My thoughts on the argument/discussion between having the DCT or Manual Goldwing model. Let me know what your thoughts are. Is it worth it or does it not matter?
Thank you for keeping it real! It really does just come down to preference. It can be too easy to get caught up in thinking one way or the other. Especially the whole “dct doesn’t make you a “real” motorcyclist” thing. It’s what you enjoy!!
After 30 years riding manual shift bikes I didn't think I'd like the DCT until I rode one. Now that I have a DCT bike I love it. But I agree with motorider -- it's just personal preference. Motorcycles are about having fun so pick the bike that is the most fun for you and enjoy yourself :).
Thanks for the video. For me, had to have 'Walking Mode' (forward and reverse) for a bike this size. I can walk it around standing on the side of it, but the convenience transmission based forward and reverse is just what I wanted.

I have a 2019 manual tour. Received it in November of 2019 just as winter was hitting. Awesome bike! I was only able to put 7,000 miles on her due to COVID restrictions but plan on many more years on miles.
That’s awesome! I’m just about at 7000 myself..takes me a bit longer bc I normally only get to ride on weekends. We did take a short trip in October to Lake George NY and it performed great. Looking forward to many more miles and trips as well! Ride safe! 👍🏻👍🏻
I’ve owned both. Currently have a manual transmission on a goldwing. Trust me once you try the DCT you’ll miss it when you don’t have it. I prefer DCT especially in the city.
I could certainly see the DCT having an advantage in city traffic! 👍🏻
@@motorider4130 I’ve had a DCT Honda and enjoyed it but I have bought a manual GW. Both have pro’s and con’s but I am with you MotoRider41.
I think I would prefer to manual shift still. That is one of the fun parts of riding.

Yea except after youve shifted for the 1,000+ time, you get over the fun of it really quick.
I just bought a 2018 GW with the DCT. I thought I'd miss shifting until I rode the DCT. It really makes a difference. It makes the bike easier to ride in town.
My bike is 12 years old. The concern for me is the additional maintenance on dct and more so what will it cost to keep dct on the road long term?
I'm talking strictly about the tranny.
Love the DCT. Had ankle surgery 10 years ago and the arthritis that moved in limits my movement to the point I would miss some shifts. The only thing I miss is the friction point that the clutch gives you for u-turns
My only "complaint" with DCT is that I want to feel "involved". I don't care what someone else is riding though, as long as they're riding. The "not a real motorcycle" argument is older than I am, and that's saying something, since I'll be 61 this month. My CB 750 custom was a moped, to ask my Harley riding brothers, until I beat one of them in a light to light race, then it was a "quick moped"... Can't win... I've heard "It's a car" more than a few times where my wings were concerned, so it's a bit odd that wing riders would play into the stereotype, but meh.
I love the dct. It gives you the best of both worlds. The dct transmission shifts at the perfect time, and if you want to shift up and down, you can do the shifting manually too.

I was wondering if there is a gas mileage difference between the standard and DCT. Is it possible you guys could do a comparison on one of your rides. Definitely which one anyone buys will come down to personal preference. I rode the dot and was impressive at its ability to learn how I ride.
A employee at the demo told me the computer will study your riding and throttle habits and adjust shifting.
Yeah that’s what my friend who has the DCT said..it learns as you ride it which is pretty impressive.
But will it tell your wife how you have been riding when you get home?🤣

Did you ever consider the DCT? I'm leaning toward the bike you have because I like to be 'engaged' with the bike but perhaps I need to test drive a DCT to make an accurate comparison.
@@lorenerickson6578 Yes I did consider the DCT and I test drove it as well but as you said I’d like to be more engaged with the motorcycle and sometimes it doesn’t feel like a motorcycle when you just turn the throttle my interactions have not led me to need that type of motorcycle at this point in my life so I still enjoy changing gears. I love the manual and always have it’s what makes it a motorcycle to me not changing gears I need to be in a car

3,000 miles in and no regrets with my manual.
I had a transitional period getting used to the new sound and the angle of the clutch lever.
It was to the point I wondered if I should just of bought the dct.
That was the first couple hundred miles.
Now that I have all but forgotten my 09, no regrets.
Well, then there is the seat.
Still waiting to hear about the best replacement out there. Not happy to know my butt (and my wifes) gets sore going long haul.
Glad to know someone else has a manual Goldwing lol. Currently have over 13k and loving every mile. I upgraded my seat to a Wingsoft but still considering either Ultimate or Mustang for next season. The stock seat is horrible..I do use my airhawk if I am doing a lot of highway miles though. Still not perfect yet.
Been riding for over 35 years. i own a 2012 Victory Cross Country with cams, Vance and Hines pipes and will be getting the 2022 DCT. I want a big moped and don't think just enjoy the smooth quiet ride. Traffic jams are killer with a clutch. I can hop on the CC if I get that itch.
Yeah the DCT is really nice. My next one will most likely be DCT if it ever comes to that 😂. I test rode the Rebel 1100 with DCT and that pretty nice..shifted smoothly and was responsive.
I love the new Wing. Both transmissions are excellent and the suspension is amazing
It’s a really amazing machine..I never actually rode on one until I bought one 😂. Everyone one sho has the DCT says they love that as well. I was going to try and test ride one last year up in NY at Americade but Honda was booked solid for demo rides.
Nice video. In my opinion it does matter. A DCT is far more comfortable to ride in traffic and because it changes gear asynchronously (lower gear comes out while at the same time higher gear goes in ) it can beat the manual in a drag. I am also getting tennis elbow with my clutch being so hard to pull in, looking to get it adjusted now. Anyway, its what you are happy with in the end and I am still happy with my manual but I actually would swap for a DCT given the opportunity.
I say it's kinda like a drag race Ive seen between two Dodge Challenger hellcats, one manual, one auto, the auto beat the manual everytime, a human will never be able to shift as fast as a computer.
my issue is, i for the life of me can’t let off the clutch right when i accelerate and i stall out the damn bike every time, i also wouldn’t want to put my life on the line of having to take off quick from a dangerous situation and then panic and screw the clutch release, i have a dirt bike and once i’m very comfortable with it i’ll get a bike with a clutch
Test drove both transmissions and liked each .. little worried about losing the Reverse but the bike I’m trading in is 100 pounds heavier than the GW so I think I’ll be safe. Price is just too good on the manual holdovers
Glad you got to test drive both..I ended up just jumping right on the manual version with no test riding just sitting on it for about 10 minutes thinking about it 😂. If you get the tour version I think it has reverse..the non-tour doesn’t. It’s not too difficult to move around as long as you’re aware of how you’re parking etc. The weight just disappears when riding!
Personal preference… I’ve done both and it doesn’t matter
I’ve test ridden both manual and DCT and loved them both .. question though.. Do you ever miss the slow speed Forward & Reverse that you only get in the DCT? If you don’t need it, I’ll probably opt for the manual
I can’t really say if I would miss the forward and reverse having never ridden a wing with it..however I could see where it would be nice to have reverse in certain situations. Most likely with a passenger I think. I have a feeling I’ll be opting for the DCT next time around 😂
@@motorider4130 My current bike (Victory Vision) is 900 pounds and not having Reverse has been an issue many times .. have to really watch where I park .. the base model Wing (no trunk) that I'd probably get is quite a bit lighter than my Vision, so I think I could live without Reverse (and I ride alone 90% of the time) ..

Have to admit there's nothing like pulling the clutch and shifting gears on a bike but I would have to think the extra gear on the DCT should give better mileage on the long trips? Has to also be a little better if you're in stop and go traffic? What's your buddy say that owns both?
I would have to agree about the DCT easier in traffic..my only concern is when you’re constantly stopping is can you put it in neutral like you can when you have a manual? How does that work? No revving the throttle at lights 😂. My buddy has the DCT and loves it..certainly makes getting up to speed easier I suppose. Guess when the time comes I’ll be testing one out!

@@jimeronimo Gears 4, 5 and 6 on the manual are the same as 5, 6 and 7 on the DCT. It’s the lower gears 1,2,3 and 4 on the DTC that are slightly shorter not that you will notice. Cruising gas mileage should be about the same. Probably.
your version doesn't have the reverse, correct? if not, how hard is it to back it up without the reverse?
Yes that is correct..it’s not too difficult to back up like I have been doing on my other rides. Still just have to be aware of where you park etc..hills, slight inclines and the like.
The manual doesn't have reverse? Why,the previous manual model did?
The manual I have is the base model non-tour. The tour models all have reverse I believe. I suppose the base non-tour does not have it bc they thought since it was less weight why have reverse.
I wish I didn't like the DCT so I would have had more of a selection of bikes to choose from...I've read the DCT outsells the manual 8 to 1....I believe it...
It sure seems that way! All the riders I know of who have the new wing have DCT. I haven’t had the chance to try one out but I can see myself moving to that possibly.
Can you get any bett fuel economy with the manual transmission? With the low-rpm torque people claim with the nc750, you could be in a higher gear at lower speeds (especially going downhill, or perhaps if coasting to a stop), whereas an auto transmission may downshift when you’d prefer it not to.
I’m just making assumptions, as I haven ridden in 9 years, let alone ridden an nc750.
On backroads and highway riding I usually get any where from 48-50 mpg. On highways I use cruise as much as possible..it seems to help quite a bit. When coming to a stop always downshifting for engine braking with brakes. When cruising backroads I try to keep it between 4-5th depending on the road..6th when cruising along at around 50. The low end torque is great for not shifting too much.
@@motorider4130 Ok thanks. I’ve read some comments that claimed they got over 80 mpg, but I’m wondering if they confused their units of measurement.

I test drove them both and definitely Manuel is the way to go, the only way I would do DCT if I had extreme arthritis in my left hand. And the shift paddles only allow you to go one gear at a time correct? That's different than what you can do with a manual. I like to rev the throttle way too much to have a DCT! That's half the fun to make noise LOL, plus I love pulling in the clutch and gliding two stops, Impossible on the DCT, good discussion
Agreed! Revving and shifting are way too much fun for me! Yes I believe you can use the paddles on the left for shifting on the DCT..but then you may as well have a manual. I could see the DCT better off in traffic but I try to ride where there is none. 👍🏻👍🏻
You can manually drop as many gears as you like. The computer will never allow you to drop to a gear that would cause the engine to over rev. You can manually upshift as many gears as you like but here again, the computer will only allow you the gear that falls within the acceptable rpm range. If you upshifted to too high a gear for the speed you were traveling, the transmission will automatically select the proper gear. All the above can done in “D” mode. Little different story when in the “M” or manual mode.

if you you can shift better & smoother than the dct (specially with a pillion without you guys bumping heads during acceleration, braking & shifting), then i get it. otherwise, it’s just an ego thing.
people say they like to be in control & feels disconnected without a clutch.. it’s the throttle & brakes that’s gives you that sensation, not the clutch. other than the friction zone, there’s nothing more to the clutch. throttle & braking however has more things too factor in. if you think “fun” is in the clutch, you must’ve always been stuck in traffic lol.
I tested rode both the manual and dct last week. I preferred the manual but found the clutch only worked on the very last bit. I had to let it virtually all the way out before it engaged. How’s the clutch on your bike?
WonnovMenny hey! Glad you were able to test ride both..I had not done any of that prior to purchase so I really had no clue how the bike would be. Personally I have not noticed anything unusual regarding the clutch action but now that you mention it I will have to see where it catches. I don’t think mine is all the way out before engaging but I could be wrong..feels comfortable to me so far. Except mb in heavy traffic lol. I will say that the throttle in Sport mode is insanely twitchy..I mean wow that thing can move when you want it to! 👍🏻
Not many people know that I bought the 2017 Goldwing. That cost a bit more than my Toyota Camry but it's more fun and have more power.
I was debating between the newer model and previous generation when looking at the Goldwing. I like the color combos of the 2012-2017 models but I guess I really wanted a ride that was not pre-owned. I’m happy with my choice and have enjoyed every mile on it…not there is anything wrong with buying a used wing. They last forever!
@@motorider4130 The only good thing about getting pre-owned is saving on the depreciation upon selling off. I've been saving up for 2 years and I could afford to get the previous generation. I'm happy with that too because I have bigger trunk space but the weight, it's a lot! I'm lucky in a sense that I'm the 2nd owner and the previous owner put in 44,000km within that 4 years of ownership.
Add a subscriber for the new Goldwing and the NE scenery. I went with the Tour DCT but should have at least tested the 6MT as well. Maybe I should find a '20 6MT to ride - the new matte black and red trim looks pretty badass. Check out the GBeWinginIt channel too.

It says the top end is the same on the tyranny. That means dct needs extra gear to shift up smooth.
Guys are saying they could never shift that fast. Well if you had those short mid gears you would come closer.
I would like you to post your rpms at 55, 65, 75 and 85 mph in6th gear.
If your still cruising at 3100, 3200 rpm@75 mph with the same size engine then all it is, is smoother and the economy marginal from the gears plus the reduced weight of the bike.
Harley touted the 6 speed. I had first quarter issue bike( employee)just one more gear to shift, gas guzzler to the big time.
Appreciate the input. I know that at 70 mph the RPMs are at 2500 or so.. I’ll have to see what they are at the other speeds per your suggestion. I would think that it would around 3000 at 75.
Well I went and bought my own.
There's plenty to love but other than looks like a wing..
It's very different to me.
It's loud at any speed compared to my 09.
The seat is not as comply for both me and my wife.
And the worst is the clutch lever.
It's a reach and engages way out on the release.
I will get use to the bike. I'm at near 700 miles and it's going to take more than a full day of riding to really get to know the bike.
Another thing is the hard deceleration if you let up on the throttle. Again something to adapt to, you need to let off the throttle just enough to coast but let me say this once more, the bike will Jake brake in a heartbeat..

I'm wondering if they did the lever and tyranny this way to further promote dct.
As for 6th gear tour mode, two up with all we can carry averaging 85mph@ 3000 rpm. 90 mph at 3100.
Needs more fuel capacity.
The side bags don't hold much
compared to old bike.
Last of all the bike is loud for my liking.
I would buy a full exhaust for a whisper quiet bike.

@@LuisSanchez-lu4cu well I’m sorry to hear that you feel it’s too loud and the clutch seems far. You can adjust the reach of the clutch and brake levers to be closer. The seat def is not great. I upgraded to the wingsoft seat this year..much better but not perfect yet. Able to ride much further without discomfort so thats good. Not sure why you would want to spend extra cash on the exhaust. Personally I love the way it sounds and revs..seems pretty quiet to me. Hopefully you’ll grow to love it as much as I do.

You have a ton of torque almost from idle so you will be using 4 to 6 gear
True enough! Going through twisties I’ll keep it in 5th gear with very little shifting.
The automatic bike is easier and safer to ride just as the automatic car is easier and safer to drive!

Appreciate the input. I haven’t heard too many people complaining about the clunking noise. Some say you need to re-initialize the clutch and that helps the transmission. I hear the drive shaft working on my 6MT but not annoyingly it sounds normal for a shaft driven bike. But I’ve not ridden a DCT version so I suppose the sounds would be different.
