What I love is that both Schaefer’s were so intertwined with a narrative portion of your life’s journey. No mère consumer purchase or utilitarian exchanges. Instead, products from another time woven into the meta narrative of your time, both then and now. Bravo!
Oh that’s a lovely Schaefer’s you found as the replacement! I had one just like that with the green ebonite tortoiseshell look I found in a Toronto pawn shop in the 1980s! The pen was from ca 1928 or so I think, made in Canada, and worked great for me for about 5 years until I too dropped it in my final year of a Masters program in University and the nib was damaged. It was impractical to repair so I never did; that pen just had to be retired and eventually replaced for active writing duty. Loved that pen. It was my first of a lifetime of fountain pens since that time. You seem to add a unique peaceful and charming loveliness to everything you do here on your channel. Thanks for sharing your own Schaefer’s fountain pen experience with us!
Sounds like that was a wonderful pen and served you well for years. Always sad to have to retire them, but it’s a special journey to experience nonetheless. Thank you so much!
Thank *you* for uploading Alicia. I am nearing a new chapter in my own life-that I don’t really even know the title of yet and perhaps I never will. To memories made and to memories in the making. Sincerely, H.
This was a lovely video. I wish you and your pen the best along your life's journey. I hope you have much happiness. You can't change the past but you are the captain of your future. Life is short so do what brings you joy. Never let any one abuse you. Stay sweet stay strong.
You transported me to a literary journey… the total language expression of a feeling, an emotion, a breathe of fresh air, a magical sensation of entity, a step to discovery, a deep connection to what its loved, the absolute meaning of existence… The profound gratitude to life. Thanks for always being an inspiration! Congratulations on this new beginning!
Absolutely love how those old 14k nibs write, I have a few and my favorite broke the same way. But I have been blessed with my repair has lasted 3-4 years now. Love the video! Cheers
Each pen develops a personality over time. In a way, they are like dogs, cats and yes, I suppose, ferrets; their personalities are determined by the relationships that shape them. I've known people that bought a dog for no other reason than it looked exactly like one they miss so deeply only to be disappointed that the personality is quite different. I've also learned that no pet, even a perfectly identical clone, develops the same personality - partly because we are not quite the same person today as we were back then and our shared experiences from this point forward will always be different from those that were. It is good to remember that a new pen cannot be a "replacement" for one that is forever lost. It will be different, but then so are we, and thus begins a whole new relationship. Enjoy! .
I don't know why I smile every time I see you pull out your typewriter. It might be memories of old typewriters I've seen and used such as my grandmothers that, I think, looks a lot like this one. Or, it might be a precision instrument loved and cherished by someone.
Dear Alica, These thoughts about life, timing and the way objects we are fond of act as memorabilia... touched me so deeply that I cannot say anything but thank you. Thank you for putting into words what I have been experiencing this last year - entering a new stage in life demands resilience and clairvoyance, without forgetting all of the past but knowing how to bounce back (or should I say, bounce forward) and most importantly, letting life and flow guide us with the right timing. Wholeheartedly, Sarah 💌
Hey i just really wanna say thank you for calming me down. Its my first day back to school tomorrow and i just binged like half of your videos and they are just so comforting so thank you so much
It doesn’t matter what your subject is…pens, typewriters, trips or pets. There always seems to be a life lesson, an inspiration in your words. I so enjoy your words, your music, even the sound of your voice. Thank you for giving me this to look forward to.
While you were talking of your broken Sheaffer, of your search for a replacement, of your consciousness you cannot really replace her, it came to my mind Tennyson's "Tears, idle tears". But what is lost is lost for one time and one place only, so: "Not fare well, / But fare forward, voyager".
Somethings in life are irreplaceable.. You can not do a first again and it be a first again...sometimes the second time can better than the first. Enjoy your memories that are created by your second and grow with them along the way!! As always Stay Safe & Healthy & Happy !! 😊♥️🌺!! Enjoy!!
Dear AMS, before watching this post I was unaware of the beauty of the Sheaffer Balance, and afterwards gradually decided to buy one. However, they are rather scarce in Australia, so I bought a Wing Sung 626 copy in gorgeous blue celluloid. At 140 x 12.8mm it's a tiny bit smaller than your Oversize, but performs quite well. One day an original will turn up; till then I'll keep watching your show. Thanks, and Merry Christmas from Oz.
I felt the bittersweet sadness in your voice. This resonates with me with new beginnings. Sometimes new beginnings can come daily. Thank you for sharing with us. ❤️
New beginnings are always awaiting us. Yes life does take some strange directions at times but the important thing is that we stay on the journey. Sometimes things and people that we thought we knew every thing about are strangers to us and equally things we had forgotten about or perhaps grown out of can come back with renewed importance to us. Items and people come and go and we are forever starting anew if we want to be contented travelers. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us and stay on the journey of life which is an interesting one!
I am loving this new format, Alicia. 💛Congratulations on finding more inspiration with your lovely pen! Cheers to all that’s yet to come in this new season.
Wow. What a lovely video tribute to two awesome fountain pens. Your video was a poetic explanation for how deeply personal the writing experience can be and how a simple thing like a pen can be embued with so much meaning. Thank you for one of the best fountain pen videos I've seen this year. And congratulations on your new beginning with a lovely new/vintage fountain pen.
It was one of the most poignant and touching pen videos that I ever watched! I have a Sheaffer's Balance (oversized, CIRCA 1935) as well, but your video will make me look at that pen very differently now. I think the sense of loss, and the efforts to regain what we have lost can often be a very debilitating and emotional one. My respects and admiration to you for your very humane thoughts, and also your powerful thought process (which is wise enough not to discount human weaknesses and vulnerabilities).
Loved the green oversized pen 🖊️. My fave color. My first fountain pen was a parker, wish I still had it with all the new array of inks that are available. Thanks
John Mayer, in addition to his typewriter hobby and his little musical hobby, is a pretty famous watch collector. He said one time that he routinely cleans up dog poop while wearing a Breitling. The point is, these things are made to be used. What good is keeping stuff in glass cases or locked in a vault? My pens go everywhere I go. My watches go everywhere I go. Sorry to hear about your Sheaffer. But sometimes these things happen. Thanks for your video.
I'm pretty sure that pen is not made from ebonite, but from black celluloid. Most (perhaps all) Sheaffer Balance pens from that era were made of celluloid, which Sheaffer called "Radite." It looks like it snapped where there is a groove that a holds a spring ring that holds the lever in place. I do know someone in Italy who can fuse the celluloid back together. It's done using celluloid, so the repair is more structurally sound rather than using glue. I've had some pens repaired by him in this way, and you can't tell where the damage was, and I have had no rebreaks. There's a number of people in Europe who do these types of celluloid repairs, but I don't know of anyone stateside who does them this way
So happy to see you and your new Balance making memories. I followed your original Balance's story and am curious if you considered swapping just the body? I would think that would not impact nib response or ink flow. Funny thing, my first vintage pen came from Sarnoff just days before I found your channel. It's a Sheaffer flat top white dot in black and pearl. That started my journey down the vintage rabbit hole... Anyhow, hope you have a wonderful rest of your week and stay warm over the next couple days as that mini chill pushes through the desert.
Wow!!! I can’t believe you got your first at Sarnoff too! That’s amazing. Such a small world. I miss having them around so much. Such a bummer they closed. I’m totally ready for another cold spell. It’s got to remain winter for a little while longer, please!!
That Schaeffer looks amazing. I love these 1930s Parkers and Shaeffers that you profile in these videos. It’s a shame that these once great brands have ceded their dominance to Japanese and German companies. I live in fear of dropping some of my more premium fountain pens. That’s why I tend to carry around TWSBIs, Safaris and Metropolitans (I also love affordable fountain pens as much as expensive ones).
Just a thought - perhaps rather than finding a whole authentic replacement for your broken pen - search for parts, the barrel and fill mechanism sans a nib? I bet there are more broken pens, same model...
Hows your feel about sheaffer pen? Plan to buy another sheaffer fountain pen? Have you tried sheaffer leagacy fountain pen? Please advise your opinion about this model?
Sheaffer is one of my favorite pen companies. I will buy another vintage Sheaffer in the future. I’ve never tried the Leagacy, not really interested in the new pens they produce
Might I make a suggestion? Seek out a custom pen maker and have them make you something special to hold the first oversized Sheaffer Balance’s nib. That way you can still enjoy its continuance of memory as well, since all nibs are different. Perhaps a nice blood red acrylic or celluloid to go with the favorite ink you preferred to use with this nib.
I wish I knew where did you get this beautiful pen, I gasped when I saw it and I wished something so special like that for myself, my girlfriend had the same reaction, we fell in love with this beauty. Please, I beg, share your source of such treasure
@@adventuredenali thanks, I purchased once from them, because of your recommendation. I think I might look at one of these... it is just too beautiful.
It's a shame the replacement Sheaffer wasn't black as well as the original; you could have swapped out the cap and retained the engraved cap ring. You can still do it if the mis-match doesn't bother you.
What I love is that both Schaefer’s were so intertwined with a narrative portion of your life’s journey. No mère consumer purchase or utilitarian exchanges. Instead, products from another time woven into the meta narrative of your time, both then and now. Bravo!
The second Scheaffer Oversized is even more beautiful than the first. That's a good omen right there.
My thoughts exactly!

What a gorgeous new pen. Two things: 1. Enjoy it. 2. Don't drop it.
Bahahah! Wise words!
I didn't catch on to what you were doing until the oxblood. Love the parallels . Blessings to you on this chapter of your journey. Bravo
Thank *you* for uploading Alicia.

Ooh that’s so exciting!!
Thanks for sharing. I found myself getting emotional and I can’t explain why.
I actually had a sheaffer balance smaller pen for the 1930's....but I solf it as it was too fragile for me it seems....great video 😍

Hello Dag! Thank you. I’m so glad it resonated with you. ❤️
Bought my first fauntain pen today! It's must arrives in 10 days 👀
Your narrative through this sounds like a 1950s murder mystery!! Oh man that would be fun to film!
Oooh! That does sound fun!
Now you just need to find a doctor with thick carpets.
Hahah brilliant
Handwriting of this CZcams blogger is very good 👍
love the green

I’m considering a new pen. A Parker Duofold lady Parker orange and a Schaefer crest snorkel. I like both. I’d be interested in your thoughts. Thsnks
Thank you for this. It's a poem
Thank you and you’re welcome!

Can you please tell me, is your new pen called Sheaffer Balance Lifetime Junior? what is the pen size?
Alicia, how does the writing experience with the new fountain pen compare with your first Shaeffer?
I honestly can’t remember, it’s been so long since I’ve been able to use it. But I know that this one is greatly enjoyed.
Yes.
