My God I didn't know she did this song! This song was made for her; It's hers all the way.. Good God What a Commanding Voice. I just close my eyes and let it take me all the way to Heaven.
I fell in love with Yvonne Elliman's voice when she played Mary Magdeline in _Jesus Christ, Superstar._ Technically top-notch but has this element of emotion that is altogether serene yet a pain and anxiety that is palpable. It hit me in the feels when she sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him." Clapton always loved her voice and collaborated with her on a bevy of songs and albums. Not surprised; she's a rare talent. She ran into some trouble a few years ago and on one level I was a little disappointed because it seemed so out of character; but we all have our screw-ups at some point or another; I've had my share, so it's all a function of how and whether you pick yourself back up and dust yourself off and get back in the saddle. Sounds like she's done that, so it's all good. Still admire her talent.
Not much of a guitarist. Absolutely wonderful singer though. Heck of a nice solo from George Terry over there, too. Would’ve been nice of Eric to sit in on guitar on this one. Think he might’ve been familiar with it.
The Bee Gees brought me here. Yvonne was on their Chicago Soundstage concert and sang this. Epic. And! Sang To Love Somebody with The Brothers Gibb. So good!
Major major major goosebumps. Yvonne shines so bright in this slow, brooding, so soulful rendition and the band is amazing including the two very tasteful solos. Oh man, this is great stuff
Saw Yvonne in October 2014 performing Mary Magdalene in JCS (with Ted Neeley and Barry Dennen from the original cast). I met her after the show and told her how beautiful her version of this song is. She was really happy about that (I realized that most of the people know her for JCS and Saturday Night Fever only).
Saw this in 1977 at the Clapton concert in Mobile, Alabama. Yvonne was sitting on a stool and played this by herself. I've never forgotten how beautiful it sounded.
Hey Lisa - yes I saw the same performance as part that 1977 world tour(in Newcastle Upon Tyne UK) - it's also stayed with me for 40 years! Doesn't this video just bring it back! If you watch the full video it's pretty much his stage concert. All the best Paul aleph54 - sure the Old Grey Whistle Test was a very popular late night rock show on British TV in the 70's and 80's
Yvonne Elliman is such a great talent. To me, this is also one of Eric's best concerts, even though she was not in great shape with one thing and another. Stevie Windwood who wrote it was on good form when he wrote this great song. Love the way he get's her name wrong!
Beautiful .... Loved her from the original J.C. Superstar with Ian Gillan ....One of E.C's overlooked little gems from 461 Ocean Boulevard worth revisiting is LET IT GROW with Yvonne the source of it's inspiration
Live.... Music..... Wow.... Yvonne's voice.... Just Pops.... Flowy.... Touching... Saturday Night Music... Yvonne Elliman... Buddy Guy... James Bay... That would be a MAJOR JAM SESSION.....
so here i sit, taking chrome for a test spin, and i couldn't think of anything i wanted to see or hear more than Yvonne sing this tune. she has such a powerful voice in the range of this song, i find it most impressive and relaxing. Clapton outdid himself on the intro... truly good entertainment in a way we just cant find (easily) these days. thanks for the post.
Can't believe I managed to see this lineup full concert in the Gourmont Theatre in Southampton U.K. - Had to pay £3 for a ticket 😎 was stunning concert - same tour as EC was Here album.
So good. I remember the first time I heard her sing on the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack, which I still have, song book included. Looove this song, loved it when Winwood sang it, when Clapton sings it.. it's timeless.
Clapton has said that these years are a mystery to him. He doesn't even remember doing the Old Grey Whistle Test. Amazing he could still play so well though.
Proof that angels walk among us...
Who knew Yvonne had such incredible acoustic chops? This is an absolute gem!
Yes she can definitely play.
Anyone with ears 🍷😎👌
My God I didn't know she did this song! This song was made for her; It's hers all the way.. Good God What a Commanding Voice. I just close my eyes and let it take me all the way to Heaven.
Flawless!!! Yvonne Elliman is so underrated.
I always find myself back to this
Her voice is so beautiful. It brings me to tears.

Yvonne plays guitar and well too! I didn't know that.
Been covered by so many bands /singers and this rendition is in the top 5 for me.. True class solid delivery. Shines.
I'm guessing that many don't know there is a wealth of Yvonne Elliman material on You Tube. She's amazing!
I still remember seeing this on the OGWT when first broadcast, just as good now 45Y later

Any version of this song is a masterpiece.....
I was a kid in the 70’s and I heard this song in the dentist chair one day and I was hooked. Never heard this version though. She’s amazing!
Check her out in Jesus Christ superstar
Oh Lord, what a singer, what a song❤❤❤
Such a beautifully soaring voice! ❤
Yvonne was always brilliant at everything she did. LOVED her in Jesus Christ Superstar....
That is where I first saw her. Loved her style & passion straightaway.
Not much of a guitarist. Absolutely wonderful singer though. Heck of a nice solo from George Terry over there, too.
Would’ve been nice of Eric to sit in on guitar on this one. Think he might’ve been familiar with it.
I’ll chq that one too
May rest of her .

As individuals singing.
I remember seeing Jesus Christ Superstar in Portland Oregon---fell in love with Yvonne's voice. So rich and deep.
Didn't know she sang a version of this song, totally awesome, she even plays guitar too. So talented.
The most soulful rendition I have heard, Yvonne is simply the best at touching the heart. Beautiful
The Bee Gees brought me here. Yvonne was on their Chicago Soundstage concert and sang this. Epic. And! Sang To Love Somebody with The Brothers Gibb. So good!
Lovely voice guitarist and great harping too

She’s an amazing artist!
Truly magnificent..... didn't think anyone could sing this better than Stevie Winwood
She was in love with Eric back then. I will love this song forever and Yvonne. Still have her self titled album from '72. 🥰❤
Best version other.than Windwood's .One needs to be a soul singer to sing this song, and she nails it. Always loved her work in JC Superstar
she is a super star.
Who knew she’s amazing
hauntingly beautiful
Man the soul in that voice
KILLER harmonica playin'. The girls are jammin'.
Joe Schmoe Marcy Levy, awesome

Major major major goosebumps. Yvonne shines so bright in this slow, brooding, so soulful rendition and the band is amazing including the two very tasteful solos. Oh man, this is great stuff

Always loved when Yvonne would do this with Eric back then ... Nice Yvonne and nice guitar George Terry! Always loved this band!
She is so beautiful and god, wonderful voice.
She was Clapton's Muse in 1974-1975. Beautiful in every way.
Such a talent. And how much fun to be playing on tour with Clapton in the mid 70s.
Very cool indeed!
Absolutely amazing rendition ❤
Chilling yet so warm!
pure talent

OMG.... This is great! She is so talented and this shows it albeit 1977. This was all she was about back then. Beautifully done. Love Yvonne.
I've been in love with Yvonne since she played Mary... This is ethereal; I can die happy now...
Beautiful rendition. The standard, for me.
this is a beautiful version of this song, love it.
She had some serious acoustic playing chops.
Absolutely superb...I'm stunned.
I had no idea Yvonne played guitar. Harmonica on here was killer too.
Excellent Yvonne Elliman!!!
Saw this in 1977 at the Clapton concert in Mobile, Alabama. Yvonne was sitting on a stool and played this by herself. I've never forgotten how beautiful it sounded.
+Lisa Dunn That is a pretty amazing story. I thought the Old Grey Whistle Test was in England. Please correct me if I am wrong.

In my opinion this was Clapton's finest band as a solo artist.
iandmanful I agree, without a doubt. Never had this much passion since.
Who's the guitarist playing behind her here?
@@Degantown georges terry

Lady Yvvone Elliman, With Mister Eric Clapton
Wow, what a beautiful version of that song. Until now, only thought of her from SNF soundtrack. A very underrated artist !
And in Jesus Christ superstar of course
Clean & sober song. So beautiful.
+Glen Danielsen Clapton looked pretty drunk to me.
He sure did. Kind of ironic.
Clapton has said that these years are a mystery to him. He doesn't even remember doing the Old Grey Whistle Test. Amazing he could still play so well though.
Man I like this side of her much better , awesome performance
