I live in Italy. The Mediterranean diet has changed my life. I enjoy my food, I love moving, and I realize how essential true connection to my fellow humans . I eat loads of beans, greens and nuts. I love to walk and cycle. I sleep a lot. Of course I work, amd fortunately I connect with my students on a heart level. I nap! I dance and sing and I sit still. I connect with those with whom I resonate. I limit my exposure to social media. I just love to see people face to face. I walk rather than drive. I cycle every day. I don't go to the gym. I have real friends and we would do anything for each other, plus I really enjoy the connection to my students during my work. I eat plant based. I rest when I am tired. I listen to my body and soul.
Good for you!
Singing is good medicine.
Wow, this re-sparks a daydream I have of connecting with my Meditteranean roots and living somewhere in Italy or thereabouts. I wonder only about the political climate and culture....
The big city is awesome in many ways, too
All sounds nice, but you still need to do some resistance exercise
Lovely! Thank you for sharing such a positive message.
My aunt has her 101 year old birthday next month. Her diet was white chicken and fish, no other meat. She did a lot of walking. She was a teacher of Metaphysics and was spiritual throughout her life. Not a church goer.
She always kept busy.
Her 4 sisters kept close-nit ties with her over many decades.
Is she still with you?
I'm guessing her sisters are still alive or lived to be 80+?
Did they take out her uterus or ovaries?
What else did she eat? A lot of carbs??
@@SI-ln6tc Which carbs r you referring to?
For the past two years have pretty much eaten a 'Blue Zone' diet. Lost 24 pounds, blood chemistry so much better, work strenuously 3 days a week. Like where this has taken me.

I was active all day living in London walking down and up three long levels of underground escalators and all over the city on foot. The US way of life is incredibly inactive compared with Europe. I didn’t need 8 years to figure this out.
The cities of Europe and Asia are very walkable since they grew organically slowly over time. A lot of cities and places in the US are planned and many are built around the car. I wish they would change their whole approach to City planning. I came across this one guy who talked about making micro communities that were walkable instead of the traditional suburb so people didn't have to rely on the car and they'd be better for tighter communities in society.
I’m a black woman that came from the Caribbean as a child, and living in Canada. Over the years I have noticed how differently we age in comparison to caucasians. It all boils down to eating healthy, moving more, taking care of your skin, surrounding yourself with positive people, living a healthy lifestyle.

The tests that constantly change ranges and whats acceptable based on how the population is doing? Veganism is a sure fire way to cause diseases and destroy the planet.
@@kapower06 How does eating Plant Based cause disease and destroy the planet?
@@KikiAndJeffreyPearl vitamin, mineral, and fatty acid malnourishment leads to many diseases. High intake of plant/seed oils Leads to heart and brain issues. Monocrop agriculture and most vegan food items destroy fertile soils and lead to deforestation. Plus in the end many more animals must die to support that large scale farming.

Life is having a good attitude on purpose and anticipation for a planned future. The ultimate hallmark of humans in my opinion..is the ability to PLAN!
Ready access to healthcare is a determining factor. Having a good job that allows one a reasonable lifestyle (remember the minimum wage?). Hard to have a sense of purpose in your life when you have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to pay the bills. The Okinawans have good health care too. If you don't, you might be stressed. In the inner cities, streets are NOT redone every 7 years. "Move to a happier place?" The average American does not have US$400 in savings to weather any type of emergency. It's fine for Whole Foods foodies who earn over US$100,000 to think this way, but it is completely unrealistic for most Americans. Good luck on your centenarian quest!! Pass the kale Dale!

I agree. In order to be a true blue zone, there needs to be Universal Basic Income. Money is the biggest stressors.
I’ve always been what is called poor but I eat almost 100% organic, am lacto-ovo vegetarian,80 years old. It is possible.
People need to get back to basics and learn to grow veggies in their gardens/on balconies instead of lawns and shrubs/plants. It's the easiest thing in the world to grow herbs, tomatoes and strawberries, just for starters. We have become so disconnected from nature.

Interesting that he talks about Okinawa. Learned much when i lived in Okinawa.
What did u learn?
I lived in the Philippines for three years; their way of life was so markedly different than that of the U.S.A. They are always extremely thankful for what they have, do not worry about what they don't have, and treat you like family. In the small coastal town I was in, virtually every house is multi-generational. They are the happiest people I have ever met, and they would also assist you in any way they could. I miss living there. Great memories.
Do Okinawans eat a lot of pork??
I love this direction of thinking and living. Good stuff!
No, I don't want to. I've had a few almost 100 yo relatives in my family (no dementia etc.), but it's really sad actually.
Only a great grandfather and he wasn't very happy
I struggle to figure out how to apply this kind of information to my own life. Gardening and making all of my food from scratch simply adds hours upon hours upon hours of additional labor to my days. It also costs quite a bit of money. I have a colleague who lives on 2 acres here in North Texas, and he spends thousands on his garden. He eats from it. And preserves a lot of the food that he grows from it. But he puts far more time and money into the soil than he gets out. So for me, these are things that I can really only consider for my retirement. I simply don't have any more time to get up in the morning before work, or come home after work and basically farm on my property. Kudos to people who can prioritize this, but I don't have the time or the money.

Dan looks amazingly good! This is a great lifestyle change!
Trying to replicate a lifestyle that contributes to longevity by distilling it to a diet plan is reductionist and careless. So many more factors contribute to the length, or shortening, of telomeres than simply eating a particular way, i.e. cutting out meat. Dan's M.O. has always been veganism, which the Ikarians were NOT. Some ate little meat, and those are the ones he pushes to the front of the line to bolster his arguments, but the reality, just as with the China Study, is that ancient cultures ate animal protein. PERIOD. There has never been a vegan culture anywhere on the planet that lived long enough, or sustained veganism long enough, to leave anthropological evidence of themselves. There are good reasons for this, as the deep wisdom of our ancestors knew.
There people eat a varried diet, meat and veg, no processed or fried foods, and tend to boil and stew their food. 100% home cooked meals no mc donalds or kfc and take out here
There are more 90-year olds that DO NOT eat meat than they are 90-year olds that DO eat meat.

The food in those places have more nutrients than even organic in America. Also stress does not exist , even the little they have is difused and shared as a community. You cannot get it in America where people are so greedy and self centered that they cannot even wear masks to protect each other.
You speak the truth.
Generalizations are harmful. Many people want to live simpler. Many would prefer not to pay 1/2-2/3 income in rent alone. People here leave their home towns so they can support their families at home.
It doesn’t mean there isn’t greed in the U.S. and there are Way more people in lower working class, and poor communities, created by the gov, who just want healthcare and quality education, than there are who control who gets access to wealth.
And thank you for bringing that up. It’s called lateral oppression when working class people blame other working class people for the situation that they were All in (not enough resources to live easily). It’s one of the most powerful tools of the ruling classes.
When we step back and look at the bigger picture, we can then begin to assess what we as working people need to do in order to create the experience that we want to have, which for many includes more time with family, access to healthcare, access to time off when sick, access to vacation time, not having to choose between cooking and buying gas for your car.
Generalizations only cause harm!

All those green zone cities or countries have a universal health system, that’s one important thing for living a longer life
Blue zone. But yes.
In the blue zones they don't get sick like that or have chronic diseases because they're so healthy
Dan didn't mention that there is one Blue Zone here in the USA.
Loma Linda California Seventh Day Adventists, who have a very high percentage of vegetarians and vegans compared to other places in the USA.
SDA vegan men there live about 10 years longer than other Californian men.
Wow ~ would of been a nice thing for this Mr Man to of acknowledged all of the work done before his interest in the field ~ & the pointing research here available for years...End of day ~ Plant Based is best ~ scientifically proven time after double blind random testing time.
Social media is interesting. I think happiness regarding social media has more to do with how it's used. There are tons of educational videos and tons of videos that address many interests. I am certain that there are true attributes to Social media if used correctly. From learning a language to fixing just about anything you need is explained in Social media. I also think that many people are comfortable being on their own. Loneliness is more of an issue if you need to be constant surrounded by people. Of course eating correctly and avoiding stress leads to a better life but as to what causes longevity that I think is unknown. Sometimes, longevity is tied to genetics. I know people that party hard and did not specifically spend too much time on their diet that lived well into their 90s. Their longevity in my opinion was due to genetics. These people had a string constitution when they were young and remain healthy into their golden years. Bottom line, I'm not sure anyone knows why some people live into the 90s and others died in their 60s.
Lomb Linda, wow.
Pistachio nuts and Sabrett hot dogs, perhaps an occasional Arthur Ave ravioli
Adopt a pet they keep you young and are great companions
Whole food plant based all the way!
Travel...See how simple and uncomplicated peoples lives are in less technologically addicted countries. The Nicoya Peninsula is a very interesting case study.Go to a blue zone for a week. Then you will know what Dans talking about.

Yes, I wonder if Okinawa, Sardinia and cetera are among the sunniest places that aren't terribly hot.
