the guard is there not so much to stop the grass flying but to protect the engine from overheating...it cuts the line to keep the engine running at peak performance...witb a 4mix engine you have a high temp plastic cam gear with a lobe to actuate the valves...running longer line will cause the engine to run hotter and start to degrate the cam from the extra heat affecting the valve obe and the compression release arm which is part og the cam gear as well...using the shield prevents overheating the engiine and preserves the cam gear and lobe...
When you remove the guard you can damage the engine by over heating the engine running the line past the line limiter just one bump past the line limiter will raise the engine temperature 50 to 100 degrees your clutch and gear box will wear out too safety is also a concern like windows cars and small children 😁
Yup 👍
Have u ever greased the gear box, u need to do it once a year, the gear bix screw is at the top of the head, take side bolt out and shoot alittle stihl grease in there, there is videos on this model to show how to and where to grease, if one fells it will cost around 40 bucks to replace the shaft, so always grease the shaft head..
Just bought one today and when I took the guard off the gear box came loose and won't stay on. I tried screwing everything back (no guard of course) but it's still loose, I need to get that fixed but the trash can is where the guard belongs
once you get use to using it with out the guard you will getting even better with out it
I don’t regret it at all
Just put the speed feed 400 on my FS91r and love it so far (3 days of use). I'm also removing the guard tomorrow to see if it really IS "life changing".
The SpeedFeed is MONEY! How do you like it gaurdless?
@@ProgressiveLawnService I like! A lot! Definitely noticed that I cut WAY more grass as I often don't notice immediately that the line is short when the guard was on (harder to see I guess). I also noticed the motor is under more load with more line out. It's nice that the line won't get that long before it catches on something and gets cut... like you couldn't have 2-feet of line out for long. I think I probably averaged about 10-12" of line. Pretty big difference in the speed and how I actually trim now though :D
@@ArbitraryLifestyle yeah that’s one thing I stay cognizant of is how much line I have out. The motor doesn’t like a lot and a lot of people said I was stupid for doing it because of that but as long as you’re not letting 2’ of line get out then you’re fine.
Burned out my 56rc yesterday(no guard on)...picked up a 91r today🇺🇸
Nice! You’ll love it
I have the fs91 with the speed feed head and guard on. The line does not meet up with the line cutter…. It will not cut the line. Any input? Thanks!
The speed feed head might be putting the string a different distance away from where the stock head has the line. I put a speed feed head on after I took my guard off so I can’t say from experience what’s causing it.
What happens when something sharp cuts on one line shorter and you have 4” on one and 12” on the other ???
No idea never had that happen 🤷♂️
Turn the top of the head instead to wind the string in, avoids the spaghetti wrapping around your hand when you wind the bottom of the head
Yes, it works much better that way!
Taking the guard off will blow out your clutch..no?
Been 9 month since I made this video, no problems to report. I don’t let a ridiculous amount of line out. If someone let out like a foot and a half of line I could see that being a problem
My stock stihl head would have the line get stuck In the head too! I switched to the 26-2c
Yeah I’ve only ever had that happen once since installing the speed feed and it was my fault because I put too much line in. Thanks for watching!
Where do I get that spacer? Where did you buy it?
The spacer in the speed feed head?? It came with the SpeedFeed when I bought it
its a 4 cycle mix
manual states 50:1 mix, where are you getting 4 cycle mix at??
It's a four stroke motor but you still have to mix the gas I just bought one there a piece of shit no power compared to a real two-stroke
It's a 4 mix which takes 50:1 mix like a 2 stroke engine
Doesn’t look like I can remove the guard from my electric trimmer. Hate the guard.
FS91r is a 4 stroke
BOGGING DOWN:
FS 91 needs carb adjusted about every 50hrs or so…
Runs fine for me. I don’t do lawn care anymore, just cutting my own property
