Every time I watch this ending, I always wave at 2:01 and 2:57, then finally wave goodbye at 3:41 as the plane flies into the sunset, and salute at the dedication to Tony Scott afterwards.

It seems implied that Viper has passed away already. He has the picture of his dad and Viper from the first movie, when they flew together. I'm guessing Viper's wife gave it to him after his passing. Maybe Viper gave it to him himself, but it seems like one of those "he'd want you to have it" things.

When I was about to leave the cinema and that scene appeared, my heart was break in two, and I started to cry, because some who saw the 1986 Top Gun, unfortunately some did not see it to tell about it.
It was just beautiful

This should be the end of the franchise. “The circle is now complete” to quote the Lord of the Sith. All the sub plots are ended and all questions have been answered. One more movie will ruin it, like Alien 3 destroyed the Alien Franchise and “Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines” destroyed the Terminator Franchise.

I’m not a big fan of the first movie. But I really liked this one. I thought it had a better story. And this end credit sequence was great. My mom said even though she doesn’t like seeing the same movie again more than once in theaters, this is an exception. And I found out that this was directed by the same guy who made TRON Legacy. No wonder why I liked this film better than the first one. This guy knows how to make a legacy sequel great.

I first laughed at the fan theory that Maverick is dead and practically the entire film is a fever dream, but upon seeing it, I actually would have liked that angle much more. I guess I lost that lovin' feelin' of feel-good cinema.
