? Especially @2:21. I always wondered if Chad overdubbed it himself.
@@sammythewhammy666 enjoy that youth, kiddo. lol;) 25 to 40 goes by faster than i can put into words. i was 25 yesterday. now im almost 41. enjoy the little things!
This right here- with the right system, bumps the back seat and I suggest top down ( of the car) when possible. One of the several rockin' songs on that CD.
Don't know how they do it, but with 311 the most metal-y songs of theirs start off in a pretty happy tone (for metal) but they somehow make the songs even happier -like this one, or transistor- without ever feeling forced, only band I've seen do something like that
I had such a big 311 phase in grade 12. Reminds me of my morning walks to school. Albeit it wasn't that long ago, but nostalgia hits in waves. 2020 was a shit year.
This is REQUIRED LISTENING every year on March 11!
criminally underrated. 311 is dope as hell
depeched mode yessss ❤️
Oh hell yeah
they played all there stuff on the radio all thew the 90s and early 2000s i dont think thats underrated
They headlined many a concert in their prime and still draw in large crowds of loyal fans, no way.
Yeah, they appear... underrated, compared to some pop names and rap titles... but that's because... they're real. All their songs are real. All their fans are real. That's what "the real" big time looks like. Fuck janet jackson and jz and all the zombies that drop a penny for fake sht.
I love their positive vibes. It helped me through some dark times in my life when every other message in my life was negative.
Carsten same with me
Damn right !!
Me too! I listen to a lot of bands but 311 are the only band that can make be feel better when I'm down
Come back, we miss you.
STRAIGHT UP FEEL GOOD MUSIC, GOLDFINGER IS ANOTHER ONE THAT'S GOOD FOR THAT

you are in for a treat.
Couldn't agree more with Peppers but I'd add Transistor to the list as well. Totally changed my outlook.
how old are u again?
welcome friend. you still digging them?
I'm 44. My favorite band 😍... been following them since they came out. Timelessness 💕
I’m 47 and with you man. 311 is one of my best memories growing up
40 and still listening, seen them 5 times
One of my Favorites from 311!!!! “Hey don’t break the mold kid, just eat around it!”
that line is truly a command to live by
these boys taught me to stay positive and love life when I was young and needed a sence of direction. Glad I got to meet them. coolest guys ever.
So many awesome memories when this came out. love this band

Yeah I have been listening to down over and over again lately lol
20 years from the blue album and sounds better than many albums today : )
I completely agree. Born in 90 and still listen to the greats (Sublime, 311, The Ziggens, etc.). Of course, all my opinion.
Hell yeah it does! lol.. friggin' Beiber!
Raul Ache wow you suck at searching for good music. You struck dumb luck once and never again

Evan Schweppe Check out Deftones and Incubus as well.
Evan Schweppe
Indeed! Good ear, kid!
Evan Schweppe Some bands that are like 311 are Sublime, and Incubus. I'd most definitely say to check them out.
Dear Evan,
It was the same when they burst out on to the scene. They sounded so fresh and fun. Take care!
They sounded unique even back then, I'm 35. I heard the song "Down" when I was 13. Picked up the guitar because of that song. Been playing for 23 years now. Glad you like this music kid!! Instead of the autotune whatever it's called😝
Damn, that and so many 311 songs mean a lot to me still. I love recycling great stuff, such a good vibe!
I saw 311 live at Earthday Birthday and I just have to say they were amazing. S.A. Martinez dancing was pretty epic too.
Every year I've seen them, including 311 day, they put on a fantastic show. Great crowds and environment.
My fav band!!! Positivity flowing wayyyy before we needed it like we do now.
311 got me through the psych ward.
This is the first CD I bought (along with Rancid) in 8th grade. I still love it!
Don't Stay Home! We don't have to, We don't want to!
0:44 - 1:01 is such an amazing section. The video goes PERFECTLY with the music
so underrated. what a tune!
Who would of thought, 25 years later this song is more relevant than ever!

311!! Saw yall here in San Antonio at the Majestic!! Badass show!! THANKS!!! Love you guys!!
311 day 2022, I didn't stay home this time! Vegas, baby!
Fan for life! Soundsystem and Transistor are tied for me, personally.
Transistor is #1 😁

easily one of my top 3 favorite songs by 311... makes me excited even when theres nothing to be excited about!
i love this song SO MUVH
VHS is a bygone format but you gotta love the warmness in the color that it gave to videos like this.
90's best decade
Chad Sexton Reppin' OCDP! I sure do miss those drums, they were killer!
The snare drum sounds especially during those era's! Even tho it's all in Chad's technique, produced some awesome tones!
He's a master at those little ghost note diddles, so clean, excellent dynamics, a metronome
Favorite band of all time. That says a lot.
I Remember being in my mommas womb at listening to this . ahhhhh the good ol days
311 - a "Please Stay home" version would be great in times of covid19 in 2020!
