Welcome back to the Foxhole -not cats here- 🦊🤘
Megitsune is one of the most challenging song in terms of vocals, SuMetal said that she didn't mastered yet, you can find some fancams when she's doing sound check before live shows with this song while on tour.
Kitsune fellas like Grington300 already explained you about this song and meaning. So let's follow with something else.
Like we already told you BabyMetal was created as a "metal dance unit" group, or you can saiy "supergroup", all behind SuMetal powerful voice and stage presence.
In order to create something new, like the kawaii metal genre they created, you need to do something new that has never be done before. BabyMetal is intended to be enjoy as a full experience, narrative, music and visually, they even got a complete lore which tells the mission of our girls here on earth, of course part of this is to help the girls to protect their private life, so enjoying their music is one of the aspect you can enjoy from them but that's not the full experience, is like experience a movie with only audio sound, that's not the way with BabyMetal, the studio album is fine and decent but when they really shine is when you see them performing with a live band, and trust me if you read someone saying they're not enjoying that is because clearly know nothing about them and their stories.
They're dancers and performers, sometimes the lyrics on songs requires from them to change that "happy" mood on their faces, of course there might be some exceptions here and there, like the previous night when the two of them got an accident, one of them falling from the stage (YuiMetal) and the other one hurting her ankle (MoaMetal) you can't hide your pain easily when that happen, low key they still go on with some smiling but that shows the level of professionalism they had even at such a young age (14 yo).
I enjoy a lot of metal bands, I know some of them even before BabyMetal, perhaps it was easy for me to get what they're doing and loving them because I always love dance choreography and I see the beauty aspect on express with your body language, and oh boy they know how to do that unlike any other group I remember, they incorporated many japanese elements on this song, like the instrumental but also the dance during breakdown, you can clearly see that if you watch the official MV, and also the pig squeals are more clear there but the heaviness of Kami Band instrumentals hide that backing track a little bit during live performance like this.
Lastly I'm glad that many bands and fans cover BM songs but it's unfair to compare them with SuMetal's voice, you can clearly hear the difference here between a grown up woman with an already vast knowledge about music and vocal techs and a 16 yo girl with powerful piercing teenage voice but still learning vocal techs, if you listen recent Megitsune version you can here SuMetal's voice evolved a lot more, fortunately she doesn't sing with those vibratos I don't like much here on their songs at least.
Thanks for keep coming back and hope to see more of your BabyMetal journey, no any other cover needed. Peace 🦊🤘

Pre late 2017 it was the original trio of Su, Moa, and Yui. Late 2017 Yui stopped performing due to health issues and eventually left the group. Briefly BM performed as a duo with just Su and Moa. I forget the year, but they eventually added a third person just to dance in Yui's old spot. The third person is referred to as an Avenger and is one of three you ladies who rotate in and out of that spot. Also to note, I believe the song you referenced Akatsune is o e of four solos Su does.

I have nothing bad to say about Nemophila. Great band, but I would put them in the same category as every other metal band. Babymetal is their own unique thing. It's impossible and pointless to compare them with other metal bands. They are in their own universe (their own metal galaxy?), separate from all the others. I used to get caught up in the 'Babymetal is metal/not metal arguments but it really doesn't matter. Even Babymetal doesn't stress that they are absolutely a metal band. They're not pop, they're not metal. They're Babymetal. I think people on the fence with them would appreciate them more if they stopped worrying about that and just enjoyed the show.

Honestly, I may be a relatively new 'metalhead', but i never understood that whole, "why is there dancing in this?".
It's a lot like just headbanging, the moves are expresssing the feel of the song, especially once you get into the lyrics, and while I myself most certainly wouldn't dance like that, I love that they are. Music, singing and dance together are what makes all of Babymetal work (for me)... 女は女優よ 🤭

    • @GlassMoonGaming
      @GlassMoonGaming  Před 2 lety +1

I think the difference in MY mind at least, is that headbanging usually isn't a coordinated dance. I would imagine most people who say that at first (including me when I first heard them years ago) were wondering why there were boyband type coordinated dance performances in a fire metal song. LOL Once you sit down and watch though and take more in, understanding the background of the band, it makes sense in it's own way

      @@GlassMoonGaming Fair enough.
Obviously there is a qualitative difference, i merely meant that windmilling, headbanging and other moves in fact are pretty much coordinated as well, you are usually moving to the beat (exept that one rhythmically challanged guy; there always has to be someone who just doesn't get the beat right :P ). So while I, too, am not really one to actually dance, it is rather difficult not to move at all when you actually are enjoying a song. 😁

Nice, Nemophila did Megitsune good. Not into the dance is not a bad thing, not everyone is into dancing. But dance is part of Babymetal because they are more like a rock opera broadway show, more than a regular rock concert....Their dance is interpretative dance of what they're singing, which is probably something Japanese audience would instinctively "get" better than us western audiences. And ofcourse, you have the dance moves of Yui and Moa, who are the hypewomen/cheerleaders, and their dance moves are the ones the fans are to follow. I tell my friends Babymetal isn't just a band with singer and musicians, its more of a concert show, where audience participation is expected to follow along. Just watching a video of their concerts, I can feel myself burning calories. Have fun on their Babymetal exploration.... And I'm sure a lot of fans have pointed out, if you want to checkout the Kamiband, there are serveral songs with Kamiband intro's where you can see the skills of the musicians.... Catch Me if You Can, Rondo Of Nightmare, Kagerou, Yava, Tales of the Destinies, all have great instrumentals....and most of the songs have solos interspersed within. 🤘🦊🤘

Any time someone says Babymetal “aren’t” metal, I point them to Babymetal Death. It’s not that Babymetal “aren’t metal”. Instead it’s that they ARE so much more than that. Every single song is something totally new. The core of BM is blending cute with metal, but they take those 2 aspects and further combine them with other genres. Whether it’s different types of metal like power or thrash, other cultural influence like their song Shanti, or other nonmetal genres like rap or edm elements. That’s why it’s so hard to recommend a Babymetal song for the first time to someone because no one song represent what they are. They tackle everything and it’s always incredible.

Good Real Reaction. 2 different great groups with their own great attributes. With BABYMETAL's Kami Band. Who has help them achieve higher acclaim and acceptance ( Babymetal started with a fake band in skeleton outfits and dancing to a backing track.) But they are already established musicians who are contracted by the J Pop factory Amuse and are not completely controlled by them. As time went on, they started to get more attention and during live events and would add to the shows (Mikio's (Gt) harmonics, BOH's (bass) dancing, Takayoshi (Gt) hyping up the crowd / sticking out his tongue, Hideki (Drums) making faces at the girls / throwing drumsticks into the crowd..So After the fox festivals in 2017 they took away the Kami solo intros. Put them in dark outfits in front of dark backgrounds. Also 2017 was the last performances of Yui, before she officially left and Mikio Fujioka, who died Jan 2018 from injuries of an accidental fall. In 2019 the Kami band had to wear masks and for their European and US tour they used stiff American musicians (session players turned gimmick band Galactic Empire and Drummer of 100 bands Anthony Barone) By late 2020 they returned the original Kami band (with Isao on Gt for the late Mikio) who were still masked, they stayed that way until early 2021 when Babymetal went on Hiatus.

Excellent double play! Nemophila are fans of BABYMETAL.
Concerning BABYMETAL'S choreography, if you read the (translated) lyrics the choreo makes a lot of sense. Their choreo is like interpretative dance, and not just for it's own sake. Also, unlike most J-pop & K-pop groups, BABYMETAL uses no suggestive or sexual imagery, lyrics, or choreography in their music or performances. This was intentional. Early on it was mostly due to their youth, but that intent has followed them even as they matured. It's a gimmick they've never needed.

The screaming part in the breakdown is actually in the Babymetal version, too. It's just not that prominent in the live version. Love your Babymetal reactions so far. There are a couple of songs in which the Kamiband has some solos before the song. Maby that would be a good Idea for you to react to as a next song.
    Maby one of these:
Catch me if you can - Budokan 2014 version (beware of compilations, they are not good)
Yava with Kami intro, for a bit of skar metal (for this one you should put a watermark over the video due to copyright)
    Kagerou from Legend Metal galaxy
The last one is from 2020 and shows how they matured over the years but still manage to maintain the aspects that make them what they are. And the last one is with a different Kamiband, they use nowadays for overseas shows.
I'm pretty sure you will enjoy all of them :)

Good double reaction. BABYMETAL do have the pig squeal screams in the breakdown - they are on the backing track and may be more audible in some shows than others. You can most definitely hear them in the studio recording on the album, but Su-metal's vocals tend to be over-processed and compressed in studio recordings - just one of the main (and many) reasons I and many others prefer the live versions.
All the BABYMETAL memorabilia (the fox (not cat) masks, towels and so on) Nemophila had decorating their studio are from the personal collection of one of the band members, by all accounts she is a big fan of BABYMETAL.
I am absolutely not a fan of dancing either - the last thing I thought was missing when I listened to metal was choreographed dance ... and now I wonder why more bands don't incorporate it somehow. The difference between most dancing in pop music etc (which still seems mostly pointless and holds no interest for me) and BABYMETAL's choreo - it isn't just dance for the sake of it, it is interpretive to help with or relating to the meanings of their songs and, even more importantly, it is designed to involve and to lead the audience.
'Megitsune' regularly tops BABYMETAL fan polls for favourite song - they have also played it live more than any of their songs.
It reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which was also why Su had the fox mask in the breakdown) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength.
They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.
The breakdown (the audio didn't pick up the pig squeals so well in this performance) in the middle of the song uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su spoke a few words and did the high kick she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Nemophila's cover is very good, of course - they are very talented. As far as seeing the instruments being played, watching the drummer and so on - you will get to see the Kami Band more in due course, don't worry about that.

Babymetal do not show the Kami band in their official videos for the same reason, however the live shows which are what Babymetal focuses on, the Kami Band are not hidden away at all and can be seen clearly by the audience, they just are not the focus of the official videos because they are not paying the bills, Babymetal are. Having said that most BM fans can tell you the names of which Kami Band members are on stage, I would imagine most pop fans could not do the same for bands they are fans of.

Your pronunciation of both Megitsune and Kami Band is fine in my opinion (taking a Japanese course for 2 months) :)
The mask is not a cat but a fox. Fox God - fox hole - fox masks - "Megitsune" means female fox or vixen in Japanese ("kitsune" meaning fox, usually for both genders, it appears in the chorus: kitsune, kitsune, watashiwa megitsune) - you get the picture.
These are my 50 cents - the Babymetal fanbase is going to flood the comments with lore anyway :)

If you have some spare time, I suggest you to check out BabyMetal's official MV for Megitsune: it's really well made, and you can hear definitely better the breakdown and the PigSqueals there are in there, that are a bit muffled down in this live version! Then Mayu's screams will make much more sense!
It's impressive how well she does them, they really feel like the original ones :D
The Fox Masks (not cats ;) ) and all other BabyMetal merchandise on the set, is from Saki's (the redhead guitarist) personal collection: she is a HUGE BabyMetal fan, and all that merchandise is pretty rare and expensive ;)
Saki did cover another BabyMetal song (Ijime, Dame, Zettai) with her other band Mary's Blood some years ago, but sadly there is no footage of that, only some pictures!
Since you also did Maximum the Hormone, you could do some other double reactions with Nemophila's covers of MTH songs, there are 2: "Shimi, Shimi" and "Zetsubou Billy" :D
If you would like to see a bit more the musicians on the front, how about "Catch me if you can" with intro Live at Budokan? :)

Personally I much preffer the Nemophila version but then again, this is mostly just a case of me liking the style of one band over the style of the other.
I don't see any point in discussing "are BabyMetal metal?". In my mind, it's obvious that they are a mix of various things.
I'll also never diss the girls themselves. In fact, I have high respect for the hard work it took them to do what they have been doing for something around a decade now. The Kami Band are all obviously amazing musicians and like you, my only gripe with that is that they just get moved to the background most of the time while they are the main thing that interests me. Which kinda makes sense because they are not the "main thing" of BabyMetal.
I am not a fan of Idol units in general and care even less for watching them live really because that's just not interesting to me, no matter what genre the backing music is.
Do BabyMetal's producers know how to put on a grand show? Hell yes! No question about it! They took the playbook of huge pop productions and pulled it off admirably. Thing is that for me personally, that's something that's interesting to see sometimes but not at all anything that I'm hugely fascinated with long term. I'd much rather see a great band put on a great performance.

This dancing in this song and singing at the same time is crazy super hard. I think most people will have hard time dance like that for 4 min even without singing. And they are doing it in every song for 1-2hours(whole concert). Its very hard to do that.

Yes, the song is great even without the dancing. It's actually one of my top favorites. But when you get into them you start to appreciate the dancing part as an integral aspect of their performances and this represents one of their differential traits.
They originated like this (with the dance aspect being a fundamental part), and I'm okay with it. And, believe me, I'm the first surprised about that.

Three things for anyone new to BABYMETAL.
    1. You can’t fit them into any one genre. They have some of the heaviest metal songs, yet feature EDM, rap etc.
    2. Early BABYMETAL can be an acquired taste. They where experimenting with their sound & performances. For me BABYMETAL from 2019 is the more enjoyable listen due to Su’s mature voice and the polished performances.
    3. At first the choreography may seem strange. But when you see it in the context of a show, with crowd interactions, it all makes sense.
I’d highly recommend you seek out performances from Budokan ‘21 and Legend Metal Galaxy ‘20. The live performances of tracks like BxMxC, Distortion, Starlight are great.

ABBA ended their last tour there. Their final show on March 27, 1980, was the last live concert ABBA performed together. Numerous acts have recorded live albums at Budokan, including Bryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Cheap Trick, Dream Theater, Duran Duran, Kiss, Mr. Big, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Journey and Deep Purple.

Great reaction, dude! I especially appreciated your talk about whether Babymetal is "metal" or not - you're absolutely right, they're _very_ different from traditional metal bands, so in some ways they're not metal, but in that same vein their bold rejection of those traditions makes them _more_ metal than many bands that stay more safely within tradition.
And they don't stop either; they didn't just invent kawaii metal and then dust off their hands and say _well that's enough creativity for one lifetime_. They keep on innovating, from refining their sound and incorporating more different metal and rock subgenres in their second album to bringing in influences from other cultures in their third album, they're certainly not resting on their laurels.
I also appreciate the fun that the Nemophila girls have covering Megitsune (btw for pronouncing both 'Megitsune' and 'Akatsuki', you put the stress on the second syllable and almost don't pronounce the 'u' in the third syllable)...that's one of the great things about Babymetal, they make metal fun.

Lots of Babymetal videos, including most of their more recent shows and most of what's on their official channel, will get blocked for copyright, but there's an easy way to circumvent that: if you obscure the video you're watching with post-processing by blurring it or putting a translucent logo over it or something, you can almost always get around these blocks safely.
I mention this because, while that performance of Onedari Daisakusen is great, they did some much better ones later. I personally prefer OD from their 2015 show at Saitama Super Arena (which is unfortunately one of the few where you can't so easily get around the copyright blocking) or their 2014 show at the London Forum. Both of those shows have great crowds, and that song is one where the audience really gets into it. I like both bands, but I think Nemophila's version is better. Simply because Mayu pulls it off so well. I like Mayu's melodic sound more than her screams, but her screams in this one just bring that "extra omf!" to the song.

I appreciate BABYMETAL that establish pathways for new metal fans to start enjoying metal from then on. They had been my favourite new age metal from Japan (LOUDNESS is my all time fav tho) alongside Unlucky Morpheus. Akatsuki is still my fav BABYMETAL song but sadly there are not many of their song I could say that I am enjoying especially not the BLACK BABYMETAL songs. Only if BABYMETAL play instruments themselves, they could be above Unlucky Morpheus on my list. And that was before NEMOPHILA formed. Once NEMOPHILA kick-off their gigs, they straight away jumped my list to my fav. Japanese band, surprisingly ahead of LOUDNESS and my second all time fav. just behind Nightiwsh. I love music but on top of that, good powerful vocal is a must... and both Nightwish and NEMOPHILA got it all.🤘🏻

Is dancing at that level any less impressive than playing an instrument? Not to mention singing. And even if you don't agree, I ask again, _why does it matter?_ I'm not asking expecting a response by the way; no one needs to justify their preferences in art to anyone else. I don't think I said it quite that way (assuming you are talking to me, if not, sorry. lol). I believe I said something to the effect of you see dancing in more pop style and not in metal and that to me, the music doesn't need the dancing, but also that the dancing does make sense (I say that in my Nemo portion of the reaction). I've also said a few times that they may be more metal than most metal bands based on the fact that metal music came from non-conformity, and these ladies certainly aren't one to conform to the musical norms! Regardless they fucking ROCK, no matter what genre .

The conversation of whether or not Babymetal is actually metal has always been bullshit to me. Like you said, their non-conformity to metal cliches kind of makes them more metal than a lot of bands. Plus, I've never been one to get bogged down in whether or not somethings fits in a nice tidy box. I care more about whether or not I enjoy the song and band or not. Babymetal's music makes me feels something, it stirs something in my heart, and that's what I'm looking for. My only real concern with Babymetal is how sustainable it is. Su and Moa are still young women and great performers, but there will come a time when they've not going to be able to dance a whole show like they could when they were 16 and 14 or even 24 and 22, respectively. What happens when that time comes? With the new cryptic stuff they're putting out, has it already come?
Babymetal was founded in part to get girls and women into heavy metal; It works to a certain degree. I've heard Dany from The Warning specifically say they're Babymetal fans. I've always attributed the dancing to that goal and to BM's origin as one of the various clubs from Sakura Gakuin. Like you said, I recognize the skill all three have, but shout out to their stamina and discipline to do it for a full show in their country's most prestigious arena.
Nemophila's little touches always make their covers so great. They all did their hair like Yui and Moa except for Mayu who did her hair like Su. They've got Babymetal swag all around, including *fox* masks. Asterism also covered "Megitsune," but I think it was early in their life as a recording group and is 100% instrumental without the synth backing track.

I guess it's part of their act but they don't ever appear to be having any fun. However, I'd much rather watch and listen to Nemophila, who obviously love what they're doing. One of the main things I have always enjoyed and appreciated about Babymetal is that they (and the Kami Band) are so clearly having fun and enjoying every moment. You can often see Hideki the drummer having hengao (face pulling contest) with the girls when they are facing him, Moa doing things to try to make Su laugh or pinching her earlobe, BOH on bass joining in with the choreo ... so many more things ... Su trolling Moa with the mic at the end of the Tokyo Dome concert and killing herself laughing at Moa's reaction.
I like that Nemophila and Babymetal have the same sort of fun loving attitude.

Looks like my comment disappeared, so I'll just say I agree with what Grington and...worra...kcalb...? said. Babymetal's shows are tightly choreographed, so yes there are fewer opportunities for ad-libbed expressiveness, but they're still there if you look for them. In my original comment I suggested you check out some of their shows that aren't on youtube, because part of the problem is that most of what's on yt is earlier shows where they weren't as confident yet (relatively speaking obviously) and thus less prone to display emotion on stage, but by 2015 with shows like New Year Fox Festival/Legend 2015 and their set at the Tokyo Metropolitan Rock Festival that year, you can see them clearly having a blast. 😁

    • @ANDOR-
      @ANDOR- Před 2 lety +3

I can definitely understand why you think they don't have fun on stage. If I didn't know what they were like outside of Babymetal (up until 2015 when there was still footage of them out of character) I'd definitely agree with you. But they seem like that mainly because they're Idols and get treated as such. In the J-Pop idol industry they often don't show when the performers have fun on stage amongst themselves because everything needs to be perfectly choreographed and executed. DVDs and Blurays are also pretty heavily edited. Stuff that's not part of what was practiced and agreed on often simply gets cut out of the video or they switch to another camera when something "out of the ordinary" happens. The perfect example of that is actually Babymetal's live performances of Megitsune. In the breakdown when Su holds the mask in front of her face Moa almost always makes funny faces at her to try to crack her up, but more often than not the footage from their official DVDs/Blurays doesn't show it because they switch the camera so Moa's face isn't visible at that point. If you want to see them have fun on stage you need to watch footage from festivals or from non-Babymetal sources.
