In this episode of Inside The Hive TV, Dr. Boncristiani chats with Dr. Olav Ruppell, Professor at the University of Albertam about his last publication on the feeding habits of Varroa mites, a major pest of honey bees. The study reveals surprising findings about the mites' diet, challenging previous claims and highlighting the complexity of their feeding behavior. Dr. Boncristiani discusses the research in detail, explaining how the mites primarily feed on the fat bodies of adult bees but adjust their diet to hemolymph when feeding on pupae. The video emphasizes the need for a comprehensive understanding of mite feeding behavior to develop effective control strategies. Join Dr. Boncristiani as he delves into the fascinating world of honey bee research and encourages viewers to keep an open mind to new scientific discoveries. Don't miss this insightful episode of Inside The Hive TV, the show that takes you into the world of bees.

I am in North Carolina, just south of UNC-Greenboro. We had the privilege of having Dr. Ruppell speak at our local county beekeeping association while he was there. We look forward to having Dr. Ruppell speak at the NC State Beekeepers Association Spring Conference next month.

Do drones have more fat bodies than workers or is it merely because they are under caps longer that mites prefer them?

Can the mites be separated by sex and the females radiated to sterilize them . Second does UV light affect and destroy the mites but not affect the bees. I use a piece of cooper sheet at the entrance to my hives by having the cooper ions tracked in by the bees. I have read the it mites do not like the ions and are repelled. Magnets at the N&S sides of the outside of the hive helps repel them also thru electro culture. any ideas.

One question i have is do the mites lay many times by reinfesting the brood or do the adults only lay once then die

    • @BeesNTrees47

they can lay eggs many times, not only once.

Really easy. Same process like with varroa. Cage the queen.. whayt for the brood to emerge and that other mite has no chance...
