I don't know much about sport but traditionally the Malay play "sepak raga", where the players stand in circles and the one miss kicking the ball loses. Raga literally means a basket or cage which refer to the ball, which is woven from ratan. (material use for making wicker basket or furniture) Sepak takraw is the combination of sepak raga and volleyball which require the net and a court. The word takraw is a Siamese word which refer to the style of kicking. In Malay the word kick is express in three ways. Sepak if you use the side of your foot. Tendang if your use the top of your foot and Terajang, if you use the sole of your foot. These style of kicking are mostly employ in "Silat", the martial art of fighting. Historically during the 70's up to early 90's this game was mostly dominated by Malaysia. All that's changed when a certain Thai player, my all time favourite player of this sport even though I'm malaysian. The man who goes by the name Suebsak Phunsueb practically invent the horse-kick serve, those over the head kick serve that go so fast, 60kmj per hour speed on average. That's totally become a game changer and Thailand has been dominating this game ever since with their mastery of the horse-kick serve and roll spike. In the modern era of this game Malaysia wins over Thailand can be counted by finger in one hand. That's how dominant Thailand has been for the past 30 years or so.

This sport is originated from South East Asia region. But it is most associated with the tradition of Malay culture from earliest Malay sultanate. On those day people activities is playing the ball in a circle area and juggling it using ball made of rattan or bamboo. In Malay world it is called sepak raga. There are many variation such as chinlone from Myanmar/Laos/Cambodia. The sport was standardized by the country in South East Asia. Because the origin and the powerhouse of the games at that moment till now is Thailand and Malaysia, so it is agreed to used a name from both country to represent the sport, sepak from Malay word and takraw is Thai word and known today as sepak takraw.
The sport has been constantly contest inthe biennial South East Asia games and the Asian games. The are also a variants of double and quad besides the original 3 person a team.
There has been many event to popularized the games at international level even at the Olympic. Even there is a plan to include the sepak takraw into volleyball, that's why it was known as takraw volley last time but it was rejected by the association because the sport can stand on its own rather than using other sport association. That's why the other variant such as double and quad was born and the rules of double/quad is quite similar to volleyball whereby the triple are stick to the old tradition of the games. The double/quad serve ball from outside or back of the the court line just like volleyball.

But for sure this sport has been played for quite a long time, dating back from the 15th century. Everyone plays this sport, from children to adults, played on the streets to a formal international competition. The training regime is a bit harsh, as I experienced myself😅. Sepak takraw is the modern sport form of sepak raga. They give rules and scoring to the traditional game, which exists since the 15th century AND put a name that mixes two words from two countries that the traditional game of sepak raga originated. Sepak means kick in Bahasa Melayu and Takraw is a hand-woven rattan ball made originally by Thailand, thus sepak takraw is the modern sport version of it.
Sepak raga simply plays that a "ball" made from rattan need to be kept from hitting the ground using any part of your body beside the hands and it's fun enough to last for hundreds of years as a game.
As you can see the ball is made from rattan, kinda like flexible wood and is not that bouncy at all... you need a lot of force to propel it into the air compared if you just kick a tennis ball.

Year 1968 something, it became a standardized sport. It is super good for martial art students from South East Asia to master timing, deeper energy, tactical, pain control and so on. Long time ago, the ball are not just as hard as the wood, it was not even hollow like the modern day. Now, since it has become a game in the sport, so they are a lot of changes has been made so that it can be a sport. But still, to master this sport, you need years and years of training, just like the South East Asia traditional martial arts called Silat/Muay Thai etc.

    History:
Sepak Takraw may have been introduced to Southeast Asia by the Chinese, who were inspired by the traditional game Cuju, an ancient military exercise where soldiers play to keep a leather ball filled with feathers airborne by kicking it back and forth between two or more people.[10][11] As the game evolved, the feather-stuffed ball was replaced by an air-filled ball with a two-layered hull. Cuju is also considered by the International Football Association (FIFA) as the origin of football as a sport.[12]
In Myanmar, Sepak Takraw is known as "chinlone". Chinlone has played a prominent role in Myanmar for about 1,500 years. Its style is performance-based because it was first created as a demonstrative activity to entertain Burmese royalty. Chinlone is heavily influenced by traditional Burmese martial arts and dance.[13]
In Malaysia, the first recorded instance of Sepak Takraw, with balls made of woven strips of rattan, was in the Malacca Sultanate (present-day Malaysia) in the 15th century, according to an ancient Malay manuscript, "Sejarah Melayu" (Malay Annals).[14][2][15] The Malay Annals described an incident involving Raja Muhammad, a son of Sultan Mansur Shah, who was accidentally hit with a rattan ball by Tun Besar, the son of Bendahara Tun Perak, in a Sepak Raga game. The ball hit Raja Muhammad's headgear and knocked it to the ground. Angered, Raja Muhammad immediately stabbed and killed Tun Besar, leading to some of Tun Besar's kinsmen wanting to kill Raja Muhammad in retaliation. However, Bendahara Tun Perak managed to restrain them from an act of treason by saying that he would no longer accept Raja Muhammad as the Sultan's heir. Sultan Mansur Shah ordered his son out of Malacca and had him installed as the ruler of neighbouring Pahang.

Malaysia was the first world champion in sepak takraw when it was first played competitively. They held on to that title for almost 2 decades, starting in the 1970s up until the early 1990s. Then came Thailand, which broke the streak up by Malaysia and held the title through the late 1990s up until the 2010s. Now, Malaysia is making a comeback against Thailand in Sepak Takraw for the world champion title. This sport is played throughout Southeast Asian nations, heck even as far as Timor Leste and Vietnam, and it's been going on since the time before Christ came.
