  • If Aristotle and Confucius were able to come together to talk about globalization today, could they ultimately resolve some of its most pressing challenges? This dialogue imagines the two philosophers debating and determining the ways models of democracy and governance need to evolve.
Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary General of the United Nations; Chair, Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future
Jeffrey Sachs, Director, Center for Sustainable Development, Columbia University
Moderated by Roger Cohen, Paris Bureau Chief, The New York Times and Host of the Athens Democracy Forum

Even if he was able to negotiate the toxicity of the system to get through suspect primaries and was miraculously elected President by a thoughtful and mature electorate (which does not exist), he would be destroyed by the oligarchs and sycophantic media within hours of being inaugurated. Failing that, he would butt up against a sea of indifferent puke they call congress.
A case in point - Obama. Comes in on a white horse, wearing shiny armour. He is like manna from heaven, and definitely promises to solve all the world riddles quickly and efficiently. The regard for this person is so high, they anoint him with a Nobel prize for peace, in anticipation of future saintly deeds. What actually happens is history. He turns out to be just another figurehead, falling in line with the established norms. He lets down his race, his country and the rest of the world. Sure, he shoots baskets and eats apple pie, but he also becomes expert in shooting death-dealing drones, and eating up other people’s security and economies.

Of course there is a difference between the American surveillance "democracy" and the Chinese surveillance state. One state uses surveillance to keep not only its own population down but even the rest of the world, whereas the other uses surveillance to help improve its people's lives. Ask yourself, who spied on Julian Assange while he was held up in the Ecuadorian embassy and who spied on Angela Merkel while she was in office?
Meanwhile, China is using surveillance on its veggie fields to help its farmers spray less pesticide in a more targeted manner in order to raise more and better quality crops or it is using its surveillance to warn people to temporarily leave their homes to avoid conflict with an adventurous elephant family that is strolling around stealing booze in the area of Kunming.

I used to think American (NATO) foreign policy was evil, (still do), but I always believed American foreign policy didn't reflect true American values. I'm wrestling with that and am currently undecided but getting close to changing my mind.
In 1994 Tonya Harding (American figure skater) destroyed (broke her knee) Nancy Kerrigan because she couldn't win fairly. Was that an anomaly or is that how most Americans compete?
That's exactly what America is doing with Russia, Europe, China, and virtually every small country they deal with. If America can't compete, it destroys.
Everybody knows it and they silently support it. Remember when Pompeo bragged at a Texas A&M university that the CIA "we lie, we steal, we cheat,' ? Well that's not really news but what I found scary was how the entire audience laughed and applauded.
Americans seem to support cheating and lying and destroying anyone who might succeed.
Americans stopped their government in the Vietnam war. Why have Americans not stopped their government from the continuous regime change, invasions, sanctions, and proxy wars that kill and impoverish people every day?
So either America is not a democracy or the majority of Americans are as evil as the CIA and their foreign policy.

Aristotle, besides being the greatest philosopher of all time, besides being a scientist, besides being the mentor and teacher of one of the greatest (if not the greatest) military strategists of all time, his work is still relevant and inspiring in today’s world. It would probably take ten lifetimes for an exceptionally brilliant individual to reach this level of knowledge and wisdom.
He came up with principles that are still relevant, functional and valid, 24 centuries later, and without any influence yet from Christianity… What a monumental contribution to mankind!

Prof. Zhang Weiwei (or even Eric Li) would have been a more appropriate and better choice as Confucius.

Indeed. I'd recommend Mr Zhang too, but instead we get an Uncle Ban Ki-Tom.

The event is in association with NYT, what do you expect, I am surprised though that they put Prof. Sachs. Who has strong words for Western cultures.

The goal is to cultivate virtue. Think about it. But in the world today, we scratch our heads to find every enemy to fight our ideological battle with.
