This channel is the only one that can connect Jigsaw, Kierkegaard and Taylor Swift in such an amazing way. Keep up the good work!
hahaha so true!
Then again, the Taylor Swift part (unlike anything else in this video afaik) was just a reference that didn't add anything to the narrative.
Kierkegaard and Kanye**

The Happy music makes this video 10000 times funnier
Mr Poool you should watch helix then
Brutal violence is shown explicitly, but swears are blipped and blurred? C'mon!
Hahahaha
Murica
'Public' censorship believes that swearing and nudity will do more harm to a person's psyche than depictions of brutality, whether or not this is true (and I would personally argue that this notion is a fucking joke) the channel has to follow these guidelines in order to remain effective in its ability to reach the most people that it can (which should be more than it does, this channel is brilliant in both content and delivery across the board)
Gregory Smith I think we all agree on that, it’s just CZcams’s dumb guidelines that forces wisecrack to censor swears. It’s not a personal gripe against strong language.
America! Where films with 20 gun deaths are rated PG-13 and romantic comedies with swears and sex scenes are rated R!
Lmfaooo “Wanna know the best thing that happened to me after cutting off my own arm? Handicap parking at the DAMN MALL!” God i watched that like 10 times.
This is officially the most I've seen of any saw film
The saw films are okay. The first one is really good (not just for the torture porn) for the twists and what not.
Same here, I'll probably never watch one fully
Then you are missing out. Unless you can't handle gore, in that case you better stay away
The first three are pretty good, and the sixth one is really fun to watch. The rest are alright, but none of them are too bad. The violence the series is infamous for doesn't really fully kick in until the end of third film.
First one really isn't that bad. If you can weather Se7en you will survive Saw.
The problem with externally, consciously imposed suffering is that it leaves space for self-victimization. Instead of asking the question: ''Why am I suffering like this and what responsibility can I take to make this better (hence becoming a more ethical person) it allows for the sufferer to externalize the suffering rather than accepting accountability. This is all because the actions of the Jigsaw god don't appear to be driven by an underlying compassion or tough love but by disgust and even hatred.
Ramon Martensen True...he hates what the world did to him so he takes it out on others to kill his own pain.
Yes. And I think that's why Kierkegard's philosophy of suffering and growth is flawed or at least has a loophole. Let's take a look at a micro setting of human existence, the romantic relationship. I know plenty of people who have many failed relationships and afterwards they always complain that their partner was uncaring, unreachable or whatever. So instead of taking the opportunity to see what's their role in the tragic ending and grow from the realization, they rather rest in the idea that they are victims of bad partners. In the context of this movie we could say that Jigsaw his victims have a legit reason to think like that.
Yes Ramon, it does remind me so much of Exodus of how Pharaoh's Heart was hardened after every plague. Even though it was hardened, he still had a choice to make. He could've chose to overcome it and do what was best for his people and let the Hebrews go, or continue to test God and cause another worse plague. He constantly chose the later until it was too late.
Kierkegard's philosophy is already being shown to be utterly false as the development of better neuroimaging technology allows us to assess the true psychological cost of suffering. Beyond a very set amount of resistance, human beings' brains are affected by abuse and suffering. Just this past year, researchers got a look at the brains of children who were corrected using physical punishments. They had shorter memory span, poorer impulse control, and worse life outcomes than those who's parents took a more authoritative than authoritarian approach to discipline. That's a pretty huge loophole.
Ramon, what you are basically saying is that we are, or at least should think that we are, the ones responsible for what happens to us. In my opinion, that is not only a very unforgiving and self-righteous point of view that almost seems like an extreme version of victim-blaming, it is also simply not true.
First of all, it implies that everyone can control everything completely, which obviously is contradictory.
Second, there is plenty of statistical evidence that our actions are at least heavily influenced, if not completely controlled, by circumstances. Our decisions do not just come from within ourselves, they are based on our experiences.
Third, at the moment it seems very likely that we don't have a free will at all. Accepting that our world is solely defined by natural laws means accepting that these laws also apply to the human body, which means that everything is predetermined and there is no alternative cause of events where we make a different decision.
Sorry, but the ones who are self-victimizing got it completely right. It's the ones who are saying we should pretend that we are in complete control of our situation and should see the bad things happening to us as a kind of carmic retribution who are wrong. That is just slave moral if you don't enjoy your situation and sanctimonious if you do.
Please don't pretend there is some kind of "divine justice"-substitute. God is already dead. ;)
"The choice is theirs to live or die"
The dude who got his stomach cut open while immobilized would beg to differ.
That was a trap from Mark Hoffman (jigsaw apprentice) not John Kramer
So the game was manipulated
Yeah that was even before Hoffman was an apprentice to John. Good one tho
Many of the traps designed by Hoffman and Amanda were rigged as a sign of revenge more then a lesson.
@@nairobi8056 which ones did amanda design
@@kurtispittman2103 I believe she did the first one you ever see in the series
In my opinion, how long a minute really is, is the lesson I take from the Saw films.
That's both a true response to the philosophy and a beautiful one.
I think the great problem with the Jigsaw killer in his application of Kierkegaard’s philosophy is confusing suffering with physical pain. These too concepts have nothing to do with each other.
All physical pain is suffering, not all suffering is physical pain.
Germán Saucedo yup, how is someone supposed to live a good life after replacing a body part with an infection
Germán Saucedo Precisely. If he forced these people to watch their loved ones in these painful, horrifying situations it'd be more effective. If he gave them the chance to sacrifice themselves rather than watch their loved ones die it'd be 1000x more horrifying.
I don't think empathy is required for Kierkegaard's suffering.
I think its more about truly experiencing suffering and recognizing just what it means in the first place, since sometimes the description alone just won't come close to experiencing it.
If they feel it, this might lead them to a realization that will change their mindset.
Not all the people even have such loved ones, so having them watch others suffer will barely have any effect (especially if they are the kind of heartless person that was put to the test by Jigsaw for that reason in the first place.)
At the very least, they might appreciate _their_ life more.
Rethinking their actions and appreciating other people's lifes will still require empathy, though.
This philosophical part of saw is so deep, that I think that even the producers of the movie were like ‘wtf, we’re geniuses without knowing it’, after watching this vid..
I agree!George Lucas must feel the same!
Yeah. Their creative brilliance was a total accident. Makes sense.

Well Hoffman made winnable games. However, his games seemed as though people had to die. I believe it's Saw V when they had the 5 people in the group and they all could've stayed together but they all ended up dying as they couldn't work together.
Ya he's says your instincts will tell you do one but he warns them to do the opposite
The only game he didn't make winnable was the pendulum trap.
@@PhantomBones101 He wasn't a Jigsaw apprentice at that time. It was the pendulum trap that caught Jigsaw's attention.
Pretty sure Hoffman made the games exactly like Kramer wanted, meaning he hardly had any influence on them.
Interesting choice for a philosophy video.
is it? saw was a very philosophical movie. 2 and 3 were still pretty ok. anything afterwords was diluted to movie trash

The scriptures of Romans was made for and by the early church, so it's not a surprise that in their days of painful persecution, people would say that pain would bring hope. However, Hope is technically the only way to emotionally cope with suffering, which brings the question, what other purpose does Hope have besides suffering? It seems all hope ever do is cope with pain without giving answers. Without suffering, there would be no reason to hope in the first place. Why hope when you're always happy and pain free? It seems that hope does nothing else but makes you not wanna die because of suffering.

Jigsaw's method doesn't work, forcing people to do things never works, more so torturing them. Life has natural suffering. You don't need to force anyone to torture them or to make them repent, they will lose loved ones and will get sick and old like all of us. Even if in the future we don't get sick or live longer, we will always have heartbreaks and mistakes that will make us suffer.
diego I dont know about that. Plenty of people get away with pure dujmb luck and endure minimal suffering throughout theit lives.
That's the point of the movies. Just this time it isn't some crazy religious killer but just some crazy killer.
Screaming PHOENIX but then they also enjoy, or cherish less of their lives...
Yup. Those people that survive the game are just going to continue asking 'why would someone choose for me to endure this kind of pain?'. Jigsaw isn't as intelligent as he thought. Not everybody thinks like you broski. Some people are broken by heavy levels of pain, not "reborn".
diego Ask any abused child what they ever did to deserve their suffering back before they had choices. Some of the answers you'll get should put paid to the whole idea of Jigsaw's mission in life.
You can hear the "god dosn't exists" attitude in his voice when he talks about it 😂😂
Tenacious Buns , some of us call that 'intelligence'
And most of us call both lines of thinking pretentious
@Alex Meggoe Lol your an idiot, Saint Nick was an actual person
@Alex Meggoe Real funny, if you were smart you'd have known the real man died a long time ago. Nice try at sarcasm; though I'm a little too old for presents on Christmas.
@Alex Meggoe Of course. But you misunderstand what I'm saying; Saint Nick was a real man we can trace back to the ancient Greek city of Myra where he was a Bishop. Though we don't have evidence to prove he was generous, the dude is more of an idea nowadays that pushes people to be more generous and to give thanks for what you have.
And who are you to say that what you have no knowledge of, you can dictate weather it's real or not? Truth is you can't meaning all the people who are like "God is fake" or that "it's just a story we tell our children to make them behave" are ignorant for thinking they are all knowing.
“Those who don’t appreciate life, don’t deserve life”

How should i appreciate live, is there any measurement tool?
"Yeah but don't torture people and kill innocent you sick old fuck"
- Me
Until a person is faced with death. It's impossible to tell whether they have what it takes to survive
Natural suffering ≠ forced suffering
Forced suffering for renewal, is punishment, not an explanation for why pain exists in the first place. The christian connection in the beginning is a huge stretch. It's more christian like in Jigsaw's failure, and his need to enact punishment. Much like all religions and ideologies, his teachings are misinterpreted and used for the person's own personal goals. Punishing the innocent to teach is quite biblical too. for example, God sends brutal plagues which tortures a whole country, Egypt, to teach one guy, the Pharaoh, a lesson. The Pharaoh could've learned the lesson sooner, if not for god hardening his heart. Much like Jigsaw throwing people into these situations, it isn't conducive to teaching any lesson due to their horrific nature. "I was tortured and all I got was this lousy T-shirt," is pretty much the theme for the victims in both cases.
Also, it's wrong to make a strictly christian connection, because these attributes exist in other religions as well, and to me he represents a mix of them. The only thing that can be said, is that Jigsaw mimics a vengeful, wrathful god, and even jealous dulling out punishment with very little care about the outcome after the fact. It's left up to the victims to _decide_ for themselves if they're reborn, recruited, or tortured. The reborn could relate to Kali; they must be broken down and destroyed to be created as new. The recruited relates to cults of all kinds, but mostly Manson family type followers, that learned a new world view with distain for humanity. And, the tortured are like Prometheus chained to a mountain cursed with life to suffer forever.

Philosophy of Saw summed up in one word: Healthcare.
How?
Erdood All they care about is money, not terminals like John?
Erwood John had cancer but they wouldn’t treat him because he couldn’t afford it.
John's tumor was inoperable due to being highly risky to remove , Jill's miscarriage was caused by a mixed of an accident due to a junkie(someone who is someone abuses health care) .
Diablito el Demonio. No.
Only a few would have actually helped the survivor:
Reverse bear trap
Barbed wire cage
Leg saw multi-trap
Essentially, only the first movie's victims would have been helped (if they all survived).
All sequels set other in traps and their lives are in the hands of the main character. That's why no go would or could ever come out of majority of traps.
Also, it's better if the victim doesn't see the person that put them there. Seeing that person triggers immediate aggression. (Cecil is a prime example)
Only 1 of those people in the traps you mentioned survives through all the movies and that's the one that cut his foot off in the leg saw you mentioned, hell he even ends one of the characters himself
Yea the first 4 were The best
You sound mgtow
Mwhat your saying is females have little motivation to become moral because they are privileged to reject males their entire lives so only get forced to reflect once males no longer pursue them

Well considering that all of Jigsaw’s victims either:
A. Die
B. Need therapy (Saw:3D)
C. Go crazy (I.e. Amanda and Dr. Gordon)
I think it’s safe to say Jigsaw’s work hasn’t helped anyone.
Adam wasn't tempted by the Apple, Eve was tempted by what the serpent said about the Apple and then misled Adam by telling him to eat the Apple too.
Alex Meggoe btw the “apple” was good ol sex
@@ludexgundyr186
The Apple is the knowledge of the difference between good and evil. It's literally called "the fruit of Knowledge." Adam and Eve were together under God (a.k.a. married) and could've had all the sex they wanted.
"God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil."
Genesis 3:5
Adam chose his Wife over God, and not much has changed.
He was tempted. It's not like he didn't know it was forbidden. He could have easily said no.
@@timothywilliamson3152, why would you choose God over a woman if you're straight?
I have a lot of issues with the Saw franchise, one of being that Jigsaw simply paid lip service to the idea of redemption. So many of his traps involved at least one party dying, with it sometimes being in the hands of another person he believed needed to be 'redeemed', which ruins someone else's 'redemption'. Especially when they have to actively kill another person!
'You want to live and see your mistakes, well someone has to die in the process because I think this is a great group activity!'
That moment when you realize that "Wisecrack" is just another word for "Smartass".
Actually to wisecrack is to make a smartass joke. close though
I was expecting a saw movie not the bloody Spanish inquisition!
cgarrand08 nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition
our chief weapon is surprise
nice.
The first SAW movie made a great psychological horror film but then the rest that followed up just turned into straight torture porn.
I'd say that only truly happened after they killed Jigsaw in the 3rd movie.
The fan edit of Saw "The Jigsaw Files" where it is all the Jigsaw scenes in chronological order gave me a whole new appreciation for the series. Really well done. May even be better than the movies themselves. Wish a better resolution copy of it existed. But I highly recommend watching it.
The Spruce Campbells where can I get this?
In school we once had movies as theme for english class.
When the teacher asked us what kinds of film genres we knew,
I raised my hand and answered Torture-Porn, because I thought of Saw.
With a *WTF* expression on her face, she looked at me and said:
I'm sure there are lots of different porn genres, but that doesn't belong in my lesson.
seyithan ars that teacher? Albert Einstein.
It makes me so mad how jigsaw put that guy who’s son died in a trap because he was obsessed with revenge even though jigsaw got revenge on Cecil, the guy that killed his son
Zoe Goodall that was justice not revenge.
Sir Edgelord_101 it was revenge, cause who is jigsaw to take another life? That's the whole point of why jigsaw and his ideology was a failure. Who was he and his disciples to commit these crimes? Who are they to say they see the light when they bath in darkness.
Ozzie Edwards exactly
Ozzie Edwards He's an hypocrite. He said it was so he could become a better person but he really just wanted revenge. People like that come up with ways to justify themselves and this whole shitty belief of "redemption through pain" is his. He even refuses to acept he killed anyone just because they had the chance not to die.
Zoe Goodall well to be fair Jeff’s game wasn’t really that difficult. He never really got hurt himself. He had to save other people from jigsaws game
Big fan of the SAW franchise and this philosophical evaluation is fascinating! Great video :)
It’s philosophy: New movie every year no matter how stupid it gets.
Spencer Whiteway The first 2 movies were actually well done
Personally I can't blame the original creators for taking the money and running with it x33
Seems like they made the movie they wanted to with the first and then got paid ass loads to just make any contrived nonsense to justify the torture porn that people keep coming and paying for.
PhyreI3ird im pretty sure the original screenwriters and people like that left after 3, which is where they wanted to end the franchise-with Johns death. But people wanted more films, so they brought in a mostly new crew to make more films
Katelyn Steffens not true, directors of saw 4-7 had previously worked on the series
Leo B I misread the thing I read that said that the other people left. However, I do know that Leigh whannel originally planned for saw 3 to be the end of the franchise and it was the last one he wrote before going to being a producer for the films.
Suffering and torture are methods which cults use to indoctrinate victims, and most churches and cult leaders use very similar methods to maintain and grow followers. People do this to in relationships.
Most churches use suffering and torture? What churches are you going to?

Philosophy of Gerald's Game or Hidden Meaning in Gerald's Game
I have a question for Saw II fans (or simply those who appreciate it): do you think that all of the victims in the house trap could have theoretically survived? I'm far from being certain about it, but I would like it to be the case, because that would make Saw II a much better movie. What is problematic with this theory is that we only know that there are 5 syringes (that could protect from the mortal gaz) in the house I think, and there are 8 people in total...Sure, Amanda was certainly already protected from the gaz, as well as the detective's son (or?). But that still makes one person who could not have possibly been protected from the toxic gaz. Am I right? I would appreciate if you could help.
There was syringe for everyone. There were 8 players
Daniel
Amanda
Xavier
Obi
Jonas
The prostitute
The fat guy
The other girl
The syringes were around the house but since the fat guy died too early, his syringe was never seen. 1
The room had another one inside a box. 2
The one in the blade box. 3
Obi’s trap had 2. 5
Xavier’s trap. 6
We can assume the other 2 were never seen since the owners of those were dead before getting to see them.
Sorry for the late response
@@alt-rightbronie4512 *fat guy*
LMAO
I do think so. We don’t see all the tests though.
However before I go into the main thing, there is one flaw in that whole trap in my opinion, and that is the inclusion of Laura (The blonde girl). She doesn’t seem like someone who should be there. She’s young, seemingly law abiding and easily frightened.
So, here’s how all 8 of them could’ve survived:
-No one looks or stands in front of the peephole while they’re turning the key, or better yet, they don’t use the key at all like the note said.
-They analyze the rainbow clue, figure out the answer and get the first antidote from the safe. 1 is saved (Likely Daniel considering how he’s just a kid), 7 more to go.
-Obi turns the valve to shut off the fire. 2 people are safe (Obi and someone of his choosing, I’m putting my money on Laura), 5 more to go.
-Xavier jumps in the needle pit and gets the key. The door is opened and he gets the antidote. Xavier is saved, 4 more to go.
-Gus (The guy who was killed first) finds his test (The razor box). He notices that it’s already unlocked, and get the antidote. Gus is safe, 3 more to go.
-Addison finds her test (A waffle iron which she needs to press her face into to get the antidote) just bites her teeth and ”sacrifices her looks to save her life.” 1 more is saved, 2 more to go.
-Jonas finds his test, whatever that might be, and solves it. He’s safe, and there is only Amanda left.
-Amanda was likely safe from the gas all along, but in this event she probably had some sort of secret backup needle which she could just ”find” or pass an easy ”test” in order to get it just to avoid suspicion.
So that was the minimum amount of antidotes, but I’m gonna say there was at least 1 more. Which is in Laura’s test. Daniel probably had a test as well, so that makes the amount of antidotes inside the house, a solid 10. Just in case a few are lost.
The problem with Jigsaw's logic is the same problem that keeps people from changing their habits:
*They don't want to go through the trouble.*
Only when the person really wants the change and is willing to struggle for it, only then the treatment/diet/training actually works.
I really love these philosophy vids!!!!
Suffering will always exist due to it being a perspective thing, it's constantly changing and it is different for everyone.

Please do a philosophy of the emoji movie... It really has a profound message about the stupidity of humanity and how desperate one can get for money...
Saw X definitely gives more the revenge vibe than renewal. Even though its set between Saw I and II, it seems like the writers forgot about this.
I think the flaw in Jigsaw's plan is the fact that it's easier to transform bad circumstances that have no third hand involved into personal growth. The trauma that this people suffer in the villain's hands it's prone to produce fear or anger instead of reflection. You still have somebody to blame things on, to seek revenge after, etc. But if you survive something like an accident, it depends on your own strenght to make it out and the most after it. There's pride, faith, and a whole lote of other positive things to look at.

LordTails66 i meant skewed in the sense of having his victims learn a lesson. However twisted it is that was his intention. His underlings are killing for revenge and just to cause harm. That's not his intention. That's why I said its skewed.
River no one said it had to be perfect... his underlings took his philosophy the wrong way and kill just to kill, not to teach them a lesson. Hence why I said HIS PHILOSOPHY got skewed...smh
+Javon Dallas: They took something bad and made it worse, honestly.
Heads up to anyone that might want to play the video games....
They're not good. Don't play them.
yeah.......they def are
I thought the first one was cool, not amazing, but ok.
I literally went through all three stages mentioned in the video.
No wonder Saw resonates so well despite being pretty silly films, they get the meta-story right.
Honestly this is like Death Note, Light ends up doing terrible things because he thinks it's justice, and killing people because they've done bad things is the right thing apparently.
"Watching Saw movies qualifies as attending church" lmaooo I'm done 😂💀💀
You should make a philosophy of Jake Paul 😂
Interesting analysis. Well done.
I was literally just thinking I'd love to see something on the Saw movies from you guys, although I was expecting a What Went Wrong, tbh! I'd still love to see a deep dive into 3 and 4, in particular, since I think those are the deepest philosophically.
on stage is all blood and gore but behind the scenes theres knowledge and philosophy
Funny how this channel is happy to show clips of people being mutilated but bleeps out all the curse words.
I am ranking the films and this helped so much
You forgot to mention that he is testing the people’s will to live. That’s a pretty big part of it imo.
The philosophy of slacker plz
I just watched 2 other videos that referenced the emoji movie.... illuminati confirmed.

"But only through suffering will we achieve grace." - Aunt Lydia before handcuffing a girl to a flaming stovetop
I love the Saw series :D

That One Guy AND BERSERK DUDES!

yesss
Yes! It hits you over the head pretty bluntly with its central themes but it would still be a really interesting subject
Yaaaaad
I just watched a compilation of SAW deaths and now this video pops up in my sub-feed.
Spooky.
Happy scary month everybody!
GunpowderCoffee lol watches Saw content then gets spoiled by getting recommend more Saw content. CZcams algorithms bro. But Happy October.
Well i meant the subscription feed. I should probably edit my main comment for clarity.
Best video on the internet!!
I think one of the major flaws of the philosophy of Saw is that those he traps make choices. While they may technically be able to choose whether to live or die, the weight of the options is by no means even. Any of us can technically choose to commit suicide at any time, but we don't.
Perhaps what I am trying to move towards is an argument I heard put this way: Does a person on a ship really have a choice if they are told they must either obey or be thrown into the ocean with no chance of rescue? This is the difference between what Saw does and what marathon runners do. Saw is forcing an illusion of choice and heaping on tremendous amounts of innocent suffering. A marathon runner, on the other hand, is actually making their choice to do what they do for a far more intrinsic purpose, and the suffering they endure is inherent to the activity and their growth.
