Virginia Beach | First Landing State Park Camping | (2018) Changing Lanes!

- We visited VA Beach in May of this year (2018). Although Chad used to live in the area for the Navy, it had been nearly 25 years since he was there. I (Tara) had never been there and never really spent any time in the state of Virginia. (that is going to change!)
We arrived in Virginia Beach exhausted after two long days of travel, a traffic jam and a wrong turn down a residential street that Chad would end up having to back the rig all the way back up! By the time we finally arrived at First Landing State Park, most of the good "first-come-first-serve" spots were already taken, so we settled on a site that backed up to the noisy Shore Drive. Luckily, we were able to move sites the next morning and ended up with a beach house for the week!! We got the best site in the entire park and had amazing views!!
Although Chad lived in the area for 5 years, he had never ridden a motorcycle across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. So, we did just that!! It was both amazing and a bit scary (for me at least). There are 2 underwater tunnels and 3 bridges that landed us over on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and, eventually to Cape Charles. Cape Charles was a charming little town that gave us a feeling of stepping back in time.
During our stay, Chad was able to reconnect with a longtime friend of his, Dave, and his two boys. It was great for me to spend time with them as well and for Dave to show us around town (and to treat us to the best sushi ever!)
We were able to get on the motorcycle (Lucile) a second time, so we could check out the other side of First Landing State Park and for Chad to show me around the beach strip.
For a first-timer to Virginia Beach, I loved it!!! And for Chad, it was great for him to go back to a place where he spent so much time and made so many memories. We even took a civilian tour of his old workplace - Norfolk Naval Base / Naval Air Station!!
I hope to get back to First Landing and (hopefully) get Site 7 again!! Our time in Virginia was not limited to VA Beach, so stay tuned for our an upcoming video on Williamsburg!!

Local touring, cruisers, sportbikes and even the supermotos make this brief ferry ride their destination for a loop route.
The ride to the Knotts Island Ferry Terminal has some nice twisties, limited traffic and scenic areas once you enter the rural area.

Keith Valence I’m by myself all the time. People are amazed that a 58 year old, single female can drive a rig. Honestly, I don’t know why, women ARE capable. I love it and have so much fun on my own. I had to back my travel trailer out a quarter of a mile once, due to inadequate signage. The way people reacted, you’d have thought I was a 6 month old baby. Lol. Just because I’m female. Too funny!! Anyway…RVing is great!!

FIRST THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE SIR!! My dad was in the Air Force and hardly talks about being in the Koran War... My husband and I finally got our 1st 5th wheel used to make sure we can handle this. I have 6 more years til I retire and well my husband is somewhat younger than I so I am making him retire with me to do this... Making Memories to last a lifetime . Va beach is an awesome place to vacation . I used to tow my fifth wheel there but now have parked it as a permanent in a campground. I miss the traveling and enjoy your videos.
I just found your channel yesterday and can't stop watching. My wife and I sold our house when our youngest kid left home and bought an ATC toy hauler in July. We're still stuck to a geographic area since I work every other week as an EMS helicopter pilot, but on my weeks off we try to go to new places. So far it's just been Oregon, California, Utah, and Idaho. We carry kayaks, mountain bikes, and my Yamaha R1. I haven't really considered a cruiser motorcycle until seeing yours on this video. I really like it. I might have to get rid of the sportbike someday and move up to a cruiser. If you ever make it to the West Coast, you should try Highway 36 between Red Bluff and Fortuna, California. I've ridden there a couple of times and it's amazing. In about 140 miles there are over 2200 curves with very little traffic. It would be great to meet or even ride with you someday. Happy travels! John
Thanks for such an awesome post, John! I've always wanted to fly a rotary-wing aircraft! I have my fixed wing license (haven't flown since 1986 though), but am fascinated by helicopters! Sounds like a really fun job minus the people that, I'm sure, are gravely injured (enough to warrant airborne EMS). You'll grow into a cruiser eventually. 😎 I've had a few sport bikes in my younger days. Now I sit back and relax! 🙂 LOL We're planning for west coast next year and will keep those tips in mind as well as the potential for a ride. Thanks for watching! -chad
As far as bikes go, have ya thought about STs like FJR, C14, etc? I owned an FJR for a lil over a year and it was a great all around bike. silky smooth, tons of power, sporty (when ya want), and can just cruise along all day. just a thought. We have a 14R and it does it all for us, currently (wife doesn't like STs cause she is soooo short). Me, I can't ride cruisers even if I wanted because of back issues... weird but it is what it is. lol
Hi you two! Yet another great video, complete with a few entertaining spots! Suffice to say, your videos are NEVER boring! LOL. WE have never been trying to full time, yet, but we are now down to 1 dog and 2 cats, so it is no longer impossible. But who knows what will come. I have to get over cancer again, before we can even think of doing an RV'in. But it looks like I am doing pretty well in that area. In 2015, I beat stage 4a throat cancer after all, so you could say I have the right attitude. So who knows what will happen.
In the past 40 years we have been part-time in the RV attending more dog shows than I care to count, but it was always great fun. Currently, we tow a 30' travel trailer with a 2007 Chevy 1 ton van with a 155" wheelbase, powered by a 6 L gas engine. This is the first time w have had a rig that even came close to being able to tow a trailer that we have owned. It really does quite well. We connect the rigs with a HENSLEY Arrow hitch system, which is supposed to make a pull behind trailer tow much like a 5th wheel trailer. WE have been using the Hensley now, since 2007. We just turned over 30,000 miles on this tow rig, so it is just about broken in. We swear BY the Hensley hitch, and have used it on 3 different tow rigs over the years. WE have had to replace one of the tension rods in the hitch, but all the parts are fully warranted, so all we had to do was order a new one, ship the bent one back, and we got a check in the return mail. They do not cover shipping, but at the time we did not care. Enough about that, we once pulled into a state park in Oregon, and drove down a suggested road, that had no turnaround, and we had to back the rig back out in the dark about 1/4 mile, (it seemed sooo much further), than that, but I measured it later, it was that far. NOT FUN. Just one of our many misadventures! With this tow rig, and the Hensley hitch, we have no trouble when a semi passes us at all, I think that the length of the tow rig really helps a lot. We found out on that trip that the Hensley increased something enough that we could actually pull the RV forward while backing up. Not at all advised. Since all of our towing was to dog shows, we needed the van to carry all the dogs that we had at the time. So we have never been able to tow a 5th-wheel, yet. I think that I would like it.

We live in VA and have camped at 1st Landing many, many times. My son, now in the Coast Guard in SF, met his (now) wife there.....they were both working there at the time. Our last time there we also had a dune-front site....awesome campground.....Glad you liked your stay.
Awesome...you have not lived till you go over that bridge in and 18 wheeler....all is good until you are in the tunnel and you actually see how close the pipes are to the ceiling ...lol love your videos....!!!
Had to back up almost a mile once with a 30 footer, my daughter 12 at the time walked behind the camper giving directions. Great memory, pain in the A at the time though. Love your videos keep up the great work.

Back in 1973 I got transfer orders to Ft. Story. In planning my move I somehow missed the word "tunnel" in the name Chesapeake Bridge and Tunnel. What a surprise to look ahead and see water where the bridge was suppose to be. My barrack's was a couple hundred yards from the beach, real tough duty station :). Forty plus years later my wife and I returned to go camping at First Landing. Not a lot of amenities but nice place to spend a few days.

We stayed at Fort Story Campground in 2017 and 2018. It is a small campground but it is nice.

I grew up in Norfolk. First Landing, was Seashore, state park was first place I camped. I was about 5! My grandfather helped to build the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Great video!

My Mrs works for the military and we stayed at the Navy base in VA bch. The camp ground was very well kept and full service. Hard to beat the price at $30 a night. We hit all the tourist spots and had dinner at a couple places that was awesome. We went early in the season before the official start of the summer tourist. It was great. What a really nice place. We took our RV around all the tunnels and bridges. Long ride but not too bad traffic wise.
Yes.. military bases have great deals on camping. But you have to be active, retired, or disabled... No love for the average DD-214 vet... but it would be nice... 😊

That was a memory shaker! In late ‘80, while going to Coast Guard machinery tech A school in Yorktown VA, I had the displeasure of riding on the back of my friends Yamaha 650 across the bay bridge tunnel in a downpour! We didn’t notice a fast moving front coming in. Were past the last exit and had to ride it out. We were headed north on the eastern shore to my previous duty station at Taylor’s Island MD. That small boat station has since closed but in the ensuing years I guess Cape Charles station has been established. Thanks for the trip! Safe travels.😊👍🏼

I really enjoyed this. My first salaried job was working for the engineering firm that designed and built the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and tunnel. This was 60 years ago. I was 15 and junior craftsman. You can do the math!

We're from Maine but are currently in Virginia for the next year due to my husbands work. Our favorite place to ride was Tennessee and Sedona Arizona...OMG so beautiful. If you ever get to Maine, definately ride the east coast and even do Cadillac Mountain. We live in our Montana RV and love this way of life. Thanks for sharing your adventures!

Originally from VAB. My wife and me traveled there last month, and stayed at First Landing. I thought something was amiss when I saw the beginning on Eastern Shore followed by your trip on I-64/44. GPS should have had you heading down Shore Drive to the campground! Ending up at the Narrows on 64th street was definitely not where you would want to end up. Nice recovery!
We had reserved a spot but still ended up coming in after hours (COVID protocols also in effect for staffing) so it took a while to find our spot. Might have been the best stopping point from our start on Outer Banks of NC to Cape May, NJ!. Beautiful walking beach and trails in Park made for some great biking!

One choice I fully enjoy is the van, the head of the all setup. It works both ways, it pushes the cargo and also becomes available for a ride.

We plan on doing the same thing as you guys this summer, but stay local so my husband can continue working at Newport News shipyard! Perks of living in a touristy area! Great video!
Lol on the nose hair. Years back a buddy was riding in the back seat of my truck when my wife without warning reached over and snatched a one of my nose hairs out. My buddy freaked out and told her she was putting his life in damage doing that! It was funny as can be!

Sounds like you might have also been part of an advanced (6 year) program? That's what I did.. 6 year commitment out of the gate, but got advanced to E-4 after A-School and before the advanced part of the training.

Another great video guys I’m a newbie when it comes to pulling our 43 foot fifth wheel. I have pulled 38 foot trailers before not as tall,not as long these big boys are easier to get in trouble with. I always learn from you guys what’s the old saying better you than me lol. All joking aside keep up the great work and I’ll keep watching thanks again
I think that backing a fiver up straight is a LOT easier than a bumper pull for sure! Easier all around actually, once you get used to the timing of turns.

On the Eastern Shore of Virginia, near where you were not to far after you got off the bridge. There is the Kiptopke State Park, which is beautiful. Not as beautiful as your campsite that you had but very nice. Also if you ever come back to VB during crab season you must go Margie and Ray's...best crabhouse in town! Love your videos!

Great job! I had to back my RV up in a Lightening Thunderstorm while on the Maiden trip because I went down a gravel road for Primitive Camping. That was harrowing enough! I’d have been totally screwed if I was backing this rig up! 🤷🏻♂️

Great video. Backing skills are right on. Retired from UPS pulling doubles with Three pivot points and 70ft long. My rig now is F250 and 34ft fifth wheel with just one pivot point. Much easier. Enjoy your videos 🙂

The only problem is she will NOT do First Landing state park. She thinks there's evil critters
(snakes and spiders everywhere). I tried to tell her it's safe but she wouldn"t here of it.
We have a 31ft Jayco motorhome and now it sits at home in a field.

I hauled a cell phone tower building out on the 2 nd Island of the cheasapeke bay bridge back in 1985 . Right now my grandson is in AIT at ft. Eustis , Va.
Just had a similar situation on the dead end road, except mine was on a curvy heavily forested gravel road and I had gone about 300'. Had to back out (it was horrible) and then back across a road onto another driveway to get out! Wow, what a stressful situation.
Holy hell, brotha! Fantastic JOB gettin' that huge ass backed up and turned around lol. I've had to do this only one time, but my toy hauler is only 33' from hitch (hitch ball, no fifth wheel) to ass, led by the 21.83' F350 6.0 that I have :D I didn't have a spotter, and I still have those godawful stock '04 F350 mirrors (which are notoriously bad for their inept spotter mirror). Two people basically helped me guide it out on each side of the rear. Really quite terrifying, and I _never_ want to do it again. But, I had your enthusiasm at the end and just absolutely got excited about having overcame such a shitty situation. A+ :D

Loved it. I saw the VAW-124 patch and made a mental note to ask if you were in the Navy. Of course you were. When I was on the FORRESTAL (80-84) VAW-125 was onboard. They were outta Whidbey Island. Did go to a week long school in Norfolk once. Such a long time ago. Great memories though.

This one was pretty special considering I grew up in Virginia Beach .
I run a tractor trailer to the beach and deliver to Fort Story...Lots of fun...lol.. Visit Hatteras nc and stay at frisco woods camp ground. Its on the bay side so its blocked from all the wind. Get a spot in the back right on the bay, we went on Thanksgiving, beautiful weather with breath taking sunsets and even a rainbow...One of the best camp grounds we have stayed at....

Jamestown settlement and Colonial Willamsburg! We went there over the holidays and we did the underwater bridge as well! Love that area.

We lived there for 4 years, launched our boat all over that state park. We never realized they had a campground, at least not one that would fit our Solitude! I think it's because we always went the back way. Thanks for the tour.
It's a really great park! Lots of reserved sites right on the water, but none as good as #7 in the first-come-first-serve area!
We live in the Black Hills of SD and the rides here are some of the best! Come during Sturgis Rally if you really want good people watching and a lot of fun!
Great riding the BLACK HILLS area ... But WAYYY OVER CROWDED roadways during, and even leading up to the time of STURGIS rally !!!

Chad, I was stationed at NOB back in '81 and then over to teach the MSF course at Little Creek for a year before moving to the CINCLANTFLT compound. Favorite motorcycle ride back then was with my older son up to Yorktown and Jamestown. Great ride. Now, however, I'm riding around the Rocky Mountains...better riding than the Dragon. ;-) Try it, you'll like it. If you do get out this way give me a shout, we can ride up to Estes Park. Oh yes, for us ORF's, can you slow down the time lapse when going through those little towns, it would be fun to actually SEE the sights as you pass through. Thanks, and FW&FS Shipmate.

The "No Cursing" signs were to save the tourism industry there. VA Beach became too much of a teen beach for families to enjoy, and when the families stopped showing up, the businesses began to lose money.
Riding in the DC area - Clifton VA has four great roads and an historic town in the center.
Riding in southern NM - Some nice roads around Cloudcroft, NM
Riding in AZ - Gila National Forest.
Riding in CA - San Luis Obispo to Monterey on the PCH.
Ton more, as I'm sure every rider's aware, but some of my fav's.
VA. beach is a beatiful area, I've bern there years ago.

We did First Landing this fall. Surprised how busy it was in October. Yeah, it IS the Eastern Shore. You know you are there because it smells like chicken. Super flat land. Done the CBBT many times with trailer. Tunnels must be well over 50' below sea level. Some nice CGs on the Eastern Shore. Our 'home' CG where all trips begin & end is Martinak SP, Denton, MD. A kayakers paradise. Assateague Nat Seashore is good too. No hookups but the wild horses stroll all round. Don't leave food on the picnic table. The horses will have it. Doing the DELMARVA is a great way to avoid the traffic on 95 from Richmond, Washington, Baltimore up to Delaware.

I Sooo AGREE, Rt 13 is the better, more scenic choice for travel ... Plenty of spots to pull of for fuel, food, rest stops !!!
Great video as always! I love the CBBT system. We've taken the RV through there a few times when heading down the coast. Delaware has some great beaches and of course the Outer Banks is awesome. I felt your pain backing down that neighborhood street. After 20 years of RVing, I had a brain storm. When backing up, my wife will spot me and now I have her call my cell which is connected to the bluetooth on the truck radio. This way both my hands are free and one of us can talk over the other if necessary to avoid a collision. We used to use the walkies, but this is better for us.
We’re going there via Bay tunnel and bridge in august for vacation . Really looking forward to it . We were stationed at Ft. Meade for 7 years but never had the opportunity.
Just catching up on your old posts. Western NC has awesome rides. Cherohala Skyway, Tail of the Dragon and a dozen others top our ride list. We stay at a small campground for riders only called Iron Horse Lodge in Robbinsville NC. Must have bikes to stay. Only 6 or so hookup sites, rest is tents, cabins and wagons. Great people, great rides, great evenings around the community campfire and great moonshine! Next time your close you should check it out!

Another great ride is the Twisted Sisters Loop (hwy 335,336,337) in central Texas. Spent a week riding around there and had a great time.

My home for 17 years!!! I was also a Navy AT, assigned to VF143 at NAS Oceana. (VAST) then NAMTRADET, then I got out and worked for NADEP Norfolk. I went to a squadron reunion last year. A LOT has changed there.
I’ve lived here at the Beach for over 20 years. A fun ride is going out to Pungo and riding down to NC taking the ferry across and coming back up to the beach area. Great round trip with little stops all over the place.
Sounds like a good ride! We used to go down to the OB on the weekends when I lived there. Also used to fly down to Kittihawk.
Princess Anne to Knotts Island, NC then the ferry back to the mainland, there are a few great places for an inexpensive lunch, then cross the boarder and ride the back roads of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach back around. When your back in the area check out Northlanding campground in Southern Virginia Beach
Awesome video guys, thanks for sharing...not quite Charleston but pretty good haha. Recently sold my Victory Cross Country:( it was sitting in the garage covered and never used. Watching ya'll ride makes me miss her, great idea to take rides with subscribers when in their home towns. If you guys want to take a boat ride next time by...that we can do. If you ever get up to NH, White Mtns. has some AWESOME rides. Especially the Kanc!, or Rte 302 up thru Crawford Notch, or if you got the nerve take the Mt. Washington Auto Rd. My wife and I used to take our Spyder up there a couple times a year before moving to DE. No good rides here....

Was stationed there (Little Creek Amphibious Base) back in the early 70's and then again for a few months at NOB on a carrier, Independence (CV-62) retired in 90. Enjoyed the video of the area.
Also something very cool about this area is that on the eastern shore and in outer banks N.C. you can watch the sunset over the water and you are doing this on the EAST COAST mind blowing and a FANTASTIC date idea
Ohio 424 between Defiance and Napoleon. Listed as one of the top ten favorites by bikers. Independence Dam State Park is on it. We like to ride our bicycles there with a decent walking trail.

That is my neck of the woods. That leads to a large parking lot and a boat ramp. Little late now but you could have made it in and turned around.
You should have headed about 5 more miles north and checked out Cherry Stone camp ground.... We love that place! Its busy, but you can't beat the views and they have trees! The KOA is like camping in a field.

Any time! If your ever in the shennandoah region check out a place called Creekside Camp ground. Your back patio will hang out over the creek. They have great wifi. Reach out if you guys are ever headed to PA... Lots of places to share in my back yard.
